Face of the day

This column usually induces a sizeable outpouring of internet comment, sometimes abusive, frequently missing the point, and occasionally leading to exchanges between the various commentators.

What specially fascinates me are the regular “I never read Jones but …” opening preambles when plainly they do, plus the paroxysm of rage sometimes induced over the most innocuous remark.”

– Tired old pisshead Bob Jones ranting online about how he doesn’t care about the opinion of people who rant online.

Whats not to like about bob?

    • Travis Poulson

He’s stuck in the past. I was once a supporter, but he’s showing how out of touch he really is now. Who writes an article talking about how they don’t know anything about how to send a text message etc? Someone that refuses to move with the times. He probably thinks print news will last forever too, he HAD some good ideas but now he’s just sounding like a grumpy old pisshead. He bailed on Joseph Parker too because the promoter lined him up to fight Francois Botha, and he didn’t think he was ready, well we all know what happened there. Shows how much faith he had. Bob should just kick back in his retirement and watch the world leave him behind since he refuses to keep up with it. People hang on his every word just because he likes to bash around the treaty every now and then in his column.

      • snakebit

Fair points… i do like a good treaty bashing though…:-)

        • Travis Poulson

Oh don’t get me wrong, we all do! And there’s not enough of it. If the Gummint is looking for ways to slash wasted $, don’t stop at bludgers, slash and burn treaty claims too.

          • AngryTory

If the govt wants to save some $$$ – why don’t they actually cut benefits, instead of spending billions more to “empower” bureaucrats?

      • Michael

Its his choice to not move with the technology, what harm does that cause to you (or anyone else).

      • Cadwallader

I am not sure as I agree. Bob has earned his retirement and the retention of his opinions. If he is now out of time so be it, but that doesn’t abrogate his opinions.

      • Bunswalla

Trav like many I think he generally nails it, even if he is a bit of a one-trick pony with his specialty of skewering the chattering classes. Last week’s article was (IMO) bang on; this week he was clearly off his game. I’m happy to forgive him that.

        • Travis Poulson

Yep he nails it, but so do alot of people. Alot of commenters here cling onto the man he USED TO be. Now he’s just a noise making vessel like the rest of us, but some like to pretend he’s STILL more than that, he’s not.

          • Sheesh Trav, did he steal your girlfriend or does he still owe you money?

            ;)

          • Travis Poulson

I’m sick of getting up votes. (And doing my bit to ensure the blog isn’t a complete circle jerk)

          • Agent BallSack

            Oh crap I upvoted you!

          • Dave

Sorry Travis, I think everyone used their down vote quota for the day/month/year on Kosh/Meg/Gayguy/TeachersCock.

          • Dave

PS if you really need to see “a complete circle jerk” pop over to the Stranded.

          • Travis Poulson

I don’t need to see the gooey coating on the walls and faces over there.

I do occasionally go over there though, just to remind myself what the alternative to reality is.

    • LesleyNZ

He never smiles – maybe Bob and John Minto are brothers……..unhappy chappies.

    • Guest

There is a ‘lot not to like’ about this guy and if you remember the 80s you will understand. The $80m ‘management fee’ sucked out just before the company went under and the host of kiwi battlers who went to their graves ruing the day they first heard the names Jones and Moriarty

  • Rodger T

Opinions, like arseholes ,we`ve all got ` em .

  • Muffin

    I think bobs great

  • Michael

Sir Bob is a national treasure who calls out the terminally stupid week after week.

    • kehua

Yep it takes one to know one.

  • tarkwin

The only part of the Horrid worth reading. love him or hate him at least he’s entertaining.

  • GazzW

I must be showing my age but NZ would be a lot poorer without Bob Jones and the politicians, bureaucrats & ivory tower occupiers would be a lot happier.

The spectacle of Sir Bob walloping TV One’s Rod Vaughan right on the snorer for having the temerity to disturb his fishing is a sight that I will never forget.

    • Travis Poulson

That’s the other thing, he punched someone in the schnozzer. Doesn’t make him a national hero.

      • jaundiced

        Yeah, it does!

      • GazzW

As a man of the bush Trav your attitude surprises me. I can just imagine yours or Cam’s rage if you were just quietly lining up a stag in your sights and Rod Vaughan complete with accompanying cameraman came bursting out of the undergrowth.

Yes it does make him a national hero. It was bloody funny too.

        • Travis Poulson

That’s really getting off track Gaz and beside the point.

          • GazzW

No it isn’t Travis. You questioned me on my statement about Rod Vaughan and I answered you. I think you would be enraged and rightfully so but you haven’t exactly answered my question. Saying that I’m off track and that its pointless is just being evasive.

          • Travis Poulson

I could answer it, as I had another hunter ruin half a days hunting last april, but as I said thats beside the point.
Would I be enraged at Vaughan? Of course. I’m not disputing whether or not what he did was right or wrong.

And remember I didn’t raise what he did to Vaughan, you did.

      • Not Mark Richardson

        he punched the MSM travis

can he get some gold stars for that knighthood please!

  • blokeintakapuna

In a PC world gone far too soft – he’s a breath of fresh air… and pipe smoke, witty one liners and is self made.
Sir Bob & Marc Ellis as joint Mayor’s for Auckland!
That would really get the snivelling socialists in a tizzy…

  • Bruce

Visited Bobby’s office once. Four seasons playing (much like visiting National Bank). One computer in the entire office for receiving all correspondence. Staff not allowed cellphones (even personal ones) at work. The news comes in print for this guy, and clearly the world has passed him by. This is not eccentric behavior, it is plain stupidity.

    • johnbronkhorst

and yet he is still wealthy!!.. notice it was YOU visiting HIS office!

      • Bunswalla

No doubt trying to sell something.

        • johnbronkhorst

Maybe the better reason would be….to ask Bob how he became wealthy…more valuable than a one off sale!!!

          • Bunswalla

Very easy formula, just read any of his books on the subject. Jones on Property in 1977 is probably the best place to start. While the market and economy have gone through numerous changes since then, his philosophies still hold true.

          • Dave

And the KEY point from Bruces Point.
            HIS OFFICE.
Hey Bruce, don’t argue with the lion when you enter his den. There are CEO’s the world over that don’t use email, that have everything brought to him, and by other accounts he can be a very generous man. A man I admire, he stands true to his beliefs, not afraid to have a go, backs himself.
On the other hand, compare a man who can use a smart phone, email, a computer…… Lets see, say SHEARER cant fight his way out of a paper bag, let alone express himself, Jones, shreds journo’s, then smashes them.

          • Mediaan

And I could name one CEO of a public company on the main stock exchange, a tech-savvy company, that refuses to have a cellphone.

And another, worth well over $100m, owner of a major private company, who can’t use his one except to take calls.

      • Bruce

Actually had to visit him to complete lease negotiations. As there were so many emails coming into the ‘one’ computer, that his staff had misplaced the correspondence. And I guess the test of whether the philosophy works is looking around his team, who were a frustrated bunch.

Whether you like it or not, we are a technology driven world, this blog as a means of news and communication attests to that, and WO comments that Sir Bob does not care about the opinion of people that rant online, shows his general disconnect with the wider populous, wealth has nothing to do with it.

        • Travis Poulson

“Whether you like it or not, we are a technology driven world, this blog as a means of news and communication attests to that, and WO comments that Sir Bob does not care about the opinion of people that rant online, shows his general disconnect with the wider populous, wealth has nothing to do with it.”

Precisely. Just a silly old cunt with a big cheque book and an opinion.

          • kehua

Right on Travis, he`s a boring old fart, same old opera from a worn out star.

          • Travis Poulson

Truth is I knew I’d upset most of the readers (as is evident in the down votes) slagging off their geriatric messiah, but I don’t give a rats hairy arse. Him and Winston need to be put out to pasture. Readers are all keen to jump on the bandwagon had it been anyone else (such as Winston) but don’t dare speak ill of our precious Bob!

    • Never in the dark…..

How many ugly women did you see when you visited the offices?

I don’t care if this sounds sexist, but I thought “I should bring my son in here….” Definitely good descendant material there.

      • bruce

In the main, it was a female team. And none were hard on the eyes…

  • AngryTory

Jones wiped out Muldoon and drove him into an early grave.

How many PM’s have you taken down?

(hell that school teacher is still employed)

    • Travis Poulson

Would you crow to the same dawn chorus if Winston took down Key?

      • Bunswalla

Please limit your hypothetical scenarios to the realms of the possible… Winnie’s been trying and failing for years now. His latest spray is typical, he laid a complaint with the Police about the GCSB report leak and when it was turned down flat he said “Oh no wait, I have much more information to come out yet, and when it does the Police are going to look foolish.”

Should be prosecuted for withholding information material to a police enquiry, and wasting police time.

        • Travis Poulson

Should be, won’t be. Don’t forget he came back from the dead without a mark on him. 158k we’ll never get back.

        • Dave

Winnie has succeeded time and time again Buns,
I have never known a political to come back from the dead like a phoenix rising, although Krudd just achieved the same.
That and his ability to empty countless bottles of alcohol and still stand up prove that he is very successful :)

  • GregM

Looking at the contribution Bob has made to NZ over the years, I think he is perfectly entitled to be a tired old pisshead.
Thumping Rod Vaughan was gold, offering to pay double the fine if he could do it again was priceless.

    • Dave

He has been completely true to his beliefs, and he continues to be. If it costs him a few dollars, he doesn’t care. Countless others simply fold to the mighty Dollar – bob even thumbs his nose at the Judiciary – good on him, enjoy yourself Bob, you have lived a good life.
PS: If you come across the Gnome Campbell, can you give him one for me!!

    • Anonymouse Coward

“Looking at the contribution Bob has made to NZ over the years”

People who put their money into Robt Jones Investments Ltd may have a slightly less grateful opinion of Sir Robert than you.

Though to be fair it took a fierce storm to sink it when a lot of other property companies of the era where sunk by a mere squall.

      • GregM

Yep fair comment. But I do think the positives far outweigh the negatives.

      • Mediaan

True. It was loyalty to Sir Robert that kept the company going so long. Then he quietly undersold and skipped the country.

  • Greg Davis

Better him a “tired old pisshead” than the likes of Muldoon. Un-called for.

  • rouppe

Oh my… In this photo he is the spitting image of Charles Montgomery Burns

  • LabTested

Why is there a painting of a Horse’s bollocks in the background? I don’t understand modern art

  • Agent BallSack

The great thing about Sir Bob is that he doesnt give a shit who he pisses off. He has the money to annoy any one he wants and beat them down in litigation. Very few in NZ has the balls he does theyre all too worried about offending people. If you dont like him youre halfway to being a PC bitch, next thing you’ll be voting Labour.

  • Never in the dark…..
    • Orange

      ok thats freaky

    • Bunswalla

      Release the hounds!

  • Tom

That’s SIR Bob by the way, bless him

    • Mediaan

He signed a resignation from the “Sir” part. Tonight, in a tv debate on the monarchy. At the request of Duncan Garner, who was leading the team against the motion of “Dump the Monarchy”.

      Probably won’t post it though.

Bob Jones mentioned, along the way in tonight’s debate, that he was in London two weeks ago.

Hmmm. That would put him there when various monarch-recognised people (with qualifications like a knighthood) were in London having a dinner or 60th Anniversary of Monarchy function with the Royal Family. nBetcha $10 you were in London attending that, Sir Robert.

      Old schemer.

The debate was won convincingly by the public vote, to keep the monarchy.

  • Phar Lap

Bob Jones a real Kiwi has earned the right to tell it like it is.Compare the half baked Turei and Australian import Norman from sabotage” green taleban” party both getting coverage by the MSM on the best way to destroy the NZ economy and its way of life.Bob Jones a man for all seasons and reasons. The previously mentioned jointly owned self styled and employed list MPs ,there is nothing good we can say about them.

  • LesleyNZ

Money can’t buy you happiness – think you really understand what this means when you get old.

    • Dave

Have to take your word for it Lesley, or, wait another 10 – 20 years to find out :)

      • LesleyNZ

I am nearly old old…….maybe a few more years to go. Quite a bit over halfway now.

  • Justsayn

Well done Travis! You have reminded us why we like people such as Sir Bob.

Are you advising Greenpeace on their advertising spend?

  • Steve (North Shore)

The classic is asking if he payed double the fine if he could do it again
