WhaleTech: A cheap 7″ Android Tab for the kids

Still looking for that last minute stocking filler? ?Then have a look at this Android 7? tablet from Chinese company Ainol, called the NOVO7 Legend.

Ainol Novo 7 Legend

Let?s get down to the price first – available off TradeMe for $149 delivered, this 8GB unit is a great little tab for the younger children.

It has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is in line with ebook readers rather than most other tablets. This gives it the right proportions, and weighing in at 362 grams, it?s easy to hold for the littlest of arms.

At that price, you?re going to have to be realistic. ?It?s not going to hold all your music, although you can add up to 32GB via the SD card slot.

The 800×600 resolution doesn?t sound high, but the 7? screen is bright and sharp, and reading ebooks offers nice crisp letters. ?Playing games and browsing are sharp, videos will be fine for the little ones, but you will expect better results yourself.

Running Android 4.0.4, it?s pretty snappy for its modest 1.0 GHz Allwinner Boxchip A13 CPU, and that?s partly due to Ainol keeping the ROM pretty clean. ?(For the brave and tech inclined, the Jelly Bean ROM was released some days ago).

The Tab comes with Google Play store loaded, and most apps run fine. ?It runs Angry Birds smoothly (the litmus test), and with a few stops and starts most other low to medium end games come up to speed just fine.

As a home Wifi tablet that?s just lying on the couch or knocking around a bedroom as an e-reader slash Internet browser, you really can?t get past this little unit. ?Especially if you have a heart attack every time your little darling picks up your iPad or high end Android Tab, and you really, really just want them to have one of their own.
