Only the Lonely (bet he was registered too)

Apparently ordering a hit on your principal isn’t quite as bad as stroking the thighs of three girls, but it is good to see the Teachers Council removing Alistair Martin Sands from the profession.

Do you like the picture for that article?  Or do you think it unfairly implicates any pool in this case?

Bit of a sad man, really

The Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal has now censured Sands and stripped him of his registration as a teacher.

The tribunal’s decision, which did not name Sands, noted the police summary of facts on his offending.

Police said Sands had been at the Queen Elizabeth II Park pool at the same time as about 50 schoolchildren on the afternoon of December 6, 2010.

He was wearing a rubber flotation tube when he entered the pool’s lazy river, which allows swimmers to float in a gentle current.

Sands passed three girls, aged 13 to 15, and reached out to deliberately stroke their thighs.

He did this to two victims twice – one of whom informed a life guard and a teacher.

When spoken to by police, Sands denied the touching had been deliberate, saying it had been a busy day at the pool and there had been a lot of bumping into people.

A very rare case where the Council has revoked the registration.  And they did it to a teacher that voluntarily removed himself from the profession.

I can’t help but wonder if the Council would have done the same if he was 32 and wanting to continue teaching.  On the scale of decisions, this really doesn’t stand out as the worst, and much more sever incidents have occurred where the Council allowed the teacher to remain in the classroom.

    The pool is deeply offended

Re the pool, I was wondering what those thin streams of white are in the photo, but on reflection I REALLY don’t want to know.

It says here he acknowledges he did/does experience attraction to pre-pubescent girls. I guess we ought to be thankful that when he succumbed to temptation it was in a public place and was acted upon fast. (http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/6037067/Touching-girls-at-pool-ends-music-teachers-career) I also agree with Zeb the pool should be offended……so should anyone who has to witness a 53year old man in togs and a flotation device.

    Catholic School?.

Does this mean a thigh-stroker was deregistered but the teacher who put a contract out on someone wasn’t?
