Don’t f*ck with Melissa Bachman

Melissa Bachman is awesome, and probably has more balls than most men. Here’s why:

Melissa Bachman isn’t just another pretty face in camouflage, put in front of the video camera to move the TV ratings needle. Yeah, she’s a good-looking lady, but more than that, she’s a hunter, spending 140 days or more afield every year.

Bachman was raised in a hard-working small-town family that lived for hunting season. She and her family spent countless hours together in their duck and deer blinds in central Minnesota, and so she grew up immersed in the adrenaline and excitement that comes with good hunting.

As an adult, she set her sights on a career in the hunting industry. But Bachman didn’t just settle on one job. She busted her butt to learn three key skills: filming TV, producing TV and hosting TV. She can do it all––a legitimate triple talent: camera woman, producer and on-screen personality. – realtree.com

Hardly a charging bear as per the title, more like an inquisitive bear that was standing still when it was shot. Shame that she thinks it is such a beautiful animal that it is worth shooting as a trophy.

    • LabTested

Standing still when it was shot! Of course you wait till it stands still if possible. Better shot. Better chance of a clean kill. This is just good technique. Have you ever hunted?

      • empire32

Do any of you actually read the thread? Like Ive repeatedly said, my point here is that unlike what the title states, the bear wasn’t charging! Yes Ive hunted, I know when and how to shoot a clean kill. What I don’t do is make out that the animal was about to bowl me over and it was self defence!

    • Travis Poulson

Most large game IS shot while standing still. Good grief.

  • JeffDaRef

I’m not a treehugger in the slightest but I found that a little bit gratuitous.
Looked to me like the bear was more “curious/investigative” than “charging”.

    • LabTested

Yes. She called it in, which is a skill in itself.

Range of a bow kill is up to 30 meters. Sit & imagine calling in a bear when it thinks you are its dinner

      • JeffDaRef

I’m no bear whisperer but it seemed more “what the fuck is that noise” than “yum, I hear some dinner”…
The shot itself took a shitload of skill, granted – and that is probably the one commendable highlight of the clip – but I would have been just as impressed if she’d smoked a rabbit, possum, pig, deer etc.

  • Yeah, it takes balls to lure a bear quietly standing on the side of a lake with some kind of trickery, and then ambush and kill it. Next time someone gets chomped by a bear in Alaska I will blame this woman for starting the war.

    • Agent BallSack

Bear hunting is legal as is duck hunting. Next time you’re attacked by killer ducks blame the pacifists.

    • toby_toby

“Starting the war”? Are you serious? Do you think she’s the first person in history to kill a black bear? Do you think the bears are coming for revenge?

    • Like to see you do it…the bear has all the advantages if you are tits at shooting…she missed with the arrow she was beer food

    • That bear won’t be spreading the message, and last time i checked bears don’t watch youtube

  • nzd.gbp

I can appreciate the adrenaline and the sport of it, but if you aren’t going to eat it then why shoot it? Why not take a photo or something? Killing a beautiful animal like that for the thrill of it takes a certain type of character.
(Unless she was taking part in a state approved culling program or something like that.)

  • What a self centred cow. That bear was not charging but was provoked to its senseless death all for the titilation of a TV audience.

    • What are you a fucking hippy?

      • empire32

Pretty sure you can be against killing animals for the sake of it and not be a “hippy”

        • toby_toby

So you’re against all forms of hunting?

          • empire32

Not at all, as per my post further down. First consideration is that any kill is clean and humane, which most hunters would want. Second consideration is that the population can withstand the loss, eg protected species. Again most hunters are for this as they want to be able to hunt in the future. Third consideration is that there is a need, i.e. population control. I dont necessarily have an issue with hunting bears if the numbers need to be controlled. My issue with the video is that the title made out that she was in some danger from the start. If she hadn’t started calling I doubt that it would have gone anywhere near her. Secondly she highlights the beauty of the animal. If she was so interested in its beauty perhaps killing it isnt the best option?

          • toby_toby

You can mount a photo but you can’t stuff it nor eat its insides.

American Black Bear is of Least Concern:

“It is the continent’s smallest and most widely distributed bear species. Black bears are omnivores with their diets varying greatly depending on season and location. They typically live in largely forested areas, but do leave forests in search of food. Sometimes they become attracted to human communities because of the immediate availability of food. The American black bear is the world’s most common bear species. It is listed by the IUCN as Least Concern, due to the species’ widespread distribution and a large global population estimated to be twice that of all other bear species combined.”

          • unsol

She didn’t do this for population control, she did it to secure ratings.

I couldn’t bare to watch the video – took my cue from the reaction of other commentators. I personally can’t bare to watch or participate in any hunting these days…..not even fishing! I am that soft thanks to 15 years of urban living! And yet I was the girl who helped Dad pull rotten calves out from it’s Mum.

But that doesn’t mean I cant still see the value in hunting – hate 1080, much prefer hunters re our possums.

But this lady – it seemed senseless. She’s beautiful, skilled & clever, but showed a lack of character generally only seen in men by luring in bear in just so she could kill it for a TV audience.

          • unsol

            Completely agree.

    • unsol

      Completely agree.

  • toby_toby

So you hippies say the same thing about hunting deer or wild pigs? Poor deer, it was just minding its own business when it got lured with trickery and then ambushed? Please. It’s legitimate hunting.

    • Poor cow was just minding its business eating grass…spare me

    • nzd.gbp

toby_toby – I bet you’re the kind of guy who gets all horny when you shoot something. YEAH!! fist pump!! FUK YEAH EAT THAT SHIT FUKEN DEER!!! WHO’S THE BITCH NOW YOU FUKEN DEER PIECE OF SHIT!!!!

The deer’s like, hi jesus, what happened? and jesus say’s, some dickhead just killed you but don’t worry, you’re delicious and he really got his rocks off doing it and the deer goes, ok cool, as long as he gets his rocks off and doesn’t go harrassing the laydees. we don’t want that dickhead to breed.

      • toby_toby

Wow, what a numpty you are.

        • nzd.gbp

we’d probably be mates in real life.

          • toby_toby

Nah, you sound like you’d be better of over at the standard.

          • nzd.gbp

They’re a bit too sensitive over there. I wouldn’t last.

      • Travis Poulson

That was a lovely little story you came up with. Almost as though it was inspired by some chemical additives.

    • BJ

Disclaimer: I am no ‘hippy’ or ‘greeny’ Just some info – in Buddhism – which provides a good approach to life – says the human butcher of lower order animals will get their comeuppance in so far, in their next life they will come back as something very low in the pecking order like a daddylonglegs or cockroach

      • LabTested

Except of course in Tibet where Buddhists eat meat

        • BJ

It is the slaughterer that is in bigger trouble than the meat eater

      • toby_toby

That sounds pretty hippy to me.

  • LionKing

What a rug that bear would make. Excellent stuff WO.

  • empire32

Jeez some of you guys can really fly off the handle!

Personally Im all for hunting for control of numbers, and you can maybe make an argument for that with the Black Bear. That said it is in a very different league when compared to NZ pigs which are an introduced feral species that damages the environment. Also very different to animals that are specifically bred for consumption.

I have no issue with how the bear was shot, it was clean and humane, but to claim that it was charging at her in order to make out that she was in danger is rubbish. She had to entice the bear to her as it was perfectly happy doing its own thing! If she really thought it was such a beautiful animal she would have been happy with taking photos, or even getting involved in support programs involving darting if she wanted to get physically next to one.

    • toby_toby

So she had to entice the animal into shooting range… so fucking what?

      • empire32

The point there is around the title of the video. The bear wasn’t charging her, it was slowly walking towards an unusual noise. I have no issue with calling animals for hunting, but don’t make it out to be more than it is.

        • toby_toby

Newsflash bro: nobody here gives a flying fuck about the exaggerated language used by some person who uploaded a video to youtube. Everybody else is talking about the content of the video and you’re quibbling about the wording? Wow.

          • empire32

Nobody except the people discussing it with me. If you’re not interested don’t comment. Simple.

          • toby_toby

I don’t see anybody taking your side, hippy.

          • empire32

I didn’t say that they were, though in fact some are. Well done on putting forward such a well reasoned argument though.

          • Travis Poulson

Exactly! What a bunch of whiny bitches eh?

    • LabTested

She did not `entice it` she called it in to her. She made it think dinner was there. And.. She was on the ground, which is not necessary for bow hunting.

      • empire32

        Ah, thats what entice means.

    • Travis Poulson

Hardly worth getting ones knickers in a twist over the title of a damn youtube clip is it.

  • Andrewj

Shooting a black bear is like killing a house cow.

    • Travis Poulson

Exactly like killing a house cow, and just like a house cow you’d walk up to it and give it a pat on the head and a scratch under the chin.

      • Andrewj

you are confusing Balks with grizzly. I live in black bear country and they are not dangerous.

        • Andrewj

I had a friend who was in Alaska hunting for some meat when a grizzly started circling him. He ended up having to get a head shot it, he didn’t have a tag but not a lot of choice it was him or the bear. He had a bolt action .243 with deer projectiles, was worried about being under gunned, especially as he only has one arm due a previous hunting accident.

When I lived in Alberta I ignored Black bears some of the local cow boys used to rope them, others used dogs.

I liked to watch them, and grew to like them. I am hoping to get back to Alberta for a bit of hunting this year, but I’m not going to shot a harmless black bear, or even a grizzly from a hide, it just isn’t my idea of hunting.

This woman is a publicity hound.

We have some big Cougars around here, I mean really big.

          http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2008/11/06/supersize-cougars/

          • Travis Poulson

” but I’m not going to shot a harmless black bear,”

So you’ve made up your own mind you don’t want to shoot at bear, but I’m not sure how it’s relevant as to whether it’s harmless or not. If if went by that argument here, every single hunter in NZ would have nothing to do.

          • Andrewj

I think you are missing my point. I consider it unsportsmanlike like to shoot Black bear. I, and many of my friends feel the same way.

          • Travis Poulson

I’d consider hunting a bear with a bow to be alot more sportsmanlike than with a rifle. More difficult to place the shot, easier to give yourself away getting into a firing position, and a much closer range required to to get the shot away. But then we don’t have bears here anyway, so it’s probably pointless on my part to argue about ;)

          • Andrewj

I hate bows as they wound to much. i think of black bears as harmless. So whats the point, you going to eat it? You can shoot one of my old bulls on the farm if you wish, should be as much fun. I will shut you in the pen together so you will be nice and close for the fatal shot from your bow.

          • Travis Poulson

You’re making an assumption that I have a bow. You’re also digressing. You think of Black Bears as harmless, well good for you. So are deer, goats, ducks, rabbits, turkey, quail, pheasants…..

Is that what you judge your prey on, its ability to cause you harm? good grief. You’re better off taking up shark hunting.

Or have you been emotionally compromised by the cuddly look with those piercing eyes?

          • Andrewj

For gods sake who are you, leave me alone. Stalker!

jokes aside, there are lots of rabbits about same with deer, ducks etc. I have just got to an age where i like to see a black bear, on a hill side looking for grubs etc. I like them, consider them harmless, they run away if they see me.

Shooters that do are like those guys who drive around town in big 4x4s but never actually use them, yes I have touched a live black bear. I don’t want to stop people shooting them, in paces like Minnesota its a big deal. I still hunt but just for food and the odd coyote at a decent range. I let people onto my farm to shot rabbits, ducks wild cats etc.
You have to see the bird migration over here to believe it. they have literally millions of birds. I’m trying to find a spare corn crop and see if I can get some mates from NZ to come over next year. I’ve got a friend who wants to shoot a grizzly with black powder, now that takes balls, one shot that’s it. I think he should pack a decent pistol, has to be black powder though.

          • Travis Poulson

“For gods sake who are you, leave me alone. Stalker!”

You realize you’re responding to me too, right?

Heh anyways shooting a bear doesn’t appeal to me personally, neither does the style of shooting that seems to be pretty popular in the US (I won’t call it hunting) of sitting up in a tree waiting for something to walk past.

Grizzly with black powder….no thanks. I’d rather take my chances running across 8 lanes of traffic on a Monday morning!

          • Andrewj

Sitting up a tree would be too much work for the guys around here. It has to be from a truck or from a quad, no exceptions. Walk a few miles and its virgin territory and stunningly beautiful and you don’t have to bust your gut like in NZ. the problem is a few miles off the the animals stop being scarred of you. That is everything except the bloody skunks, one of whom has died close to our house.

  • A/random/reader

    Lame.

If you’re going to post hunting videos, please post something that is actually worth watching.

That video was about as boring as a trip to the freezing works.

    • LabTested

And you would have the balls to hunt bear?

  • LabTested

I Bow hunt deer every year in Canada. It can be a lot of work to bring them in. Kill zone about 15 meters. Normally you are up a tree. Even with a clean kill shot they can run 20 meters before they know they are dead.

Shooting from the ground while calling a bear into you (telling it you are food) well she has got huge balls

  • Dave

Hmmm If the series is on Tele, please let me know, I find her more attractive than the average hunter.

    • Travis Poulson

Might be able to find it online.

  • Claudia Van Day

The research on hunting is quite clear. People who hunt are 15 times more likely to engage in violent behaviour against humans, because they lack empathy and emotional maturity. In short, if you’re child kills sparrows, they’re unlikely to grow up to be vets.

    • LabTested

Quote source please. Otherwise your research is just made up.

    • nzd.gbp

And vegans are 1.27 million times more annoying than any other earth cult.

    • Travis Poulson

lol. I can’t help but laugh. Your comment is just hilarious. Oh, and the irony of it. Like Nikola Toki, hugger of birds, snails etc and she talks about busting possums…..

  • PlanetOrphan

Freakin good shot, dropped it with one arrow, impressive.

  • Bunswalla

I also have a quibble with the title of this post: Don’t F*ck with Melissa Bachman. I would like to ignore that instruction, in fact I’d like to do the exact opposite.

  • Get a grip

What is missing is what is behind the camera!
ie the crew…camera man, sound dude, hunter(s) with guns???
ITS JUST TV!!! and we all know about how TV scenes are sometimes titillated, dare I say a bit faked….
Guess the editor decided to call it a charging bear rather than a confused bear pottering over to investigate a distressed bear call!!!
“She called it over” – give me a ferkin break…
Its all about ratings and excitement.
Dont let the facts get in the way of a good bit of TV and the Whale using a catchy headline.

  • Greg

All hunters are like” what a beautiful animal, think I’ll kill it”

  • A brave women and a great shot. Gorgeous too!

  • grumpy

Gratuitous crap. Might as well have been a pet bear at the zoo. Hope she feels good about it.
