Up for a maggot pack?

Sanders remains the official face of Kentucky ...

I can’t stand KFC…now I have a new reason never to eat it again:

An Auckland family has sworn off KFC after their chicken and chips came with a side of writhing maggots.

Christina, who did not want her last name used, said the family got the chicken meal from the Botany Downs store about 3.30pm yesterday.

They took it home and left it on the bench for a couple of hours before dishing it up for their 11-year-old daughter, 7-year-old son and the children’s grandfather about 5.30pm.

Christina and her husband then went out for a short time and were surprised to find on their return that the meal hadn’t been finished.

They were even more surprised – and horrified – when they found out why; daughter Chinen had been about to take a bite of chicken when she looked down to find it writhing with maggots.

“Luckily she looked before she put it into her mouth,” Christina said.

“She was like `there’s maggots in my chicken’ – she was a little teary-eyed.”

Christina said there were about 20 live maggots in the small piece of chicken.

I really dislike KFC, but I just can’t believe this story. I can’t see how ‘writhing’ maggots could survive the cooking process. Who leaves cooked chicken on a bench for two hours!

    • RAS

I agree the story made me feel ill but logically the maggots could not possibly survive the heat of cooking, more likely they are a result of leaving the cooked chicken sitting on a bench for two hours which in itself is a recipe for a good dose of food poisioning. Everyone surely knows that cooked chicken must be kept refrigerated unless eaten immediately?.

    • Well there is that…plus Auckland is really humid right now so at the very least they were risking a good dose of salmonella

      • Brian Smaller

House fly maggots take about day to hatch from eggs – so while the chicken on the bench could be flyblown, the maggots would not have hatched in two hours.

  • ConwayCaptain

Agree Peter.  In the warmth of a summer day and also the heat from the chicken any food left on the bench will attract maggots or whatever.

Another of our “highly educated” not my fault people.

  • Brian Smaller

I was just thinking how congealed and fatty KFC would be if left cold for several hours. Yuk. The maggots would probably be an improvement.

  • Gazzadelsud

fraid I agree too, cooked chicken left on a bench for a few hours!!!.  Dumbarse parents.  Lucky they only got flyblown instead of food poisoning!

But of course running to the paper, doing the sad face thing about your own stupidity doesnt get you the possibility of freebies and handouts does it?

  • Butts_McButts

While it might have been two hours on the bench (which seems pretty quick for maggots to develop) I wonder how long it was left standing the KFC before then.

  • Gazzadelsud

Nope butts, I have seen fly eggs hatch in minutes in the right conditions, hot and humid in Auckland yesterday was it?

  • Unless the chicken had been sitting cooked and at room temp all day at KFC I say our family deserves the Idiots of the Year Award. What idiot leaves chicken on a bench for two hours on a hot summers day (the violent storm yesterday was a testament of that) then decides to then eat it.

FFS not much brains seemed to be dished out over there…
I hope they all got violent food poisoning…

    • The Robberdog

That would have been KFCs fault too..

      • Correct it would also be KFCs fault. If KFC were at fault for food safety shoddyness then let the Council inspectors determine that accordingly. But the family regardless of KFCs action leaves a lot to be desired for utter stupidity on basic food safety errors…

  • Callum

Takes a day for eggs to hatch, possible if they had a fault in their ovens and didn’t get hot enough. The chicken is pre-cooked and then reheated, could have been exposed to flies at some point. I very much doubt it though.

    • Joes

“The chicken is pre-cooked and then reheated,”

No it’s not. I worked there for a little while when I was 13.  Whatever you want to say about the overall quality of the food, the chicken was bought in individual Tegal bags, opened only when ready to be breaded and fried.

The bosses were always strict on throwing it out of the warmer once it had been there for max length of time, we weren’t even allowed to take it home.

The best part of working there was the custom burgers… we could come up with some tasty combinations on occasion.  Haven’t eat there in a couple of years now though.

  • Gazzadelsud

but yes, it is possible that the warming drawers at KFC were got at by flies, despite th flytraps etc.

Of course that would mean more than one punter was statistically likely to have noticed wouldnt it?

  • Grizz30

This story has Bullshit written all over it. It reminds me of the time someone found maggots on a freshly cooked McDonalds hamburger in Whangarei. If there were 20 maggots on one piece of chicken then other pieces would have also been affected. It is likely the maggots came from the home and the chicken was lying around longer than 2 hours. Of all things that could give food poisoning off chicken the family hone in on what they can see rather than microbes they cannot.

I do not buy KFC but I feel this family are being disingenuous trying to

  • Doublepost.

  • Grizz30

Extract money from KFC. I wonder if the gambling debts are catching up with them.

I hope they paid extra for the fresh salad.

I’ve got a funny feeling the chicken was left there for 24 + 2 hours. It doesn’t ring true what they said. If you decide to go get some KFC for lunch or tea what do you do? You head to a park or home, everyone sits down and has a munch.

The only chicken that gets left to sit there are the leftovers. What happens then? Everyone is full and can’t be bothered to move so they leave the leftovers where they are and go have a snooze. Not hard to see that it gets left there overnight, the flies come along and lay their eggs, and presto the next day when the kid goes to have a munch then there are wee lil maggots crawling all over it.

KFC need to find out when the transaction took place and do a timeline traceback. I guarrentee that the family were telling porkies.

  • titanuranus

Seriously, they run these maggot stories every couple of months , be it KFC, McDs, BK  the numbers never stack up. Slow news day.
Never any mention of the egg casings, I guess they ate those , gives it that extra crunch, mmmmm tasty.

  • Steve (North Shore)

Blame KFC, blame maggots, blame the weather, blame regulations etc.

How about blaming the stupid people who left it on the bench then tried to blame everything except themselves?

  • Mr_Blobby

Personally I don’t like KFC it is far too fatty for my liking. But there is never a shortage of cars in the drive through at botany. This indicates that the food is being turned over a good rate and not being left lying around.
A check back through the store CCTV would probably show the purchase a day earlier. It is a pity that they report these sorts of stories without really checking the facts.
Sounds like more stupid people making bad lifestyle choices and then trying to take the piss.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidly.

  • Gazzaw

This has scam written all over it. KFC should nail the fuckers if they can prove it wasn’t their fault.

  • Pukakidon

Out of all the fast food outlets KFC always seems to have the problem with cleanliness. It must be the way they store and cook the food.

    • Steve (North Shore)

      What problem with cleanliness Pukakidon?
Who are the other fast food outlets that you compare to?
      Facts sunshine, put them up.
Pukakidon looks like a ‘poor me I’m stupid’ supporter

    • Southshore

That is absoklutely nonsense I think it says more about the customers actually those who are dumb enough to buy any cooked food and leave it open to bacteria for 2 hours…

     Maggots found in KFC chicken

By Abby Gillies and Sharon Lundy

Shabby reporting by Abby & Sharon (how come it takes 2 girls to “report” this shit?)

Does you mentioning it, make you a “repeater” Cam?

  • In Vino Veritas

Hmmm. Ministry of silly names – Chinen? Perhaps maggots were a punishment.
