Sue Moroney’s statement “In the Labour Party we’re really clear that we want to be more representative of the New Zealand society at large”?
If so, do you think we should kick some Maori out of parliament? 23/122 MPs are of Maori descent, representing 18.9% of Parliament, but only 14.6% of NZers (according to the 2006 census) are of Maori descent. Maybe we could replace some of these Maori with Asians who, like women, are also underrepresented in parliament?

    • Agent BallSack

Since Asians are traditionally National voters I have no issues with that.

    • MarcWills

They are going to have to sack quite a few “Rainbow” members too to make their numbers in Labour representative of the overall population.

      • davcav

What percentage of the population are union members???

  • Agent BallSack

Labour already HAS 41% women MPs. If this is the policy thats being shunted before them perhaps we need LESS!

    • cows4me

      Yeah a shit load less.

  • Peej

The Labour party certainly is in the minds of the people, for whatever reasons, as shown by 7 of the last 11 topics being about them. They must be overjoyed that the light, goodness and positivity emanating from the collective wisdom is directed at them.

    • Dave

Indeed, the labour party is on the minds of kiwis, so is having the daily dump, and both are heading down the “S” bend.

  • Agent BallSack

Have to wonder who they have in mind. They obviously want all straight guys out of the party so I guess thats Shearer and O’Connor gone to be replaced by dykes or unionists. Keep it up Labour, can’t wait for the next poll.

  • Shoreboy57

How many unionists and teachers do they need to kick out to be truly representative?

  • Travis

Didn’t someone say women are already 51% of voters. That’s the Lions shearer (intended) and they still need to enforce it. Maybe somebody in Labours statistics dept. could not work out that woman actually want to vote for men too. Unbeknown to them men want to vote for women. I wonder what we could call this type of system? I think it might start with “D”. & I wonder what they might call Labours policy, not P.C more than that – maybe S.C, Sexist Communism.
P.S or should I say P.P.S – Party Personification Override.

DPF shows the result of a quota for Labour at the last election, main quote:

“This shows well the problems of quotas. You’d get gender equality, yet knock out a Maori, two Asians and a Pacific Islander which means less diversity in other areas.”

Incidentally I don’t think a female quota will go down badly at all with some parts of the electorate, and DPF’s sentence above is a better way of explaining what happens when you introduce a quota.

  • Agent BallSack

    DPF has run the numbers:

A the last election Labour got 34 MPs. 22 were male and 12 female. Under Labour’s proposed quota, the bottom five men on the list would have to have been placed below the next five women. So who would have been the lucky five women to have got in:

    Carol Beaumont

    Carmel Sepuloni

    Deborah Mahuta-Coyle

    Steve Chadwick

    Kate Sutton

The next after that is Josie Pagani and Lynette Stewart.

More interesting is who are the five men who would have been dumped:

    Raymond Huo

    Rajen Prasad

    Shane Jones

    Andrew Little

    Charles Chauvel

    • Dave

Excellent find ABS, must say DPF’s work looks great, perhaps it is a brilliant strategy of labour to improve the collective IQ of the Labour party by 100%.

Getting rid of those 5 blokes is a master stroke.

    • Mr Sackunkrak

So, no discernible improvement in talent then.

  • Dave Broad

Stupidity is the only reason Labour still gets in the headlines.

  • Bunswalla

“Labour move aimed at more women candidates”

Well done, Otago Daily Times – you win this week’s Stating the Bleeding Obvious prize, or do you have to really spell things out for the scarfies?

  • IWantToBeLikeMallardOneDay

Why do you think that women are best at representing women. I always thought a misogynist was a man who hates women as much as women hate each other…
