Who leads the Green Party – preliminary poll results

The poll is still running here, but the results are starting to settle out:

They say that perception is reality.  And for the Green Party at least, the reality of the above result is that Metiria Turei is perceived as a “PC” appendage.

The same poll on Rod Donald and Jeanette Fitzsimons would have seen a result much more in line with the Green Party’s original intentions of a truly shared power base.

No matter how much is being spent on the Turei make-overs and attempts to provide relevance through media appearances, the naked truth is that the Green Party is perceived to be run by Russel Norman.

  • She is a PC appendage – you don’t think she could get there on merit do you? haha!

    • This is her 3rd party. She has been in Mcgillicuddy Serious and Legalise Marijuana. Sounds like she wants power at any cost.

      • Bunswalla

Well she at least fills several of the quota positions – chick, brown and bat-shit crazy

  • Mr_Blobby

“the naked truth” have you foreseen something we haven’t. Feeling a bit squeeze now.

    • Joe_Bloggs

urgh! Please someone brain-wipe that thought from my head!

Turei is a true lightweight despite appearances – she’s still in Orcs and Elves gameplay mode, competing with some pretty shrewd gutter-rats when it comes to politics.

  • Sym Gardiner

I wonder if you under-value Metiria. As I see it they are quite a good team. Russell appeals to the mainstream voters – appearing to reasonable to anyone who doesn’t understand 4th Form economics or Form 1 maths (which lets face it is quite a few thanks to our ‘world class’ education system). And Metiria keeps the party faithful lead.
They play to their strengths generally. They should continue to do this. If they start playing the “pretty game” it firstly won’t work and secondly will appear hypocritical. The aura of sincerity is important for green politics.

All this said… I’d be pretty happy to see the Greens flame out. They would be terrible for this country if they got in.

    • In Vino Veritas

Turei will never be able to shake of the McGillicuddy Serious Party millstone. No less than no. 27 on their list for the 1999 election – thats 27, I guess Clan McGillicuddy knew more about her abilities that the Greens?

In fact, some of the Greens policies may have been knicked from the Serious Party – printing money is similar to abolishing it and replacing it with chocolate fish isn’t it? McGillicuddy’s employment policy was full unemployment – with the Greens policies around sustainable everything, this is the end outcome, so pretty much the same.

      • Phar Lap

Not forgetting she also had a go at the Aotea Marijuana Party as a candidate. Was a great day for her when she managed to rid the joke “green” party of her ugly sister.A big girl called Sue Bradford.

  • Grizz30

I think Russel appeals to the urban middle class and is perceived as a safe pair of hands. Metiria is there to appeal to smackheads and potheads to help beef up numbers on election day.

    • “is perceived as a safe pair of hands”

      * shudder *

    • williamabong

She’s there because she’s brown and has a vagina, no other reason, poor Russel must shudder every time she opens her mouth as to what sort of a brain fart is going come out next, safe hands – no, brain fart – YEP.

    • In Vino Veritas

Grizz, safe pair of hands if you consider a pair of hands that ends at the wrist.

  • Lion_ess

What is it with these Parties and their Co-Leaders – were they worried someone’s feelings might get hurt if they had one “Leader”. Now I see the maori party want to have 3 leaders – honestly, I think all their members should be leader – perhaps they could have a rotating leaders chair, so each one gets a turn. Childish shit if you ask me. I doubt Margaret Thatcher would have been a co-leader with anyone, nor any true leader for that matter who is worth their salt.

    • GregM

I suspect it is so more than one person can claim the “party leader salary” with all the perks and extras.

      • Steve R

I doubt we could use the word suspect at all. It’s a certainty.

      • Lion_ess

Well, they’re two half-leaders aren’t they – by my reckoning they should split the leader’s salary into the number of me-too’s that want to be co-leaders.

      • Mr_Blobby

Sounds like the Maori party, they wanted 3 leaders.

  • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

What the hell with this poll? Doesn’t make a damn difference who runs the toxic Greens. They are sure to get 12-13% in 2014 election. Commie Norman will be Deputy PM and Tuatara Turei will be Minister for some crap which Sheep will decide. Let us move on boys.

  • Pita

Not just the leader of the Greens… but the default leader of the opposition.
Is it just me or is he the “go to” man for the MSM when they want a coherent sound bite?

  • Dave

You cant change a sow to a silk purse no matter how you dress the pig! And you cant change an Aussie commie into a proper leader. Normans only here for himself, unfortunately, he shines through wonderfully when standing next to Shearer.

  • johnbronkhorst

Under the definition of “leader” and what makes a “leader”. .None of the above should have been an option.

  • Phar Lap

So thats what a wet back Australian reject commie “green” face looks like.Imagine under the MMP system a foreigner unelected like Norman ,could have the balance of power in NZ.Even if National had more electoral seats.Seems something could be wrong in the state of NZs voting system. To make it even worse look at his running mate FFS.

    • Phar Lap

Heard him say to Larry Williams he dont like the GCSB same as Mr Schmidts both of them hate the GCSB .Well as two foreigners .they can go back to where the came from. After all it is not compulsory to stay in NZ.

      • Hazards001

Totally agree “Well as two foreigners .they can go back to where the came from. After all it is not compulsory to stay in NZ.”

It is for me. I’m a New Zealander. I can only live and work in NZ. No where else unless I apply for and get a visa and as I don’t qualify for a working visa anywhere in the world (apart from Australia….and they discriminate against Kiwi’s) I have to live and work here so why should that wetback Norman be treated any differently in NZ than I am in Australia? Time we changed a few laws here to keep up!

  • unitedtribes

I wonder if ACT has enough members to have two leaders

  • Lion_ess

And then of course, there’s the Labour Party with no Leader.

  • I watch that show backbenchers and the Green MP’s are all so terribly rude and inconsiderate towards the other MP’s on the show. They yell and rant and talk over the other MP’s. They just have no manners. Metiria Turei and that Green MP chick with the moustache are the absolute worst.

  • Troy

And given Norman is a wanker of the highest order… wish he’d just fuck off back to oz and vomit forth his toxic loonie policies there. Problem is there seem to be way too many stupid green supporters here who haven’t really engaged their brains to work out how fucked up a green/red govt would really be…
