Dr Kermit Gosnell – a New Zealand media perspective

After highlighting the Dr Kermit Gosnell trial, and the strange situation where this most outrageous of trials was effectively being ignored by the media, one of our readers, LesleyNZ created a little project for herself:  She wanted to see if the NZ media would pick up the story now that it was being highlighted here and other widely read blogs world-wide.

Cam – Follow up to media black out of the Dr Kermit Gosnell trial. I have been doing a bit of research this morning to see whether our mainstream media have picked up on the US Dr Kermit Gosnell trial after your blog post the other day. Interesting results. Very little to none in NZ apart from your Whaleoil Blog. There is still a media blackout in NZ.

This is the latest about the US media blackout. Seems CNN has taken notice:

Look who’s discovered the Gosnell story – http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/look-whos-discovered-the-gosnell-story

CNN’s Anderson Cooper is only one of several mainstream media figures who have responded to Friday’s “Tweetfest” by covering the Gosnell story.”

That’s some work there Lesley, thanks.

The question remains:  Why is it that the media, both here and worldwide, refuse to touch this story?

In fact my post highlighting this genuinely outrageous story went pretty much ignored by our own commenters as well.

Is murdering babies just too much for us to handle?  Cannibal cops are ok?  Rapists are fine?  But somehow we can’t stand to think or talk about a man who has been in the business of killing 3rd term babies under the tenuous label of “abortion”?

  • Abortion!?!? I Gosnell just chopped up that poor boy in CHCH; he has been found guilty and I thought the media coverage was pretty good.
A low life will not be among decent people for the next couple of decades.

  • Oh I see – there are 2 Gosnell trials; right.

  • As far as comments from your readers, my reply is “What is there to say? Bad man, hope he gets what is coming to him!

    • I wonder if the lack of US reporting might be due to the violence that has been fueled by pro/anti abortionists. It may be that there is a desire, if not an understanding between journalists to keep abortion reporting under the radar?

    • We also know that NZ ‘journalists’ are just repeaters, so if the US doesn’t carry the story, then there is nothing to repeat.

  • Blair Mulholland

It’s a bit like when that fellow Mengele ruined the reputations of all the good Nazis out there. Just too embarrassing.

  • Justsayn

I suspect you don’t get comments on the topic because it is just too horrific.

I am pro-choice, but struggle to decide where I think the limits should be. Clearly this guy crossed anyone’s line (or rather it seems he has). I had a tear in my eye when I read your recent post on it. All I could think of was my kids when they took their first breath.

But I don’t think this case furthers the real discussion – surely what he is alleged to have done should be wrong. The real question rests in harder value judgments than this.

    • Yes, but why are the main stream media choosing to leave it alone, when normally they would be all over the gore and the grief?

      • Justsayn

I was focused on the why no comments here question.

The MSM are acting our of self-interest. Whether tat is because they see it as bad for ratings, or they are pro-choice, I don’t know. Might be a bit of both.

  • cows4me

No comments, it’s not politically correct. The pro choice advocates, usually left and their media sycophants like to put abortion in the best possible light, this is embarrassing and horrific at the same time. Abortion must be portrayed as a personal choice that effects only the woman, such is the world of these bullshit artists. To have doctors breaking the necks of babies struggling to survive, well it just isn’t cricket. But this is the world the more enlightened and progressive have brought us.

    • Justsayn

Since when has pro-choice been left? I thought that the preservation of personal choice is the core belief of the right! I think you are confusing left and right with religious beliefs / lack of them.

      • cows4me

“Personal choice is the core belief of the right ! ” , It is, where’s the baby’s choice ?

        • Justsayn

And then you start the mainly religious debate about the point at which a baby is a person.

          • cows4me

Fine Justsayn , when the baby is crying on the table it will take great comfort in the knowledge it is not a person, geeeessssss.

          • Justsayn

When your daughter commits suicide because you won’t let her abort the child of her rapist without being excommunicated from her family and church then I hope you take great comfort from praying about it, geeeesssss.

This is the answer to your questions Petal. Most of us just avoid the debate altogether as people like this Cow try to turn the debate into the baby killers verses the righteous.

          • cows4me

Did I say I was totally against abortion?
            Did I mention religion?
Did I claim to be “righteous” ?

          • Mostly_Harmless

Because most abortions take place in precisely those circumstances.

  • blokeintakapuna

A little off-topic, but this story perfectly demonstrates how most of the MSM can quickly collude to slant/angle any given story or topic… And proves their complicity with the coordinated, orchestrated “attacks on National/Key” as opposed to credibly reporting on any given story instead of trying to invent a story with blatently biased opinions served to those watching as “facts”

The school closures in Christchurch is a perfect example. For weeks we all heard from Campbell Live how Intermediate schools were being closed and the students needed to move at great disruption to their lives… But no mention that the schools needed closing because they were completely munted and school rolls had dropped so much in those munted areas that new schools were being built elsewhere, or that intermediate level kids move schools every few years anyway, or the $1Bn being spent in Christchurch building the 11 new schools…

What will the BSA do to curb the erosion of credible journalism in NZ in these instances and proven, blatantly biased MSM passing these shrilling propaganda pieces off as credible news?

Or is the BSA about as effective as the Companies Registrar is with ensuring unions comply annually with their financial disclosures?

    • BIT, the question behind the question is – who decides what runs and what doesn’t? There seems to be a guiding hand controlling what appears to be independent organisation to (more or less) sing off the same song sheet. It can’t all be explained by pack mentality, can it?

      • Justsayn

It probably is that simple – like a school of fish, each motivated by their own self-interest to sick together without the need for discussion about it.

There does seem a trend (baring something dramatic to change the usual cycle). New Govt gets elected. Media have new people to talk to about new things and that is enough to fill papers / appear insightful. The “like” dries up as does the newness, and the media turn to being anti Government because that is easy to do. Then media get personal about it and try to bite off the hand that once fed them so that they can be spoon fed by a new hand.

In a way, the public tend to go through a similar cycle – do the media simple reflect the public’s feeling or do the media lead the way and the public follow? There might be a Phd in that for someone.

      • blokeintakapuna

Exactly… Well there’s Murdoch who owns plenty of media… Then there’s…

  • LesleyNZ

This is further proof that NZ mainstream will only publicise what they want us to know. It is also proof that mainstream media organisations are run by reporters and journalists whose personal agenda and opinion controls what stories they personally want to cover. The organisation I am most disappointed with is NewstalkZB. They pride themselves on being the leader of news – their motto is “Keep up with NewstalkZB news”. Well they were the leader of news. Often they would break a story and half an hour later you would see it in the NZ Herald. NewstalkZB’s Leighton Smith has been discussing the Kermit Gosnell trial over this past and last week. Not once has the Kermit Gosnell trial been in the NewstalkZB news. What say you NewstalkZB?

Why has the NZ Herald joined the media blackout on the Kermit Gosnell trial? They published stories on the 19th and 20th of march – but no more since? Why? What say you NZ Herald?

Why has TV3 News and Stuff not continued to cover this story since the first on Jan 20, 2011. What say you TV3 news and Stuff?

What say you to all other NZ MSM/blogs? Why are you continuing with the media blackout of the Kermit Gosnell murder trial?

You covered the recent Christchurch Gosnell murder trial in great detail……………………

  • Justsayn

It is possible that they haven’t covered it because there are just too many fucked in the head stories coming out of the US for them to be covered (unless they involve some celebrity or other).

Has it received much coverage in the US? Euan say it hasn’t and if that is true it might just be too hard for our lot – they love to copy and paste. If it hasn’t then I guess you can ask a similar question about the US media (but I would have though it bread and butter for Fox).

    • LesleyNZ

The original post on this blog covered the US media blackout – NZ media is also doing the same. US media refuse to report on this trial. See the photo in the court room that Whale published – one lone reporter in the media section of the courtroom.
