Daily Proverb

from Proverbs 9

7 Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return.
Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt.
8 So don’t bother correcting mockers;
they will only hate you.
But correct the wise,
and they will love you.
9 Instruct the wise,
and they will be even wiser.
Teach the righteous,
and they will learn even more.

These verses are very apt in politics.

I think that’s in “The Message” version :)

But the principle is so true. I do a bit of mentoring (informally) of young professionals in my industry and it’s so refreshing that they’re willing to listen and learn from an old fart. On the other hand, I learn so much from these bright & thoughtful young men & women that I think I benefit more than they do.

I like “stupid is as stupid does”. Perfect for the Labour Party.

I sort of wonder whether we might be missing the point here – Mockers exist on this blog and every other blog left and right wing and centre and god knows the House of Parliament is full of them. Cam isnt seeming (to me) to make any judgement – he just says its apt for politics.

It used to be described by preachers i heard as a “teachable spirit” or words to that effect.

It almost seems to point out the difference between those who will dialogue and learn and those who will not (just my opinion anyway). Sort of like – which side of this equation are you – and which side would you like to be on.

Another similar ref is from Psalm 1 King James Bible
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. Remember – i’m not a Christian … and it comes down to what you define as the ungodly … or sinners – but in simplistic terms id sort of suggest it has parallels with applied commonsense – for use in furthering communication and human development. I often wonder whether thats what Christ meant when he is quoted as saying “… the kingdom of god is within you…” Hearts and Minds and all that good jazz.

Good truths in the proverbs thats for sure. They stand the test of time. But in the end its just my opinion offered for whatever its worth.

And i suppose – the simple truth that there is no point in trying to dialogue with a mocker – and i suppose also – seek appropriate company that is receptive to dialogue…

I’m hopeful that the mockers can be converted to being the wise … etc etc – move to the other side of the equation.

I wonder whether it is a commentary on our own inner state – whether we all have a bit of mocker and a bit of wise – which one wins today.
