Fiji releases draft constitution

The Fijian government has released the draft constitution:

The Prime Minister has invited all Fijians to participate in the formulation of Fijis new constitution by providing their feedback on the draft document.

Fijians are urged to read it, discuss it, and debate it. We want to know what you think. To provide us with your feedback via Facebook, go to the Constitution tab and add your comments.

Despite the best efforts of Australia and New Zealand Fiji is making good progress towards their first truly democratic elections. Parliament will consist of 45 members as opposed to 71 previously and no upper house of unelected hereditary iTaukei Christian chiefs. They have also included a fairly decent bill of rights.

Great constitution. It is probably 1 million times better than the constitution the maori/racist party and their rigged constitutional advisory panel plan to foist upon our poor country!

    • spollyike

I strongly recommend anyone who is interested in the future contitutional arrangements in our country to read Twisting the Treaty, a book about raciast privilege and apology gone too far.

  • StupidDisqus

It is certainly more democratic than NZ’s constitution today.

Although it really entrenches socialism: clauses 10, 13, 14, 19, and most of 28-42 have no place in a constitution.

    Worse: it entrenches Proportional Representation!

    • LesleyNZ

      Please explain in more detail.

      • StupidDisqus

What is there to explain? There are no such things as “rights” to avoid having to work, to be paid a minimum wage, to a *jury* trial, a right to be in a union (the US has no such “Right”), rights to “free”, taxpayer funded education from primary to tertiary, rights to choose to work (or to decline to work); to a minimum wage and public transport and taxpayer funded free housing and taxpayer funded free universal health care!

Really Lesley: I can only assume you were state educated and are unable to read.

        • LesleyNZ

No need to be so rude Stupid Disqus. I was interested to know where you were coming from and now I know. You are thinking from a NZ perspective. This is Fiji. Unless you have been to the Fiji and worked in the very poor areas and squatter areas you don’t understand Fiji. I was state educated and I can read and have taught many children to read.

          • StupidDisqus

Well then: you should know why enshrining communism in a constitution is an extremely bad idea.

Clause 38 bans smacking. In the constitution!

This is a document only a committed leftist could love.

  • island time

Its great to see that the number of MP’s is reducing rather than increasing

  • LesleyNZ

Wonder what Helen Clark thinks now? Maybe NZ could take a few “tips”‘ from this constitution. Fiji might well end up more democratic than us!

  • BJ

I backed Bainimarama when he lead the coup because of what he said he was committed too – he has not disappointed (me).

  • PlanetOrphan

It looks like a fairly standard document, as with all of them I think they need “In the name of Peace and Good Civilian Interaction” added somehow.
It outlines the “How” but not the “Why”

    • StupidDisqus

Standard. Since you can neither read nor think, I sure as fuck hope you cannot vote!

Do you really think rights to belong to trade unions, to strike, to welfare, to state healthcare, to free state education right up to university and beyond, to public transport and housing and food and water and and and should be in the constitution!.

Even Eastern European countries never went so far — hell even Labour in NZ never managed to get such rights into NZ’s constitution in their wildest dreams.

Although if Cam supports this constitution, perhaps they will.

      • PlanetOrphan

I’m amazed you can read with your head shoved so far up your arse StupidDisqus.

Why don’t you run off and write your own constitution, deliver it to parliament, when you are finished, and demand those halfwits pull their heads out of your arse and adopt it immediately.

That’d make you the most famous HalfWit since John Key M8!

      • LesleyNZ

You are really getting all wound up. Calm down.

  • StupidDisqus

Do landlords have a right to their own property?

Can I throw bludging tenants into the gutter where they belong?

Or am I guilting of suborning the constitution — treason — if I do that

anyone who believes in property rights must hate this constitution.

  • StupidDisqus

Do you believe we must defend against muslim terrorists?

This constitution makes “discrimination” against muslims treason against the constitution?

Do you believe in the “Castle Doctrine” – the right to defend your house? or the right to “Stand you Ground” and defend your family against violence?

This constitution makes the castle doctrine and stand your ground laws unconstitutional treason

Still think this leftist panegyric is a good idea?
