National’s Strategic Stupidity, Ctd

Stuff is running a story of a leaked poll on Epsom showing National winning the seat and leaving ACT out of parliament. This election it does not matter as National will have enough votes to form a government, but in 2014 without ACT, Peter Dunne, Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples National will not have any coalition partners.

It is simply not possible to believe that John Key will be as popular in 2014 as he is now and that National can buck historical trends to get over 48% to continue governing alone.

This blog has been consistent in saying National is strategically stupid for not engaging in the referendum for the electoral system. John Key and Steven Joyce are almost certainly ensuring an election loss in 2014 by not engaging, and dooming National to becoming the Natural Party of Opposition in the future.

John Key needs to do what David Cameron did and explain why New Zealanders should Vote for Change and his preferred system to give National a chance of being in government in the medium term.

Agreed.  It defies belief as to why the Nats have completely ignored the electoral system referendum. Almost makes you wonder whether they’ve been “got at” by Labour from the inside.

Totally agree. So this is why there is not much discussion about the upcoming referendum – I was wondering. Well National are not being wise at all. The chance to vote in the referendum this election is very important to us voters – MMP is a dog and needs changing. Never do I want to see the “showerhead and lighbulb” years ever again. Now is the opportunity for us voters to ensure that minority parties stop wagging the MMP dog. This election National should be giving the message loud and clear they  need ACT. My Epsom friends (being National Party loyalists)  will only vote for John Banks if National gave the signal to do so. They like John Banks but not as much as they like the National Party. National Party – start engaging about the electoral system and have a big think about Epsom.

Even more ironic considering John Banks has more in common with the National party than the Act party. He should not even be in the Act party, why they got rid of RH I will never know.

Red Labour, Blue Labour, what’s the difference? The real choice this election is do people want real democracy? With the new Conservative policy of binding referendums  it won’t matter what voting system we have as the people will have the ultimate power, not the troughers

I agree Whale, but then your argument assumes either Joyce or Key WANT to be there past 2014. I don’t think they do…..

Unscientific research in Epsom (OK the dinner party set) is showing that nearly everyone I know who voted Hide/National in 2008 and for Banks as Super City Mayor last year, will NOT be voting for Banks next month.

Nearly as dumb as Lockie trying to ban the Herald from Parliament this week.
