Trevor Mallard – Scalper

Trevor Mallard is a dirty scalper, something he even passed a law to prevent…mind you that was for major events. Still the hypocrisy of someone who would once say:

“…it will be illegal to sell a ticket for more that its face value. In other words, you can on-sell a ticket, provided you do not make any profit on it…”

and to then go on and do exactly that, ripping off 4 kids along the way.

Labour MP Trevor Mallard has been accused of scalping tickets to a Wellington music festival.

The tickets to Saturday’s sold-out Homegrown festival have a face value of $95 each.

Whitireia music student Laura Signal, 19, and her three friends were desperate to attend so they bid for four tickets on Trade Me, paying a final price of $656.

Miss Signal was surprised when the trader turned out to be the Hutt South MP, who used his parliamentary email address for the auction.

She and her friends went to Mr Mallard’s Naenae office to collect the tickets from him in person.

“He came out and gave us the package really quickly and he kept saying: ‘It’s not what it looks like; it’s not what it looks like,’ to random passers-by.”

The students said they asked Mr Mallard about a “buy now” price during the auction, but he replied that he would let the auction run.

So not only hypocritical. but also against Ticketek’s rules and regulations:

6.Tickets may not, without the prior written consent of Ticketek or the Seller, be resold at a premium or used for advertising, promotion or other commercial purposes (including competitions and trade promotions) or to enhance the demand for other goods or services. If a ticket is sold or used in breach of this condition, the bearer of the ticket will be refused admission.

Trevor Mallard as is usual is full of excuses claiming that he had a birthday to go to. Well come on Nigel No-mates, I mean if you had 3 friends going surely you’d take them and who forgets birthdays?

Mallard has scalped these kids for $656 when the face value of each ticket was $95. At $164 per ticket that is 73% over face value, if that isn’t scalping then what is?

As if the scalping wasn’t bad enough Mallard, the big tough guy now tries to turn this episode into a blame game and tries to make out that he is the victim:

He believed the students had breached his privacy by revealing him as the ticket trader.

He was all over Twitter last night whinging and crying like a little bitch so his adherents could give him lots of there, theres and poor Twevor comments.

It was all quite pathetic, all the crocodile tears for a dirty scalper and filthy hypocrite.

  • Mickrodge

I’ve sold event tickets numerous times on TradeMe & i’ve also put the “Buy Now” at the face value price + fees & packaging.

It’s not difficult Trevor. You’re a dirty scalping scumbag & there’s no two ways about it.

    Enough with your weasel words.

If it walks likes a duck, quacks like a duck…

    • Dr Wang

Exactly Mickrodge – even worse though is that he is a serial offender. This is 4 years now that he has bought (cough, cough..) Homegrown tickets, then sold/scalped them on TradeMe! He has also onsold Wgtn 7s tickets, USA/Canada ice hockey tickets..etc etc. Trev really should invest in a diary so can avoid all these “double-bookings” he seems to make all the time!

    • AnonWgtn

No, Trevor is a retired one time cycling Teacher who get his fat cheque from the taxpayer, for now.

  • Troy

Yup one of the most slimiest parasites parliament has seen, still i’m sure the voters from his electorate will continue to be proud of their representative.

  • Petal

    On yer bike Trev!

  • Doug

Makes you wonder if this is a Labour Party initiative to
    raise funds for the Party.

  • honcho

He sold what little reputation he had left for a $273 profit … own goal.

  • An MP profiteering at the expense of poverty-stricken students is bad enough, but when that MP is the one who promoted the Major Events Management Act 2007, designed to STOP scalping and ambush marketing, the stench of hypocrisy is overwhelming.

Pay them back Trev; not just the 73% profit, but the whole damned lot.

    • Hakim of phut

Poverty stricken students ?  Even at $95 ,  you  are being absurd about what poverty really means

      • joe bloggs

That’s par for the course for you Hoik’em… turn a blind eye to a filty rich prick  to bash the students… you’re as big a hypocrite as that lying-scum parasite Mallard.

Fuck off back to school before your home room teacher finds out you’re wagging

      • Gazzaw

Just fuck off HoP. Your’e overstaying your welcome.

As for Mallard, well I could understand him putting the tickets on Trade Me to get his money back but he’s proved himself to be no better than the street scum that hang around outside sports stadia touting tickets to premium events.

Wasn’t it Mallard that brought in legislation against scalping during his tenure as Minister osf Sport?

      • Hakim of phut

The anti scalping was  for major events like RWC….. no body even in Wellington has heard of this ‘event’

      • Gazzaw

Jeez HoP you are exactly parroting the words used by the Duck himself in his latest news release.  Scalping is scalping, doesnt matter whatever way you look at it – this is a very bad look & one that Trev will never live down. I’m sure that the Whale Army will be taking it upon themselves to email Trev personally whenever there is a sold out event in their area to check whether he has any spare tickets.

      •  But Labour’s forever telling us that students are trapped in poverty…

      • joe bloggs

“… no body even in Wellington has heard of this ‘event’ ”

That’d be the same event that is so sold out, people have to buy tickets from scalpers…

      • rouppe

The terms and conditions of ticketec say they cannot be resold for a profit. The guy is a crook. Maybe a crook crook unless his leg is better

      • RightNow

Agreed Hakim, we’re being far too soft on students if they can afford to buy tickets at $95 each, let alone from a scalper. Time to cut their subsidies.

      • honcho

“….. no body even in Wellington has heard of this ‘event’ ”

Dont tell like HoK, just about every new zealander in the 18-25 age bracket nation wide knows of this event, its Wellingtons answer to the Big Day Out, and kind of a big deal.

Had sell out crowds every year since its inception, enough said.

      • Dr Wang

Does the Wellington International 7s tournament qualify as a “major event” Hakim? Trev has scalped his tickets to the 7s in the past on TradeMe – care to defend that?

      • Hakim of phut

Dr Wang heres your answer about Wellington 7s

Trade Me head of Trust and Safety Jon Duffy said ticket scalping was not illegal under the Major Events Management Act, as the Sevens was not listed as a major event in the legislation.

    • Guestosterone

not to excuse mallard’s actions but to call these students poverty stricken is a crock of shit and has actually nothing to to with the crux of this matter

    • Hakim of phut

The Wellington Sevens  isnt a ‘major event’ , so this little gathering  would be be  ‘crowd waiting for a cancelled train’

      • Pukakidon

        Hakim de Phuck

He seems to buy up all the tickets that appeal to young adults……. He is very smart and knows that they have not got a lot of money, but are easily parted with it.   He must be a very nice man to concentrate on that target audience, he knows he will make a sweet profit out of people who will pay any thing for these type of tickets, once the price has inflated well beyond the face price of course someone has got a birthday party somewhere in the world.   Very shrewd indeed

  • middleagedwhiteguy

Treveor Mallard + Internet = Dog Tucker.

  • Bob

Ha ha ha, busted! What a sad irrelevant little man he has become, no respect, no influence, no brains and no future… expect him to go even more toxic and whinging as he slides into total irrelevance and obscurity…

  • Catwoman

Trevor was probably given the tickets in the first place.  Also has a track record for selling these tickets every year on Trade Me.  Does he forget that he has a prior engagement each year?

    • Its da truth

      And you know this because…..?

  • nathan

Also engaged in a spot of software piracy…  where’s the harm!!!

    • Hakim of phut

Its not piracy to resell a computer and its software….making stuff up ….now what is that called

      •  It is if you’re also keeping the software licence.

If I sell you a computer with Office 2003 on it, but I’m keeping the licence for my own use on another PC, the copy on the computer becomes illegal.

The only time the licence automatically goes with the computer is an OEM licensed copy of the _originally_ installed OS. (as you cannot use that licence on another machine)

Now I can sell you a computer with it’s software if I also hand over the software licences. But selling a computer, _with_ the software with a “promise you’ll delete it *wink wink*” is considered piracy.

And he specifically states in the Trademe item that he is _not_ providing the licences for the installed software, and yet he advertises it as coming with the software.

      • Hakim of phut

Roger , when was the last time you bought a computer  ??
All windows computers now come with Microsoft Office preinstalled. You have the buy the license separably to  activate it.

      • nathan

Errrmmmm…. yes it is, to sell a PC with no valid licence key for a copy of Windows or Office, on the proviso that it’s for testing purposes. Yes some PCs come with a trial version of Office, but I’m yet to see a trial version of Windows XP Pro.

      • James Gray

Hakim – Yes, you can install an OEM trial of office with a new PC. Not back in the Office 2003 days. And not windows

    • Guest

Interesting to see selling near new HP laptops he keeps getting.

      • Tom

Hohoho this could get REALLY interesting!

      • Bobo the idiot

I think it must be a business.   I hope he is paying tax for all these computers and tickets he sells….

Selling computers with unlicensed software regardless if it is for testing/using/whatever is illegal.   Once it changes hands he has sold it and therfore committed a crime, why does he not format C before handing them over????  We all know why.  There is no such thing as “I will steal this but your fault if I give it to you and you dont return it”.

Very dodgy man indeed every thing about him is slimey

  • Guestosterone

be a man trevor and donate the profit from the sale to the oragnisers of the next hero parade

  • Lofty

How surprising from this hypocrite and Labour party pretender.

Now he is resorting to whining and veiled threats about privacy breaches…..sook.

    • Doug_S

I believe DIDDUMS is he work you were looking for..

      • Doug_S

        Edit above:

I believe DIDDUMS is the word you were looking for.

Damn keyboard is female..never does what I tell it to do.

  • Kthxbai

bub242 of Lower Hutt City, name Trevor, sold 4 tickets on Sunday for $656.

    Listing 447378839:

    The lineup includes:
Shihad, The Feelers, Opshop, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Six60, Blacklist, The
Black Seeds, Kora, The Checks, Shotgun Alley, The Thomas Oliver Band,
Black River Drive, Che Fu – King Kapisi, The Adults, the list goes on.
Kiwi Music’s Biggest Day is back with a monster line-up, a new stage and
plenty of surprises for your Jim Beam Homegrown experience.
    The Wellington Waterfront – Saturday 18th February – 2012.
Tickets will be couriered free of charge.”

    • Gazzaw

‘Tickets will be couriered free of charge’.

He could well afford it given his profit margin or did he use Parliamentary couriers or a courier bag courtesy of his electorate office?

      • Tom

I bet we paid for the courier! Such generosity with other people’s money….

  • Kthxbai

And Catwoman is right, he’s sold them previously on TM, seems to be a regular thing.

    • Roger

It will be the same birthday and same bad memory. Funny how how he remembered what he “paid” and to sell them. Hypocrisy from politician is inexcuseable – though unsurprising in this case.

  • Vlad

And he has on-sold tickets to the Wellington 7’s & an international ice hockey game.

    • Gazzaw

Wellington 7s? That contravenes the law that he introduced. Welington 7s is a major international sports event and sold out in a matter of minutes.

      • Hakim of phut

Trade Me head of Trust and Safety Jon Duffy said ticket scalping was not illegal under the Major Events Management Act, as the Sevens was not listed as a major event in the legislation.

    • Hakim of phut

But were those tickets in excess of their face value ?

      • Gazzaw

Your call Vlad – can you track those details? Knowing Trev’s record though I’ll bet you a quid to a lump of dog-poo that he didn’t lose on the deal!!

      • Vlad

Next time you meet him, why don’t you ask him?  While you are at it, ask if he paid for them in the first place or got freebies.

  • joe bloggs

“Event organiser Mark Wright said on-selling was an issue every year once tickets sold out. Mr Wright told the Dominion Post on-sellers were “profiteering off the work that my team and I are putting in to it” and there was little he could do about it.”
To give Liarbore credit – if there’s one thing they do well, it’s score own-goals – and star striker Mallard is the best of them all. Not only is he a reapeat scalper but he’s abusing his privileged position using his parliamentary email address to transact shady business deals.
Even the worms are turning – Scott across at Imperator Fish has just offered his services to help draft a private member’s bill to ban Trevor Mallard from the internet.

    • Gazzaw

Russel Norman has just chimed in attacking Trev’s weakest of excuses that he didn’t read the fine print on the tickets. You can imagine the Duck taking that as an excuse if he wasn’t the guilty party.

As a SMOG this is a real landmark event & Trev never allowed to forget it. It just provides endless ammunition for the Nat jokesters in the house.

  • Blam

I don’t see any issue with Ticket Scalper, it is the true market, someone sells a product for a price that someone is prepared to pay for it.

What I can’t stand is the Anti-Capitalist Left being Capitalist

What I can.’t stand is the Capitalist Extreme Right being Anti-Capitalist

I can’t stand hypocrisy, and theres two examples on show here.

All it takes now is for Cactus Kate to show her true Anti-Capitalist feelings in order to have a go at Mallard, for behaviour that she and Whaleoil no doubt recommend, but just wont tell you for this purpose

    • joe bloggs

Cockhole – Cam (and every other media outlet in NZ) is simply pointing out the hypocrisy in Mallard’s actions versus his weasel words, along with Mallard’s repeated breaches of the Trademe auction rules, to say nothing of his misuse of a parliamentary email address for shady business deals and personal gain

      • Blam

You think my point about calling out Hypocrites is ‘cockhole’ then you only go onto prove my point , wierd…

    • I have no problem at all with scalping…it is called market forces….what I do have a problem with is filthy hypocrisy…if scalping is bad for Rugby it is band for local Kiwi bands….surely…ask Trevor he passed the anti-scalping law.

      • Blam

Your term “Filthy Scalper” contradicts your self proclaimed high moral standard of ‘market forces’, like I said, theres two hypocrites in this article.

The hypocrites and the hypocrisy of those filthy hypocrites is my point.

        Stones, glass houses

  • toby_toby

Trevor Mallard. Nasty is as nasty does.

  • Socialism Hater

So good to see a complete cunt like Mallard shown for being the hypocritical prick we all know he is….  :-)

    • Gazzaw

It’s called karma – well overdue in his case.

  • Super_Guest

Not surprising. He’s probably a little light on cash having his ass sat on the opposition benches.

    • Kosh103

He will have more cash than you I would bet.

      • Tom

You are a very little man aren’t you KOSH?

      • Super_Guest

Yeah, but it’s all my money anyway. And actually it really depends on what sort of savings he’s got together. Good to see the DipEd in economics is helping you out now, though, Kosh.

      • Kosh103

Yawn, try harder Tom. That was lame.

  • Agent BallSack

Homegrown quite clearly states you cannot resell the tickets for more than face value. In fact they have gone so far as to ask for links of scalped tickets so they can cancel them. PS see you all there.

    • Hakim of phut

Standard  wording….. you would be surprised how many promoters on sell tickets for more than they are worth…. very profitable… and is often the reason they are ‘sold out in minutes’

  • RightNow

I’m just pleased it’s not illegal, or it would just end up costing taxpayers when Trev tried to push through a retrospective law change.

  • Hakim of phut

    Classic case of buyers remorse.

Typical of over pampered national leaning middle classes as these students appear.

Mummy and Daddy think we are spending too much of their money

    • ZOLTAN

Classic Labour. Lose the argument, resort to personal attacks.

  • middleagedwhiteguy

Mallard is being FLAYED by Sean Plunket on ZB in Wellington.

    Apparently Mallard does this frequently.

  • Kosh103

Silly thing for Trevor to do. But as for trying to say these were poor students… bullshit.  Having been a poor student I can tell you, you do not have $95 lying aroud the place for tickets. And seeing as these students paid even more than that they are hardly poor.

    Stupid more like it.

But having said all that, Trevor was just as stupid doing this.

    • Guestosterone

      perfect summation kosh

now maybe you could use that from-outside-the-square logic with educational matters/discussions

      • Kosh103

I call it as I see it/ or know to be true. That includes educational matters. And I am right inregards to anything that has been discussed on here to do with education.

        But lets not get sidetracked.

      • Agent BallSack

LMFAO Kosh. That’s right because you’re the Minister of Education.

      • Kosh103

Ballsack if I were the Min of Ed I can tell you now we would not be having the backward looking policies that National has.

    •  Kosh; it’s LABOUR who always bang on about the “poor students”…

    • greenmuppet

Is it really Kosh or someone is imposting? Regardless, should have said “Natural thing for Trevor to do..”

    • ZOLTAN

How would you know? These people are really really really into NZ music. Perhaps they have been saving since last Homegrown, hence not buying when they were on sale ages ago?

  • Agent BallSack

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they were Comps. Meaning Mallard made 650 on the deal not just the value above the selling price.

    • fact/reality-check..

       in the interview i found..

      ..he denies they were comps.

      [email protected]

      • Darwin

It’s lucky we’re paying you to find “cherries” like that.

  • Gomango64

the problem here is trevors hypocrisy, and also the ineptitude of the festival organisors.  Price your tickets correctly!  Then scalpers wont be able to make a profit.  Don’t bleat on like a baby because of your inability to price your eservice correctly.

Trevor is a hypocrite but scalping in itself is not a bad thing – it should incentivise ticket sellers to price their product correctly.  If the argument is about accessibility for special interest groups then have preferential pricing – non-transferable tickets sold on the cheap to the special interest groups, the rest of the tickets sold at the market clearing price.

If the true value of home grown tickets really is $156 then the organisors have pissed away 50% of potential revenue.

    • Hakim of phut

Thats why  promoters and their agents scalp tickets themselves at above par

The dirty little secret behind ‘sold out in minutes’

  • Johno1234
  • RightNow

Tickets to Homegrown: $95 each. Profit from scalping: $61 each.
Trevor’s supply of complimentary tickets drying up: PRICELESS!

  • Auto_immune

If the organisers cancel the bought tickets due to scalping, can the students get their money back from Trev?

  • Alf

We need a Capital Gains Tax

  • Jester

    This is bad for National!

    • Dr Wang

Jester – do you think it could even bring the government down?

  • Jman

From the Q and A on that trademe listing:

hey there mate il come pick tickets up now for 500

    hingpett (0 )
    11:56 am, Thu 9 Feb

I will let the auction run. And i think your price is cheeky.

    11:59 am, Thu 9 Feb

So Trevor thought that getting $120 more than he paid for the tickets was a “cheeky” price. Pretty obvious then that this was just a way to make profit on the tickets, after his success with it last year. This is the very definition of scalping.

  • middleagedwhiteguy

Have a listen to Trev trying to dig himself out of a hole here!!!

  • Agent BallSack

I have 2 tickets to the GA area I will sell them for $400 each firm. Its not hypocritical because I’m not the person who drafted the law against it.

    • Hakim of phut

There is no law against  scalping tickets.
Big events like the RWC that had huge taxpayer subsidys were a very small exception

  • SHG

Question: how does Mallard come by tickets to these events? I hope for his sake that he purchases them out of his own pocket before selling them. Because if he got them as Parliamentary freebies and then sold them for a personal profit…

    • We should request the information from Homegrown under the OIA!

  • Gazzaw

Has anyone tried to put an appropriate post on Red Alert yet?  Bet they have an extra shift of ‘moderators’ on hand.

  • Don’t you love how amoral & inherently stupid people always trip themselves up; what pure gold this is! Surely this, more than anything will mark the sad & pathetic end to a sad, pathetic & moral repugnant MP.

The fact that he said an offer for $500 was “cheeky” shows is true colours for sure…..but what’s the bet that weak sap of a man Shearer wont do squat about it.

I have no issue with people selling tickets for the face value plus the success fee of the auction, but to make a profit is vile.I would be interested to know whether he in fact paid $95 for each ticket or did he score the early bird ones which were $75? Wouldn’t surprise me if it was the latter.

I have sold these tickets before but never for profit – I consider that theft against the organisers AND the bands…if people rip these events off then it is the bands that ultimately miss out.  This is just the same as burning music; it completely undermines the music industry.

On the bright side, thank fuck duck boy wont be at the gig!

  • Doug_S

Look at the comments in the Q&A…First one says it all…Who is the Cheeky one then Trevor??

hey there mate il come pick tickets up now for 500 hingpett (0 )  11:56 am, Thu 9 FebI will let the auction run. And i think your price is cheeky. 11:59 am, Thu 9 Feb

  • Bobo the Idiot

I hope this git is declaring his dodgy suplemental income so it can be taxed to pay for his constituents.  How much more obscene profiteering has this toe rag been up to…..

Vote for labour………  Your a bloody idiot!!!

  • Its da truth

Suprise, suprise! All the right wing free market Whale Blubber supporters are crying about a LABOUR politician doing what most people do without any concern. They wanted the tickets, the market determined the price, suck it up and get over it. You’re so see through and your emperor’s wearing no clothes.

  • Does not Trevor Mallard know that the Fairfax owned site has a connected tab to the TradeMe site which means that those journalists can see the er stuff that is going on there?

  • Owl

What was the prior arrangement he had to attend? Look at this way. A senior politician has an army of support services to tell them where to go…I should know…so reality is this? A better offer came along….so what was the new engagement …that is the real story.

    Love the OWL

  • Heathernjohnc

the number of times i’ve read all your comments re mallard and thought them a bit harsh. have to agree with you all this time.thanks trev just when the opposition should be concentrating on the government you let them off the hook, for what? a days pay! stupid -stupid -stupid.
