Imagine what a wonderful recreational lake this will make for the town when mining is finished. Win – win. Jobs and lifestyle improvement at project’s end.

      You ARE joking, right?

Is the second one Rossing Uranium in Namibia? My old man worked there in the 80’s. Was the biggest open-cast mine in the world at the time.

I presume the first one is the Martha Mine at Waihi. When complete it will indeed become a recreational lake.

The subsidences in 1999 & 2001 had nothing to do with the open pit though, rather they were due to old underground mine shafts collapsing (sink-hole subsidence, or crater collapse).
