February 2013 Blog Rankings

Open Parachute has released the latest blog stats.

Once again I have to thank my loyal and growing army of readers… without you all I couldn’t do what I do.

Also thanks to Petal and Travis, plus the other support crew who try to keep me sane… I appreciate all your efforts.

Comments have significantly increased and Petal and Travis are also doing a great job on moderating that snarling nest of vipers.

Here are the numbers:

I’m quite humbled at the way my audience has increased this month.  It’s interesting to compare January with February

  • Bunswalla

    You’re welcome

  • GregM

Top work team. It was a short month too.

  • Joe Bloggs

    Very nice – well done

  • rouppe

Maybe the increase is due to the Herald-esque “page-fold” technique of forcing everyone to click twice to read one story

    • Yeah, we had that mentioned last month as well. The thing is, an extra 120,000 visits doesn’t explain the “page-fold” technique. But haters be hatin’, there’s not a lot to be done about that.

      • rouppe

Yes there is. Stop the page fold. It’s really annoying.

It’s surprising you use it given your hatred of the Herald, and even they don’t do it anymore. It’s only a recent change. Maybe you could do a poll.

Oh, and I’m not a hater. Quite the opposite. Making that sort of uninformed assertion is very Red Alert, and Standard-esque. This blog is risking becoming the right wing equivalent of those. I counsel care…

        • As I said elsewhere: It would be nice for someone to recognise the blog is growing because it’s attracting more readers. And it is attracting more readers because it’s putting out material they like to read.

          • Lopsy

rouppe , you must allow people to speak. Some may be a bit rough but we all vote. The other side give us no points for gentility so fuck it I say. It’s about ideas and we throw them around. Any “keeper” will be kept. At least no Clarkian can filter our thoughts.

  • Agent BallSack

Grats Whale, team and loyal Army. Still the best blog in the country long may it reign.

  • Steve (North Shore)

    This place is awesome

  • cows4me

Substandard still way to high for my liking.

    • Mr_Blobby

Yes Interesting, with a blog like the standard every month a third are arriving, a third are being banned, and a third are being banned next month they just don’t know it.

  • Andy

Well done Cam. I enjoy watching you point that “frikken laser beam” at all and sundry

  • Thanks so much Petal and Travis and everyone else who helps :) You have made such a difference. I really appreciate you all keeping WO sane since I have to live with him. Salute!

  • DoctorEvo

Firstly, congratulations on the milestone :-) But, I can’t help but wonder how much of the increase is on account of the move to abbreviated stories on the home page, each requiring a click-through to complete reading?

    • Wonder no more!

If you check the (public) “pageviews per visit” stat, you can see it’s really not as significant as the detractors would like people to believe it is. If you check “visits” for Feb, and “visits” for Jan, then pageviews don’t even come into that. That’s a cool 120,000 visits more than last month, for a total of 550 thou. No page view trickery there Doc.

A lot of traffic comes directly from Twitter and Facebook, which go to the full article. No double pageview there. And then a lot of people, once clicked into the first article, move directly to the next, and the next – again no double page views due to abbreviated stories there.

The article stubs have made the front page a lot nicer to navigate, quicker to load, and allowed us to tighten up on other features and introduce Hot/Must Read as well as Yesterday’s Posts. Yesterday’s Posts are, once again, not attracting double clicks, not the list on Today’s Posts.

However. We’ll have this talk again when we look back on March.

It would be nice for someone to recognise the blog is growing because it’s attracting more readers. And it is attracting more readers because it’s putting out material they like to read.

But that’s wishful thinking on my part :)

      • LabTested

The shorter front page articles creates a problem when viewing from Samsung Galaxy S2. 90% of the time the page freezes when clicking through to the expanded article – ie the page flicks over but then freezes

        • Travis Poulson

Time for that Galaxy Note II

      • Hi Petal et al, Congrats, and thanks for answering the double-click issue, I would have assumed the same re page views. Didn’t like it at first, but have got used to it okay. Really enjoying the variety of posts, even if I don’t agree with them all. Particularly appreciate the ones with original content rather than ‘here’s someone else’s post’ with a line added. The Must Read is a great feature. Yesterday’s Posts is useful. The Facebook link is handy too as I can keep up with latest posts, without coming back to WO and refreshing. Course I should really be working… :-) Totally appreciate the amount of effort you guys go to, to scour the net for stuff. Thanks for the distraction!

  • Pissedoffyouth

Good job, it took some getting used to but the smaller front page articles makes it a ton easier to browse. Especially going through older archives that aren’t on the left hand panel for today and yesterday (which is what I normally use)

  • Travis Poulson

Suppose I better get off my arse and get back to work, was tough taking a holiday on behalf of the team though.

    • Who are you again?

      • Travis Poulson

Whatever, you had your turn :)

  • pukakidon

Good work Cam, always a good place to hear both sides of the story. Allowing people to have an opinion either way is what makes the site so much better than the other leftist “only allow their point of view” Nazis at the other sites get their way.

  • steve and monique

The shit always sinks to the bottom and The cream stays on the top.Keep up the good work Cam (and crew),you are the best.

  • Lopsy

No biggie really Whale (Lol, play on words……nevermind) It’s because you are FREE. No mentally hobbled subbie, no self appointed Kim Il Forevermore. We say what we feel we need to say. Those that don’t like you are standing on the platform long after the train has left. Keep it up dog.

  • LesleyNZ

Thank you. Can’t imagine not having the daily dose of Whaleoil.

  • Troy

Yay Cam… fantastic and an indictment on how this blog contributes to in heaps of ways to what goes on in NZ.

  • RightOfGenghis

Congrats big guy. Please lay off farmers and non-lycra wearing bike riders who commute to work in the rain ;) BTW thanks Mr Key for the subsidies, it’s bloody dry up here!
