Apparently my voice is so monotonous it keeps people awake

Last night was my last night of my NewstalkZB summer stint.

After a slight altercation in the newsroom about scheduling, which shall remain between the protagonists, I spent the night talking with people about whether or not David Cullen Bain should get compensation.

But…on Pam Corkery’s Facebook page there was this comment from an unhappy listener.

I’m new to talkback, but colour me surprised, I would have thought a voice that keeps people awake and angry is a requirement for talkback.

After the discussion about David Cullen Bain, it was the consensus of most callers that he is a Lucky Man that he isn’t still in jail.

  • Little wonder that Sylvia wants the lefties to come back. Keep it up Cam; you’re obviously getting under some skins!

  • I’m always a bit puzzled when talkback program/station managers arrange for cover and put someone in that has a bias that’s opposed to the regular host.

The existing listeners aren’t going to feel like the replacement is better than the normal host. The audience you go in with is going to feel their time slot has been captured by someone they don’t agree with.

    This has to be deliberate?

It’s bloody annoying to a loyal listener of that particular host mind you.

You did great last night Cam. Every week you were better compared to the week before.

  • Hugewon

The only one who got cut off was the guy who got really angry with you early on in the night…

  • Rodger T

I gave up listening to talkback, mainly cos` of the endless fucking whining from the callers.
I don`t know how anybody can do that job, kudos.

    • Mitch82

      Couldn’t agree more.

Also, heard a great comment from a guitarist I watch on Youtube – ‘You’re nobody till somebody you don’t know online hates you.’

    • Hugewon

I normally can’t stand it – the usual callers are either old with no marbles or stoned or drunk.

    • Rodger T

And that was just Sportstalk ZB.

    • Gazzaw

I did a five week stint in hospital four years ago and was reduced to listening to graveyard shift talkback. It’s dreadful – Corkery, a bloke called Bruce & I think Oliver Driver. Listening to them was bad enough but the callers were something else again. The topics weren’t exactly rivetting either with Bruce (?) having a particular penchant for running silly surveys & competitions. Corkery did her usual socialist raving playing to her gullible geriatric audience. I don’t know how you cope with it Cameron.

      • Was pleased to see the last of Olliver Dribble.

  • williamabong

Don’t know how you can do it, my first reaction would be to tell most of them to” harden the fuck up”, then push the button on them.
Poor old Sylvia sounds like the batteries went flat on her favourite “Single girls best friend”

  • cows4me

Poor old Sylvia the lefty insomniac, can’t sleep until the lefty dribble coming out of Corkery bores her brainless. You doing fine Whale sounding more confident every week, no wonder the lefty’s want you silenced.

  • MarcWills

TBH, if I turned on a radio and heard yet another talkback session on DBain, then I would probably leave off the Mogadons for that night too. Would be like using 2 drugs when only one was needed.

  • Travis Poulson

Listening to Pam or listening to Cam..gee thats a toughie…..

  • Pam and Tim have a light, bantering style that is relaxing to listen to.

Hardcore politics in comparison, is quite different. For a Sunday night, maybe not the target audience.

Maybe spending a bit of time listening to other popular talk back hosts would be good idea.

    • Bunswalla

Wouldn’t have thought discussion on David Bain was hardcore politics, but I guess it depends on your starting point.

      • That’s what the discussion settled on. I lost track of how many subjects Slater tried to introduce that were very political.

        • Bunswalla

Perhaps it would have been more to your liking if he started talking about paedophile Catholic priests and the church covering it up for decades?

          • Mostly_Harmless

Criticising the Catholic Church is perfectly reasonable – but bringing religious ad-hominems into an unrelated discussion is a bit out of line.

          • Bunswalla

There were no ad homs in my post, religious or otherwise. Please try to keep up.

          • I don’t care what he talks about, as I’m not a normal, Sunday night talkback listener. I just tuned in out of curiosity, but didn’t last the first hour (it was really slow).

    • Obviously not a listener otherwise you would have realised the stupidity of your comment…I have barely talked politics at all in three weeks.

      • But I did listen. To nearly the first hour.

I have also been holding back with my opinion of that first hour, trying to be constructive rather than not.

Maybe you don’t think you were talking politics, but to me, you were. The point being, Sunday night listeners are probably used to lighter fare, if Pam and Tim are anything to go by. You should listen to them, to know what you are up against.

        • Hugewon

He mentioned KimDotcom and David Bain in the first hour – Nothing like “The greens are ruining this country” or “guns guns guns”

          • Mr_Blobby

Guns and Politics should not be mixed together, ever. Dotcom and Bain have both been political footballs.

      • Dead Bloody right Whale. Actually I was expecting a lot more political content than what you delivered.

    • Pam and Tim together are crap. Tim is besotted by the old hag. They struggle to get callers. It is just about time to call petra and that other silly prik back.

  • Dion

I think they should put you and Pam on together.

  • Phar Lap

I thought Cams voice was completely relaxing.I thought of all the deadlines he has to meet ,on his blog site, Truth magazine and perhaps alot more than we would care to imagine.Last night i was lucky to hear him handle a lot of difficult callers with aplomb. It was a fluke to turn on the radio,as that woman with a mans face and voice Pam Cockery and a political reject in another life ,caused me to abandon listening to Newstalk ZB in the 9.00PM to Midnight time slot on a Sunday Night.Perhaps as a common sense gesture she will now step aside for a genuine talkback host.Cameron Slater.

    • Gazzaw

She’s obviously got a few mates at ZB because she’s always popping up as a locum or on a slot with Larry Williams. I always turn off when she comes on, she just infuriates me with her inane leftist comments & her refusal to listen to other points of view.

      • Phar Lap

Agree completely. She is from the defunct Alliance Party.Such pests as Willie Jackson ,Matt Mc Carten, she taught that type of loser ,then got out of Parliament because she was even too crude for that lot of troughers, and sick ****S.

      • They have her signed up to a contract. Believe other hosts have no choice but to allow her in their 4 minute slots. Very much doubt her contract will be renewed when it runs out.

  • David

I don’t understand where Sylvia is coming from. I think Sylvia’s rant is probably due to the fact that people like her don’t like change. The complaints she has about Cameron apply equally to Pam Corkery. Corkery has a monotonous high-pitched voice and
regularly abuses and cuts off people who don’t agree with her.

While I haven’t listened to Cameron on Newstalk (I tend to be sleeping at that time) I’m sure he couldn’t be any worse than Corkery. In fact, I’m sure Cameron is a bloody sight better.

  • Dave

I enjoyed the show last night, Well done Cam. Listened to the first 1.5 hours live and recorded the remainder and listened to it this morning. Particularly liked the open and relaxed way you welcomed callers, you sounded like you had been at it for years. I think the most telling thing about your nature, is your knowledge of current and political affairs, a lot or callers were not aware of the facts of the subjects they called you on.

As to Corkery, she definitely has things round the wrong way for a media career, a voice suited to the Print media, and a face, well, definitely only suited to radio. Sorry, but cant stand the strangled cat voice, or the er……. look. By comparison, the fat german is looking good.

  • ZB is really scrapping the bottom of the barrel with Corkery.

    • Gazzaw

What ZB doesnt appear to have woken up to is that their competition now is not restricted to Red Radio and other NZ talkback stations. They have their heads so far up their arses because they are miles ahead in the ratings but they seem to have overlooked that very serious competition exists at the click of a website icon. I like ZB & listen to Leighton Smith & Larry Williams avidly but in between them is that clown ‘kaumatua’ Danny Watson. I just switch to the morning talkback on 2UE Sydney which I find excellent & beats listening to Watson’s reverse racism hands down.

  • pukakidon

Cam good three weeks on Sunday night. I have tuned in to listen to your program, last night was especially good because you must be the only one in media who isn’t so dishonest and gutless that they cant speak the truth. They all know he his guilty as sin but they wont say it. I think that Corkery and that clown Bruce need to get a room they are constantly flirting and they talk utter rubbish. Will be tune out once again for the Sunday night mumblings of the two morons who seem to be sexually frustrated .

  • fozzie2

Why are you stalking Pam Corkery’s Facebook page – are to really that self obsessed ?

  • Steve (North Shore)

Never ever listen to ZB or any other yackback station. But if ZB changed to the PC center I might.
