Here comes the rain

There have been sporadic reports on Social Media today of people reporting some rain, only to update that status minutes later to say it’s all over.

I’ve been keeping an eye on Metservice’s rain radar, and over the last few hours yellow and blue stuff has been coming in.

It  looks like Taranaki and Nelson/Marlborough may get the first lot of rain.

At the moment the weather radar has a large blue blob over the ranch, it might be the dust storm passing by.

    • PM of NZ

Earlier in the day there was good yellow on the radar over Dannevegas, so went outside for a look. Nothing but high cloud and maybe some ice crystals melting/rain about 2Km up.

Problem with these ground based radars at Wgtn Airport is that 300Km out at max range, about 50 km out to sea past New Plymouth, the rain that is showing is 5Km or more above the ground due to the upward sloping bottom of radar beam. The actual rain below the beam is non-existent.

I’ll believe the rain radar when that blue band over Wanganui now (1915), puts water on my paddocks and in to my tanks hopefully in about 2 hours. Looks dark, still high cloud round these parts.

Radar are pretty fickle things PM. Our boat club installed a radar on the roof to pick up the local boats, this was about 15-20 years ago. Managed to pick up the mountain and ranges all right but they didn’t tend to move very fast. Boats had to carry radar reflectors but it was still pretty dodgy.

This is a better site, longer range weather go to 7 Day Forecasts.
