Shearer on the convention centre, does he even know anything?

So David Shearer reckons that;

“I object to the deal because, frankly, it’s building a convention centre on the backs of problem gamblers. It’s ultimately pulling money out of people’s pockets because they’re gambling and putting it into a convention centre. I think we could be above that in New Zealand.”

Does he know where local sports clubs and community groups get their funding from?

Pokies and Lotto funding is where.

What’s he saying?

That NZ should get rid of this¬†funding mechanism because the sports clubs and community groups are “pulling money out of people’s pockets because they are gambling and putting into” the local sports club or community group?

The man is a stumbling, bumbling idiot.

Gambling is simply a tax on stupidity…long may it continue.

  • Chris Hipkins was on Newstalk ZB saying Labour supported it.

So once again there is confusion between the leader and his followers. These public conflicting statements show clearly that the followers aren’t taking their direction from Shearer. I wonder who is now going to advise Shearer on what he should have said? Grant?

Trying to legislate against stupidity is stupidity in itself. Bradford succeeded once in getting some legislation across the line… But in reality… How many innocent children have died by violent means since then? And how many successful prosecutions?

What the left are saying is that they don’t think people are smart enough to manage their own finances… And this is obviously correct with their voter base…. But to try and bring everyone down to the lowest common denominator and dumb down society or someone’s ability to spend their money and leisure time as they see fit, is a really scary thought. Joseph Stalin might approve, but the rest of us give the left a big, 1finger salute.

Maybe the left should just start telling those with problem gambling issues to seek help and take personal responsibility, because their time would be much more effective focusing on the few with the problems, rather than trying to stop the entire country doing as they please, simply because a few people can’t, don’t and won’t accept personal responsibility for their own actions.

    • In Vino Veritas

bloke, Helen Clark and her Government for 9 years tried to legislate for peoples stupidity. An you are abolutely correct in saying that the left don’t believe that their constituents are intelligent enough to be responsible, and that they need to be baby sat through their lives. A good post bloke.

I don’t understand how this is a bad thing…When you think of Auckland, THE iconic view is the Sky Tower. Its in every photo & video pan of the city that exists just about. You cant have it one way and the other.

  • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

My understanding is Sheep will outlaw gambling in NZ when he becomes PM in 2014. This will be part of his support agreement with Greens. Take that Tories.

  • dianne65

David Shearer, The man is a stumbling, bumbling idiot. Agree with your comment 100%.

  • GregM

Forty years ago Muldoon said of Labour ” You don’t govern the country with a gentle smile, you govern it in the house with policy, and they don’t have any policy”.
    Nothing’s changed then.

  • Salacious T Crumb

Another diffident and expedient soundbite from Shearer. Does it not occur to him that the “problem” gamblers they refer to are a minority so the centre is in effect built off the back of the responsible ones?
It is also blatant hypocrisy to state “they are pulling money out of peoples pockets to fund…” – afterall isnt that what governments do?

    • Morrissey

“Responsible gamblers”? At the Casino? Are you on drugs? If so, did you buy them in the Casino car park?

      • blokeintakapuna

Not everybody that gambles, gambles compulsively until all their money runs out. Most have personal responsibility.

        • Morrissey

You go to a casino till your money runs out, you are not being responsible.

          • blokeintakapuna

Exactly. But most people that go to a casino don’t keep betting until all their money runs out. Most have enough responsibility not to do so. It’s only a tiny minority that don’t have self control… So why the hell should everyone be penalised because of a few that can’t control themselves?

          • Hazards001

Because that’s what the left do…they legislate against personal responsibility and let people like Morrissey tell the rest of us how to live and spend our money.

          • Morrissey

I don’t care if you throw your money away. You want to see someone telling the rest of us how to spend money, have a look at the government’s vindictive measures against poor people.

          • Hazards001

Are you talking about the poor people that live on other peoples money or the poor people that are forced to handover a disproportionate amount of their own money to people that won’t work or won’t work hard?

          • Hazards001

Because son..I am f..n poor. And I have to pay the top tax rate so people who choose to breed like rabbits and work as little as possible if at all can have all the things they like courtesty of the likes of you while I have nothing despite working 70 hrs a week.
Fuck your poor people! If they don’t like being told how to spend my money they can fucking well go out and earn their own!

  • tarkwin

Why would anyone expect Shearer to understand how community groups get funding? Let’s face it, he’s never had a real job and would have no understanding of economics. Apart from that, being a socialist he thinks money comes off the tree down the back.

  • parorchestia

The Convention Centre will be brilliant for Auckland – and it is much needed. It will also be great for NZ as a whole. And we get it for nothing! Fantastic!
Sure a few people will gamble irresponsibly, but if they didn’t have pokies they would back horses or some other form of gambling.
Labour has to ponder the morality of letting a few irresponsible gamblers determine the law for the vast majority of us who enjoy an occasional flutter and a meal out.
National has to make sure every voter knows what a vote for Labour means in terms of restrictions on personal liberty and financial irresponsibility – they would spend tax payers’ money on the Convention Centre and would wreck the finances of charities around NZ.

  • tarkwin

I gamble irresponsibly most weekends, that’s because I don’t read the form guides and end up betting on three legged horses or taking easy bets. Never touch the pokies – the missus has the odd bash and seems to come out O.K. It’s fine if you can afford it, but the decision can only be made by you. Know your limits or don’t do it. Or I suppose you could always ring Mr Shearer for a bit of fatherly advice.

    • Hazards001

Yup. I too like to follow the horses…trouble is the horses I like to follow like to follow other horses.

  • Patrick

More Nanny knows best – Labour have learnt nothing from 9 years of Clarke. The voters hated being told that Labour knew what was best for them & how to run their lives.
