Finland Facts – More Unemployment and Farm Subsidies

In his first (and only) speech, the invisible Labour Leader David Shearer said he would try to make New Zealand more like Finland.

He forgot to mention, among other things, that Finland has higher unemployment than New Zealand, it still has farm subsidies, and many there still resent the 90s reforms enacted by the Leader that Shearer says he admires.

Finland is not the Scandinavian paradise that Labour pretends it is. It has its own set of problems.

Looks like the mullet is still in vogue there too.

    •  Yeah – that’s ‘cos they ARE stuck but in the 80’s not the 90’s….even their humour is very 80’s. Agree with you ConwayCaptain We shot ourselves in the foot by being world first at something good. USA protectionism is always going to be our biggest barrier in trade.

      • ConwayCaptain

Not jsut the USA.  If the US and EU got rid of their agri subsidies, and this is 50% of the EU Budget, it would help all the 3rd world countries who would then be able to export their crops into the EU and US.

The US agri subsidy is v high as well.  The amount of grains that they export out of NOLA, G Lakes is phenomenal.  The G Lake bulkers are huge and have lighter build than deep sea ships and they transport huge amounts down to the grain terminals and they pay their crews HUGE salaries.

A deep sea ship buiolt to transit the St Lawrence is v narrow for the size and rolls like a pig in shit.

NZ is one of the few countries in the world that does not subsudise farming.  However we now have to get rid of the othere subsidies, WFF,DPB etc etc

    • AngryTory

not to mention the really big ones: health, edjumakation, and above all the codger-dole, super.

    • Peter Wilson

Except, we do of course subsidise farming still. Who cleans up the mess that is in our waterways now, created in the main by farmers?

  • Polishpride

I think the idea behind it is a good one which is looking at areas of best practice/results around the world and seeing if they can be incorporated into a plan/solution for NZ.
    Eg Education – Finlnd
    Drug Laws – Portugal
    Democracy – Sweden
    Fast food – America

and let’s not forget their violent crime and  homicide rate per 100,000 of population is twice ours…nothing to  with their hugely liberal penal policies though…

    •  More to do with their climate and high rates of mental illness – lack of vitamin D

And the fact they live in Finland

  • If this is considered off topic I apologise… but can I draw attention to today’s cartoon in the Herald? I would consider this to be racist, xenophobic trash from the Herald who were not shy in heaping scorn on Brownlee, even though he got (most, some, 50%?) of his facts right.

All the scandi countries plur Russia Poland and the Baltic States have MAJOR alcoholism problems not withstanding the prohibitive cost of alcohol in the Scandi countries.

In the winter it is dark and gllomy for most of the time.

Sailed with Swedes on a ship off the Maui Platform and for the week they were ashore they were perpetually PISSED.

Interesting thing with Finland is most of the energy sector is privatised, and nuclear power makes up just under 20% of their power supply.  Two points which they attribute their cheap power prices to.  Also they are about to build another couple of reactors so that number will increase.  I think the really nice thing is that they are planning on just burying their nuclear waste in the ground…

Can we be more like Norway then please

    • Boss Hogg

Easy – Find lots of Oil then Drill, Dig, Sell.  Next – add a huge dose of Socialism, then intorduce insane taxes and social controls.  Get loads of Iraqi doctors to drive your taxis.  Then Hellen will invite heself over for some fresh air.

      Sound Good ??

The only bit I want is the Oil – oh – but the Greens, so we stay as we are and work out how to get the social controls and taxes only.  Bugger.

lets not get too smug,nz foodbanks are struggling to keep up with demand and its not just the unemployed that are using them.thats right we did away with farm subsidies and we all know who squealed tthe loudest over that don’t we? all those good ol’ boys from the federated farmers who were only too ready to preach to the rest of us the virtues of independance and self reliance.

Well buttfuck, without primary produce, NZ would be pretty rooted – it’s not like there is a big global market for the other free-grazing, shit producing, multi-calving, 2 tonne animals we excel at producing – the goateed dole bludger. Pity we can’t export them like milk powder to the Chinese!
