Tamihere embraces Charter Schools

Say what you will about John Tamihere, but the one thing you can’t accuse him of is being beholden to political dogma.

He has looked at what Charter Schools can offer Maori, who are failing badly in the current system, and thinks he can use the system to benefit students. He will, of course, now become a target for the teacher unions who will brand him a “class” traitor:

Waipareira Trust chief executive John Tamihere wants the charter school pilot expanded to West Auckland – where he says schools are failing children.

Act’s confidence and supply agreement sets out the schools will be set up in areas where educational underachievement is most entrenched.

South Auckland and Christchurch are the first two regions where the Government says that iwi, private, community groups and existing educational providers will compete to operate a local school or start a new one.

Waipareira is in discussions with Remuera’s Mt Hobson Middle School to establish a charter school for pupils in years 7 to 10.

Mr Tamihere said Ministry of Education figures which revealed that 30 per cent of students leave the region to attend other schools is indicative of parents’ dissatisfaction with educational results in the area.

“We’ve got a low track record of excellence. All we’re looking at doing is bringing the best practice from Remuera to the west.”

He may as well give it a go, because it is clear as the nose on your face that the current school system is failing Maori and Pasefika children.

Ahhh yes, the evil white man excuse once again.

  • Hakim of phut

Tamihere wants to set up a charter school in ‘his patch’, yes  with Donna Huata on the payroll we can guess how that will turn out.

    • Kosh103

Thats the problem with setting schools up along business lines and dropping the level of accountability.

      • thor42

Gee…. so “dropping the level of accountability” must be why charter schools have been raging successes overseas. Funny, that…..

Ok – time to come back with a snide comment now, kosh….

      • Kosh103

Get ya facts right thor. In the US for example, they are a disaster.

      • parorchestia

Rubbish Kosh.  They have been a great success in the US, especially in depressed (= black) areas where they have given bright black kids opportunities that they never had in the system you favour.  It is a common lie that you repeat.  Get your facts right.
If we listened to people like you we would still be in the Dark Ages since you hate progress so much.

  • Gazzaw

And the first two posts were from………………….

    Well, what a surprise.

    • Euan Rt

      The nay sayers….can’t cant can’t can’t can’t

      • Kosh103

More like people who know what they are talking about.

But I understand the right have their own version of *cough* “facts”.

      • Agent BallSack

Kosh and Hakims favourite song is Bohemian Like You, their favourite century is the 12th and of course they quaff Chardonnay by the gallon. BTW what the fuck do you do Hakim? Except lurk right wing blogs, that is?

      • Kosh103

Wrong as usual BS. I belive in teaching in the 21st century. It is National who is about 300 years behind the time.

      • Agent BallSack

Hah Kosh, yes the rights version of facts generally have basis in mathematical analysis,  whereas the lefts version of facts are whatever they made up this week.

      • Kosh103

Oh please ballsack. The right tell so many lies when it comes to education they would not know the truth if it came up and bit them on the nose.

    • parorchestia

I complement Whale for being so liberal and tolerant of fools.

  • @BoJangles

Tamihere has a pakeha brain inside brown skin.     Go for it, John, & Kia Ora……

    • Hakim of phut

So is that his excuse for 5 drink drive convictions ? Its the pakeha brain!

  • thor42

    Good ol’ kosh the leftie.

If the cavemen had all been lefties then the bloody wheel would never have been invented. .
    Anti-progress, anti-success, pro-union. Morons.

    • Hakim of phut

Do you really think the” wheel was invented by  a capitalist” ?
The western world we have today was because of the Age of Enlightenment against reactionaries like you.

      • SalaciousTCrumb

Actually Phut, the Age of Enlightenment followed a time where ideology and religion ruled over science and reason. Reactionaries often met a grim demise.

The founding prinicpals of democracy we cherise today came about in societies based whose economies were based on the tenants of captilalism.

But then I guess you knew that.

      • Agent BallSack

Haha Salacious, I thought of correcting HOP with some of the excellent articles out there on the subject but its like whipping a dead prostitute. The prostitute doesnt know and sooner or later you run out of energy.

      • SalaciousTCrumb

Nice analogy BallSack. A pimp to dead ho’s.

      • parorchestia

What a load of crap.  Let’s get things straight.  Capitalism is the system of free exchange of goods, services and capital.  It is the natural state for mankind, like it or not. All attempts to have different systems have been a disaster, eg North Korea (what a worker’s paradise) and Cuba (how nice that the Castros have become so rich). Even social democracies have to be very careful not to wreck capitalism.
Early advances, such as the wheel, the grind stone and wheels, would have been the subject of transactions so that the transactors through free exchange and division of labour could get their needs and wants fulfilled and both transactors became wealthier.  Yes, they were capitalists otherwise they would have never survived.

        Study some basic economics, twit.

    • Guest

He won’t implement it Thor. He would rather screw over our kids than be told what to do by his betters.

If the new Kokopu principal had any balls he would have rolled into town and clearly told him do as he is fucking told, implement the standards or he is down the road.

Shame we have teachers that would rather sabotage a programme than swallow some pride.

  • Kosh103

I see there have been two more swing and misses.

    • Greg M

I believe you. Kokopu looks like a good school.

      Heh! strike one.

  • barry

dammit it, it seems no matter what the white man does to help the brownie we always fail..
perhaps they should try to help themselves?

    • Kosh103

What a novel, and very good idea.

Say that in public and see what happens

  • Bob

A mate of mine is in school management. They have a smallish percentage of teaching staff who are absotruckingly useless but it is impossible to get rid of them. The students they have to allocate to these waste of space teachers are Maori, Pacific and Pakeha Trash … solely because the parents of these kids won’t/don’t complain.
    How sad is that?!

    • Kosh103

Actually it isnt impossible. If they are really that bad and your mate is that concerned he/she can implement a competency issue proceeding.

If you follow the right steps, anything is doable.

      • Greg M

A mate of mine is a prof at Auck uni, his wife is a prof in the Ed ministry. They both tell me the procedure for getting rid of poor teachers is actually very simple if you follow the steps.
However, neither of them can actually tell me what the procedure is.
Could you please enlighten us Kosh, or give a link to the relevant Govt. department, Steps and procedures in normal employment law are very clearly and easily obtained, but when it comes to the education sector I appear to have struck a dead end and I can’t find it, Cheers G.

      • Agent BallSack

Wow Greg, nicely put. Where’s Kosh to answer the hard questions? I would hazard a guess he can’t answer because he’s full of shit regarding this.
