I actually /Facepalmed when I saw that.

Here we have a Labour MP that doesn’t believe having a law pass by one vote is Democracy.

Was she asleep at the back of the chamber during Helen Clark’s sweaty grip on her tenuous 1 vote majority reign of terror?

I don’t remember Curran complaining about democracy needing more than 1 vote then, do you?

Even Labour supporter Giovanni gives her a slapping.

Again another example of why dumb arses need to stay away from Twitter. Cannot believe Labour let these people “tweet”. Okay you can delete a post but someone will see it and it will end up on WOBH or some other website. Looks just as bad if you delete it as you obviously rubbed one of your brain cells together and thought “Hang on maybe this is not such a good idea”.

    • SJ00

God I hope they keep using twitter forever, they can’t help it from making complete dicks of themselves and its only going to hurt them. Keep the gems coming Curran and crew.

  • Justsayn

If the medium is called Twitter, surely an individual post is a twit not a tweet?

    • rangitoto

No. The tweeter is the twit

      • Justsayn

Clearly the tweeter who tweets a twit to twitter so twits who tweet can twitter on tweeter about twits tweetering treats a twit with treats of tweets.

        • NotForTurning

“too many tweets makes a twat”

  • LesleyNZ

And if Clare Curran and her fellow MP’s pass the Gay Marriage bill what does that say about democracy? What a hypocrite! Clare – Helen Clark did not listen to the voice of the people.

    • TomTom

It has passed the last two readings with more than a one MP majority. Not even the same thing.

    • CJA

Classic example of that (from my recollection although I was overseas when it passed) was the smacking bill? Anyone recall the referendum result?

      • Apolonia

87.4% voted to get rid of the undemocratic law.

        ww.electionresults.govt.nz/2009_citizens_referendum/
More people signed the petition to force the referendum than voted to keep the stupid law.

“Passing by one vote” that is precisely what democracy is. It is the tyranny of the majority. It is 51% telling 49% how to live. Two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner.

I don’t think she would be too upset if Lab managed to cobble a coalition and win by one vote with Shearer having less than 20% preferred PM. MMP is possibly the worst form of democracy.

    • parorchestia

It’s better than having 49% tell 51% how to live. Boy, are you right about MMP.

  • Justsayn

Clare makes a good point that we should all contemplate before we next vote.

The problem with democracy is that only a very small proportion of people thought that Labour was the best. Clearly, the huge majority of voters were wrong, misled by the propaganda of the blue, the green, and the grey (and any other non-red colour).

If only we could “fix” democracy by always having Labour in power, the world would be a perfect place.

A place where spies work vigorously, and civil servants don’t. Where teachers teach, sometimes, and run everything else as well. A place of peace, and several major wars. A place of economic stability through collectivism, and a global financial crisis fed by greed. Ahhhhhh the serenity.

Clare, we love you just the way you are. Stay strong. Stay safe. Stay overseas.

    • NotForTurning

If we adopted real democracy no representation without taxation Labour would never be government.

If we were as zealous and protected freedom the way we protect the abused kids or even abused animals all Labourites, Greenies & Unionists would be in Gaol (or better still, Glocked)

      • Justsayn

Agree completely NFT! How dare the poor expect to vote, let alone live.

      • John Q Public

Don’t you mean “no taxation without representation”? We already have the other.

        • Bunswalla

To be fair, JQP, he hasn’t got the faintest fucking clue what he means.

        • NotForTurning

Nope. I mean no representation without nett taxation.

The franchise should be restricted to those who pay the taxes parliament will impose- just as it was in NZ when the country was founded. Say incomes of $200K or assets of $3M would seem about right.

      • Bunswalla

And if everybody knew how to make words bold using html you wouldn’t be able to get your points across by shouting, you fucking knob-end

  • Phar Lap

Yes same sort of theme written by the cub reporter Vance Andrea in the soon to be bankrupt Fairfax Newspapers. Is becoming more and more amateur how she blames John Key for the 2003 lack of safeguard legislation in the Lie-bour security GCSB legislation, massively supported by bully boy Grant “chucklehead” Robertson. whom she seems to be in bed with, and his Lie-bour cohorts.

  • AnonWgtn

Was Curran even in Parliament under Clark – was she not still in Australia then ?

  • tarkwin

The Labour idea of governing has more to do with Animal Farm than democracy. “Do as I say don’t do as I do” should be their catch cry.

  • Presumably drawing a massive salary to be MP for an electorate where 19000 didn’t vote for her is democracy?
Presumably winning Dunedin South by 1 vote would be VERRRRRY democratic haha

  • Lion_ess

Not so much a dumb tweet, more a dumb person who airs their thoughts on Twitter.

  • unsol

Good grief the woman really is an idiot!

No surprises that terms like democracy have such fluid meanings where the left wing are concerned.

  • cows4me

Yeah Clare you know all about democracy, bullshit artist. Is it democracy when parliament votes on a certain bill that should be voted on by the public democracy? I bet you are in favour of that “democracy”. Piss off you hollow, vacuous woman.

    • hazardsareonitsok

      Whats with the downvotes

      • NotForTurning

Referenda are the last tool of those two afraid to govern.

The problem with NZ is far to wide a franchise – not to narrow!

  • NotForTurning

Currant said “spy law which passes with one vote”

Klark’s spy law passed with rather more than one vote – National voted for it at least.

Perhaps ACT & Greenies voted against.

The problem is that Klarks electoral laws passed by one vote: and electoral laws have a lot more to do with NZ than a law which will give to the GCSB exactly the same powers the poiice & SIS already have — to spy on known or suspected terrorist with a warrant from the court.

  • Graeme Edgeler

Giovanni Tiso is most certainly not an Labour Party supporter.

  • Pissedoffyouth

Fuck she’s a dumb cunt, do you have to at least do a basic exam to get into parliament?

Claire stop dribbling on yourself and google Democracy

  • Richard McGrath

Democracy… aah. Like Labour winning the 2005 general election with support from just 33.2% of eligible voters. That sort of democracy, Clare?

29%
