Viewer numbers from last night

As I suspected stuff all people had lives so tragic that they stayed at home watching election opening addresses:

Last night, Labour, National and the Greens had their opportunity to put their message across to New Zealand voters. We’ve taken a look at the numbers to see how they performed.

Overall, in the 5+, the average audience was 256,240 viewers.  This ranged from approximately 284,000 viewers when the advertisements started with Labour and approximately 227,000 viewers when the Greens ran their ad.  National sat in the middle with approximately 255,000 viewers.

This is a complete waste of taxpayers money. These ads are all funded and paid for out of the parliamentary services rort that rewards incumbency. Effectively it is a state funded subsidy to media channels in election year to the tune of millions.

As you can see stuff watched. More people watched X-Factor and Masterchef, FFS.

Time to ditch this anachronism of the past and apply the funds to proper democracy funding and education programmes. A good example would have been to fund registered parties for advertising for the referendum. Instead the politicians prevented by law anyone other than themselves having television advertising. once again screwing the scrum in their favour. What we have instead is 10 Unions and two political parties putting their professional organisers and huge war-chests of union funds up against a couple of blokes from the Hawkes Bay.
