Simon Bridges mans up

Yesterday on Q&A Simon Bridges argued for a change to the electoral system. This was in clear breach of National’s crazy internal policy of not talking about the referendum.

As readers of this blog knows National has been strategically stupid with this referendum. Under MMP it will run out of coalition partners, with ACT, United Future and the Maori Party all doomed. This will leave National with the herculean task of having to win 48% of the vote to become government after 2014. They have only won 48% once since the Second World War, so they are dreaming if they think they can do this, no matter how popular John Key is.

Simon Bridges has shown the way. The other goody two shoes MPs need to think about whether they want to be the natural party of opposition or if they want to be a senior minister in another National government in the future, and take a stand.

MPs should remember that while there are always threats of banishment from the top this never happens. Nikki Kaye took principled stands against National and she was rewarded with a 24 place rise on the party list and has been quietly told she is being fast tracked into cabinet.

National has too many gutless wonders in caucus who need to stand up and be counted like Simon Bridges and Nikki Kaye.
