A new Christchurch Cathedral [Poll]

The earthquake damage to the Christchurch Cathedral became the symbol for the event, narrowly edging out the CTV building collapse as one of the lasting images of the time.

This is because the Cathedral caused much debate about what to keep and what to throw away.

If you’re not from Christchurch, it isn’t necessarily easy to understand how much of their collective identity was damaged by the Cathedral collapse, although the subsequent arguments about what was to be done with this private building by public means was probably an indication.

I am going with restore, I have watched enough Grand Designs you can pull that shit off :D

    • Joe_Bloggs

And how many episodes of Grand designs have you seen where the project came in anywhere near budget? Grand Designs – subtitled Deep Pockets :-P

      • unsol

So true but man some of those restorations are amazing. Cant say I would ever be fan of that level of reno though. Re-doing a bathroom or kitchen takes up enough of your life let alone things along that scale.

      • Michael

very true, maybe they could preserve some aspect of it to speak to the story of the cathedral when rebuilding it as a new one. God, that sounded like Kevin McCloud wank! haha.

  • Gazzaw

As a temporary Cantabrian of six years and a regular visitor since that time I would like to see the Cathedral restored. The CBD is not and will never be the same without that familiar structure. It takes a Cantabrian to fully appreciate what that building means. I have no doubt that the ‘restore’ option will be outvoted but that will be due to Cantabrians only counting for a seventh of the population.

    • unsol

Very true. I voted gothic for fun, but prefer restoration. The Cathedral isn’t about religion in CHCH at all, it is a landmark, something only those from Canterbury can really appreciate. That & the surrounding square were the heart of the city. It was the centre piece for all big events. I was raised there & seeing the area over Christmas was devastating. No regent, no Square, no Hereford St, no Cashel Mall with the gardens & art centre hit hart….I am not sure how the city will climb back.

  • Still unsure as to who is paying? If it is Chch people paying for a Chch landmark, then they can rebuild whatever they like if they buy the land off the church. If it is the Anglican Church paying for a new place of worship then they can build any building that will suit their purpose.
I like the idea of the new looking Gothic design. It is written…”the old is gone, the new has come…”

    • Joe_Bloggs

I’m with you on the contemporary gothic design. For some reason it reminds me of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, not in scale or design, but in its reactionary approach – a new focus for a new city…

  • Lion_ess

None of them – why have a church as the centre piece for a city? Move on.

    • Gazzaw

Sure Lion-ess, they could have something classy like the Sky Tower.

      • unsol

That’s the thing isn’t it; has any city ever had a centre piece that held as much value as what the Cathedral & Square did for CHCH? Dunedin has an Octagon yet nothing there. Auckland – no real centre. The cloud I think is meant to be something along those lines but it doesn’t have that same community feel. And the Sky Tower – the epitome of gamblers who leave their kids in the car doesn’t even come close..same with Wellington & its bucket fountain.

        • a cathedral – a monument to the continued stupidity and superstition of a bunch of self-absorbed monkeys

garden city = put a park/garden there instead

          • Gazzaw

That’s purely your opinion NMR and I’m a non-believer too but it doesn’t give you the right to insult and demean anothers personal values.

          • why not?

god obviously wanted rid of the cathedral so rebuilding it will obviously make her madder

            mysterious ways indeed

          • unsol

Perhaps originally, but it became much more than that that is why believers & non believers alike love it. But clearly you have never lived there so what would you know and more to the point, why should you even get a say?

          • “But clearly you have never lived there so what would you know”

i lived in christchurch for 20 years

            continue

      • Lion_ess

Perhaps they should rebuild the city centre around the river – more along the lines of Melbourne.

        • Gazzaw

Good idea Lion-ess, the Avon is a real showpiece in that part of town.

  • LesleyNZ

Gothic is ugly. Restore or traditional is best.(similar design?).

    • Random66

      Agree.

  • Seeing as it’s a Church it should be traditional.

  • Teletubby

Prefer traditional but in the end he who pays the piper picks the tune

  • crigs

I voted for gothic. I like the different look. I feel that the old cathedral represents days gone by that really the earthquake has torn down. A new look for a new city appeals to me. I love that the rose window still appears to be incorporated in the design & the front lines of the cathedral echo the wings of the statue that stand nearby.

  • Michael

You can’t change history, you should celebrate it. A 21st century building reflects the history of the site far more than a restoration to how it looked before (kind of denying what happened).

  • 4077th

Why does it have to be a cathedral or some sort of religious sanctuary? Granted people need an icon of some sort, shape or form so why not be creative about it’s use? Most of those who knew the previous cathedral never put a foot through the door. It seems such a waste of an opportunity to build just another church.

    • James Gray

Yes, I think a 50 foot statue of thingee would be a much better option

  • PlanetOrphan

Traditional, mainly so the Landmark is still there.

  • no one it seems gives a shit about god anymore anyway. maybe it should be shaped like an x box and have a hat on it to get restore peoples FAITH.

Its called faith for a reason…..cos you gotta have faith.
