Lucky they weren’t Glocked

I really don’t get people who oppose the Taser being deployed. They come up with all sorts of spurious details to oppose them.

A disproportionate number of people with mental health issues are being stung by Tasers, figures show.

Since the nationwide rollout of Tasers in March 2010, they have been drawn by police officers 1320 times and discharged 212 times.

The battery-powered stun guns fire electric barbs, which penetrate a person’s skin and deliver a shock of up to 50,000 volts.

Numbers released under the Official Information Act show nearly a third of those hit were considered by police to have mental health issues.

Mental Health Foundation chief executive Judi Clements said they had always feared those with mental health problems would be a target for officers using Tasers and the figures confirmed that.

She was also concerned by the lack of research around the long-term effects of the weapons’ use, particularly because those with psychological issues often had physical problems too.

Shit a brick…my word people are stupid.

They aren’t being targeted and  tasered because they are mentally unwell…they are committing crimes and failing to respond to reasonable requests to desist from those activities which leaves the Police with no option other than to taser them.

The alternatives are a batoning, a punch in the head, or indeed a 9mm Glock.

You be the judge of what would be your choice for a violent interaction with Police.

Glock 9mm

and Taser

The Glock will have people dead…and the Taser…well not so much.

I suggest they replace the Taser with the Remington 870 shotgun, maybe then the coppers might get some respect for their lawful commands from the rock apes in the street.

Hell, I have depression myself, and I would *fully expect* to be tasered if I were doing something stupid like running around shouting and waving (say) an axe around.

I have *never* heard of anyone getting tasered who didn’t bloody deserve it.

The Taser is the best thing to happen in policing here in the last 50 years. Only leftie dickheads whine about it.

      Better then any of the altenatives;
      Pepper spray,
      Dog bites,
      9mm hollow point.
Much rather get told by 50,000volts to stop what what i was doing, then any of the above.

      • Rodger T

        Than, ffs the word is t h A n.

        • Honcho

I do not care, nor do I teach children to spell so neither should you.

          • Rodger T

Cool, like they say “ignorance is bliss”.

Use a comma to seperate the quotation from the rest of the sentence. And, the full-stop should be within the quotation marks. E.g. Like they say, “ignorance is bliss.”

You are never to young to learn. : )

my daugters got a good line. she’s used it a couple of times. ‘on the ground or you’ll get 50,000 volts up you’

The Huff. Post says lead causes violent crime, tho` it also stops it,when ingested at supersonic speeds.

  • Richard McGrath

The Taser is probably a lot safer then most of the psychotropic medication used in treating the “mentally ill”.

  • JC

I dont know what the ruckus is about. Electroconvulsive therapy is still used legally in NZ on people with appropriate mental conditions.. and tasering someone who is dangerous seems an appropriate street therapy!

  • williamabong

Sorry Judi we promise not to tase your nutters, we are just going to shoot them in future, that should make you happy, airhead.

  • Sym Gardiner

A Taser has a better outcome than a Glock. However there are a small number of situations where the consequences of a Taser are disproportionate. I think this is what these guys are hinting at. However Police really can’t personalise their response in the heat of the moment.

  • Dave

Simple fix, give the cops all guns, good training in how to hit their targets, make them almost immune from prosecution and then the incidents of people with a mental illness being tasered will correct themselves over time, as will the numbers of mentally ill committing violent crime etc.

you’re a good man dave. many a true word said in jest

Not to mention the savings in judges, juries, lawyers, jail, and all.

I could be very un-pc and think of it as unscheduled ECT therapy?

These people who complain about the dangers of tasers are morons, if the cop tells you to stop and get on the ground, do so and there isn’t an issue. they can’t abuse the tasers as they have cameras on them and every incident is investigated. I would rather be tasered than shot. It is always the safety of the offender that seems to be the most important factor, Lets give the cops and prison service what they need to do their jobs

    • Economist

Yeah – but NZ’s 3,000,000-odd law abiding citizens would rather crims were shot than tasered – not to mention NZ’s 100,000-odd Nett Taxpayers would who end up paying for all of ’em.

I was initially fairly sceptical about cops being issued with Tasers. However, they’ve proven themselves to be rather well behaved with their use and so I am happy with the outcome. The device seems to be fairly effective, too. I have a cop cousin who said he’s drawn the Taser a few times but never needed to use it because people start to cooperate when they see the red dot pointing at them.
