Many of these proverbs need to be called out for the bullshit they are.

If Henry Ford hadn’t chased his fantasy, the average man might not have been able to afford a motor vehicle for decades.

What this proverb says, essentially is: keep your head down, don’t dare to dream and strive for something better, be happy with what you have, don’t take risks.

It’s the risk takers that advance the standard of living for the rest of us.

    • Well, that’s a little harsh. I’d like to add that even as an agnostic leaning to atheist, I find many of the proverbs inspirational and motivational. I don’t think this one means what you’ve said it means. Going after a difficult goal or aspiration is a little different to chasing fantasies.

Fair call – it WAS harsh, and in fact going back over the proverbs, the vast majority I can agree with – especially the biblical version of the grasshopper/ant story. But there are a few that grate – I will comment on all I find myself at odds with.

I guess the aspiration/dream/fantasy continuum has fantasy at one extreme, where it is dreaming to the point of being unrealistic and impractical. However what is impossible today might be taken for granted as the norm fifty years from now.

No Richard this proverb means – A farmer who tilleth his land and works hard day after day will have plenty of good. On the other hand a man who lives in a dream world either physically or mentally and does not get his work done shows a lack of judgment (v. 11).

Henry Ford worked hard – day after day.You are confusing vision with fantasy. They are not the same.

Richard it says fantasy not dreams. I think you are confused.  Dreams are good because one can take action based on their dreams. Fantasy is for those that prefer to believe in magic and never strive for anything.
