Just two little four letter words, loaded with meaning

Kevin Hague blogs about the words both for and against marriage equality that he received in correspondence.

The debate over Louisa Wall’s marriage equality bill has been raging for almost a year now, and I have received thousands of emails and letters, as well as having read many thousands of submissions during the Select Committee process…

We looked for a graphic way of representing this contrast, and used a “sample” of all the correspondence that arrived in my office over a particular time to create word clouds. It’s not science. It’s not discourse analysis. But it makes the point.

Herald website is reporting today that the word ‘Bride’ will disappear from official forms. Have a think about this social engineering that means in order to give some groups equal rights, the right of a woman to be a ‘Bride’ has to be removed

    • Hollyfield

She will still be a bride.
All sorts of forms currently ask for name of spouse or partner, that doesn’t mean the people concerned cannot be husband or wife.

      • Rodger T

You are not going to get anywhere using Logic and Reason on this subject Hollyfield.
Didn`t you get the memo? ,the world is about to come to a screaming Faaaaabulous END!

    • Gazzaw

It’s a disgrace LT. The argument all along has been that traditional marriage would not be affected in any way. The rot is setting in already and the Bill has not even been passed.

      • Gayguy

        Bullshit.

For a start modern marriage is anything BUT what was traditional and second, the Herald is wrong as was pointed out in the House by many people.

It always amazes me that so many on here attack the Herald, and then as soon as it says something (even if it is factually wrong) that supports their view, the Herald is suddenly a worthy paper that prints only the truth.

    • Andrei

Yes and when this was pointed out as a consequence of this silly business the argument was mocked.

      • And it stil will be mocked. It is a piece of paper…a government form…which strangely you complained on another thread that the government was entering into and area it wasn’t already in…logic fail there Andrei…a bit like all of your arguments on this topic.

        • Andrei

The only reason why the Government got involved in marriage, my friend, is because of the children that generally result from that union.

There is no purpose in having Government involvement in other relationships, eg between golfing partners

    • RightOfGenghis

To borrow a quote from the dark side “You are not going to get anywhere using Logic and Reason on this subject”. My daughters will still be beautiful brides, wives and mothers and my sons in law the bridegrooms on their big day;)

    • It is a piece of paper…currently loaded with gender specific words…best to remove it because it becomes silly when spouses are of the same sex. Get over yourself

    • BJ

Just one point against GM is the fact that something cannot be an right issues if in pursuing that perceived right – it diminishes the rights of others. This is not currently a rights issue but will become one if things change

    • Gayguy

The herald is wrong. As stated in the house by many people on both sides of the floor.

  • Gazzaw

I am delighted to know that Hague and his staff have the time to be so creative with my tax dollars. I have two words for Hague – FUCK OFF.

    • unsol

And no doubt he has two words for you…in the words of Lily Allen FUCK YOU.

      • Gazzaw

        No thanks unsol.

And just who the fuck is Lily Allen? Somebody that I should be concerned about?

        • unsol

Oh don’t be coy, I bet he’s one of your ‘free passes’ :-)

          • Gazzaw

Sorry to disillusion you unsol but I’m quite normal. Arses are for sitting & shitting purposes only in my book. Boring eh?

          • unsol

Don’t be an idiot Gaz you are smarter than this – Cameron has posted her song on You Tube many times in relation to this topic.

But I guess that’s the problem with your side too isn’t it – always picking & choosing what arguments you decide to acknowledge & attempt to provide a retort for.

      • Gazzaw

        No thanks unsol.

And just who the fuck is Lily Allen? Somebody that I should be concerned about?

  • cows4me

Let me guess, his fucking side is love and those opposing this crap are in fear. Well wasn’t that a revelation, not. Just more one sided horseshit. Put it to the people Kevin, come on where’s all your love or is it you that live in fear, for fucks sake what shit.

    • williamabong

Perhaps the two words should be Love and Shit.

    • unsol

That’s the whole problem with your side & why you do get mocked, laughed at & ridiculed.

You write everything off as crap yet offer no opinions based on any facts.

Sadly Andrei & LM are the only ones who come close as their opinions are based on faith (as are others but they merely quote the bible) -and well, that should worry you.

Conversely you have to have been living under a rock or just incredibly stupid to see the countless comments on here from me, Ben Ross & odd random commentators who have laid out arguments against the common viewpoints that get expressed in these debates. Arguments against scaremongering (pedophilia/demise of society), religion, science, what is supposedly natural & a quick history 101 on where marriage has come from, why it was introduced & why it has had to evolve.

Personally I am just amazed how dogmatic stupidity & ignorance can be. There really is no reasoning with fools.

So yes the fear word cloud does apply to your side although given the responses I have seen on here I inclined to just replace it with Fuck You:

      • Bunswalla

What a complete logic fail – you state that “the closest that anyone who has no facts can come to having an opinion based on facts, is someone whose entire opinion is based on faith”?

        Really?

Personally. I’m just amazed at how unbelievably stupid you can be. There really is no reasoning with complete fuckwits.

        • unsol

And that Buns is case and point. Your comments against me may get the most likes, but remember your popularity is merely resultant from being in the company of fools

Andrei & Lucia have at least tried to substantiate their opinions based on their religious academia….not just the bible.

You have not tried to substantiate anything.

So I will give you the same homework I gave cows – give me 5 FACTS that quantify your position.

I shall check in with you tomorrow.

      • cows4me

No unsol my word is not fear it’s anger. I don’t fear gays you stupid woman I really could not give a shit how they live their lives . I’m pissed off that they try to claim the word married. They ain’t fucking married and all the thousands of words you post where you pretend to be some fucking cone head will make no difference, let the people decide, oh wait, sorry I did not realise you that your superior brain is way to advanced for us mere idiots.

        • unsol

So you now call me a stupid woman and a cone head, then go onto wail about how the gays are stealing a word you think belongs to you & echo the cry for a referendum which is likely to translate into far less voter participation than what is currently been exercised via emails etc to MPs (including by those who almost never turn out to vote – many Maori & PI).

I’d say stupidity is an adjective you are far too familiar with, perhaps because you have spent far too many years inhaling methane.

Time for a detox don’t you think?

        • Gayguy

Say that to a married queer couple after the law passes and see how much shit you get in.

    • Gayguy

Well, provide a non abusive, non fear based, non religious based, scientific rational argument as to how Marriage Equality will be a disaster for society.

      I am waiting.

      • Guest

        I agree.

      • Bunswalla

You’re just a pack of homos and it’s unnatural. There, I fixed it for you.

        • Gayguy

The only unnatural thing is your mind.

      • cows4me

        You are full of it

        • Gayguy

Yes, full of truth and facts. As opposed to the lies told by the anti marriage equality groups.

  • Redneck

If anyone out there is still deluded or in denial as to what homosexual “marriage” is really all about, look no further than the USA yesterday. The state of California is considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples.

“Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do
not produce a baby would be considered ‘infertile’ under the proposed
legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow
those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to
impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially
be covered by this new provision of California law.”

    http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/04/08/CA-legislation-insurance-gay-infertility

In a move that foreshadows the radical left’s plans for churches should gay marriage become the law of the land, the California legislature is moving to strip the Boy Scouts of America – a private organization – of its non-profit status for refusing to allow gay
    scoutmasters.

  • Pete George

Love – should any couple who love each other be able to get married, regardless of their sexual orientation?

Fear – fear of religious faith being challenged, fear of marriage
being devalued, fear of the end of society as we know it, fear of
    homosexuality?

    • BJ

      The graph means:

Love – the acceptance, valuing, respecting and embracing of the differences between man and woman that despite not ‘knowing’ the opposite gender they bravely face the world and seek knowledge of their individual selves as well as partners.

Fear – by LGBT of not feeling normalized in society because they know in their hearts they have fearfully turned away from their opposite gender. Fear of the self inflicted guilt because they are not prepared to ‘do the work’ on their complete sexual being as their concience has opted out – because its easy to get on and face the world with your same looking back at you.

      • Pete George

Your Fear lacks empathy or understanding of what it might be like to be homosexual. You seem to be trying to apply extreme guilt to people who don’t meet your standard of “normal”. That sort of ostracisation can have make life hell for some homosexuals.

Researchers have found that suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) youth is comparatively higher than among the general population. LGBT teens and young adults have one of the highest rates of suicide attempts.

Depression and drug use among LGBT people have both been shown to increase significantly after new laws that discriminate against gay people are passed.

Bullying of LGBT youth has been shown to be a contributing factor in many
suicides, even if not all of the attacks have been specifically
        addressing sexuality or gender.

        • BJ

You are wrong about what I said.

We all face fears in life and guilt is what one chooses to wear or project it onto others so you don’t have to deal with it. I am merely pointing out that those feelings belong to the individual and shouldn’t need society to make them feel ok from the outside in rather than needing themselves to work on it from the inside out.

Who is talking about new laws to ostracise – I’m talking about the acknowledgment and acceptance of differences in society but not having minority groups expecting society to alter remarkably to accommodate and pretend there is no differences

  • williamabong

Hauge is a fraud, he climbed on the Green ticket to get a seat in parliament, since he got there he has done fuck all but harp on to promote the fagot cause, I couldn’t care less if poofters want to get married, perhaps they deserve it.
The worst part of this whole poofter wedding debate is the bulk of the promotion of it has come from list scum who obviously have fuck all else to do but push their own little barrows.
As for Kevin he seems to have been selected by the Greens, but working for the Browns.

  • Andrei

Yes there is no real argument for gay “marriage” so silly little graphics are deployed to demonize opponents and make the proponents seem all sweetness and light.

We could just as easily produce a graphic using tw other four letter words

    GOOD

    EVIL

bur being far more intelligent than the same sex “marriage” crowd we don’t.

    • Rodger T

What you are really worried about is that you are running out of people to demonise, cos` once your religion has no one to hate ,you have no religion.

Honesty, Andrei, you should try it sometime.

      • I am inclined to agree it’s all a red herring – (Andrei undoubtedly goes to gay saunas regularly to be mass sodomised) – all they want is someone to hate; it’s good business for them.

        • BJ

I’d say trapped in a gay conciousness would cause someone to ‘Hate’ themselves and to seek out validation of their being ‘OK’ at all and any cost to society. Selfish, shortsighted and self gratifying

      • Gazzaw

So who is this dude Rodger that we should be paying heed to?

        • Rodger T

He`s just another political commentator stating the bleeding obvious.
Of course, you don`t have to be paying heed to his comments in a free society.

          • Gazzaw

OK. I just thought that he might be an expert on the subject. I note that he is on record that despite being an agnostic he has attacked Christianity & defended Islam so his attacks on the religious right is hardly surprising.

          • Gayguy

And that makes his point less valid how?

If you are going to use the Bible for hate, then you MUST follow ALL the rules. Not just the ones that make it easy for you to attack and condemn those you do not like.

Otherwise you are just picking and choosing, and your argument is nothing more than a joke and should be dismissed as such.

          • Gazzaw

You’re a busy boy tonight gayguy. I’m an atheist so your assumption about the Bible is totally irrelevant. I’m just stating the facts regarding Uygur’s views.

          • Gayguy

Fact is there is no reason to deny marriage equality.

            Well no real facts.

          • cows4me

Is that you gay guy ? at least he could put a tie on

    • unsol

Sadly Andrei your faith & your world view precludes such concepts as “real arguments”. After all it is you who is putting your bets on someone you have never met…who is in fact invisible. Tell me, was your friend as a kid called Casper?

    • Gayguy

So equality for all consenting adults before the law is not an acceptable argument for you?

Fine. I want different tax laws for me because I am gay, cannot make kids and there for have no need to pay taxes that support schools.

  • eager beaver

I’d swap LOVE for VILE or AIDS

    • Rodger T

Make sure your partner wears a condom then.

      • Gazzaw

        Does yours Rodge?

        • Rodger T

C`mon Gaz is that all you got? LoL. : )

          • Gazzaw

Sorry Rodger that’s the best I had.

    • Gayguy

Why? Because of your lack of tolerance? Your position of hate and ignorance? Because you are amazingly under educated about the STI rate among heterosexuals?

  • parorchestia

This ideogram reeks of propaganda worthy of the worst societies known to history. It reminds me of Stalinist posters. It could be so rearranged to convey exactly the opposite message if the authors so desired, so contains no real truth. Are we a democracy? If so, let’s settle the issue by letting the people decide through a binding referendum. Anyone denying this is antidemocratic.
