Disqus update offers a little more privacy

tumblr_inline_mp9tp1sgbL1qz4rgpDisqus, the comment system used by many blogs world-wide, and indeed Whaleoil, now allows you some control over who gets to see your comment history:

We’re also happy to announce that starting today, you can choose to keep your comment activity private. Your activity will still be public to anyone on the site where you left them, but your activity through your profile or other activity feeds will not be public.

When you make your Disqus activity private, the following restrictions are added to your account:

  • Your comment history and activity will only be viewable by you.
  • People who are currently following your account will no longer be able to see your activity via your profile or daily digest emails.
  • People will no longer be able to follow your account. The number of existing followers will still appear in your profile stats, but they will not be able to view your activity.

Please visit our FAQ for more information or questions about this new feature.

Whilst you are at it, make down votes transparent also.

    • Travis Poulson

Doesn’t provide any benefit. Just gives the commenter a target to whine about down voting.

      • OT Richter

        Down vote for you!

        • Travis Poulson

Who was that? was it you? I bet it was! how dare you! What is your explanation for this?

          • Travis Poulson

Downvoted you back, that’ll show you!

          • OT Richter

Feel the wrath and power of the OTRDV.

          • Travis Poulson

Heh, but silliness aside, a couple of years ago Disqus allowed for transparency of both down and upvotes, then they changed it so neither were viewable, then more recently up votes again. I guess if you wait long enough it’ll complete the full cycle again. Disqus are constantly making tweaks and changing things that work ok, I wish they were as proactive about the actual problems, and theres been plenty of those.

Yeah, I’m not interested in engaging with someone just because they chose to disagree with me. If they chose to comment on it then fine we can have a discussion.
Hell my best mates often disagree with me (if they agreed with me all the time they wouldn’t be mates they’d be sycophants!).
If my comment offends someone on here so much they don’t want to engage then a simple downvote says it all. Leave it anonymous.

Done. Its bad enough admitting the last comment you made without dredging up the past

  • Travis Poulson

Also needs a troll filter, being able to filter comments of selected people, but of course only works if that person has a disqus account.

    • Jonathan Pull

Thats funny, you yourself have admitted to trolling before.
Would you apply said filter to yourself?

      • Travis Poulson

You funny guy you. I’m rolling on the floor in stitches.

      • Rangi

If you want consistency on this site, you’ll be consistently let down.

    • You can still ban folks by IP, email address, etc. An account is not required.

      • Travis Poulson

Its about all users being able to filter comments, rather than mods banning.

  • cruiseyman

If a commenter is removed do all their old comments show up as ‘guest’?

    • TomTom

Generally that’s when a person “deletes” their comment – Disqus just removes listing you as the author of that comment and changes it to ‘Guest’

  • Mr_Blobby

Done. Getting tired of the stalkers on my account.

  • sheppy

Its a tickbox at the bottom of the profile tab in case anyones not found it

  • Hazards001

Not doing that. I stand by the shit I said…even if a lot of the time I wish I hadn’t. That’s life. Hiding it from someone that wants confirmation I’m a tosser is lame. They’ll either see I am in their eyes or they’ll think I’m something else.
    Leaving it out there.

    • Rangi

Good on you! Describing what you say as “shit”, it must be a relief to be so honest with yourself. Im just wandering why you are so open about it?

    • What about trolls and spammers who stalk you?

  • Rangi

Not doing it either, I look forward to being pulled up on things I might of said. If I am found wanting. I’ll mend & learn from it.

Garbage article. A complete repost from the Disqus blog with no originality.
