Front page of the Herald, 3 weeks behind WOBH

I see the Herald has run a front-page story about the dodgy ratbags passing themselves off as Google, a story we covered 3 weeks ago on July 26.

Fraud police are investigating a New Zealand company calling itself GoogleDirectory – set up with no links to the internet giant but which has listed thousands of businesses and state agencies.

The company launched last month, but had been signing on companies since at least May, promoting itself as a new online marketing tool.

Detective Sergeant Aaron Pascoe, of the Auckland central police financial crime unit, said police had received several fraud complaints from businesses.

I wonder if people realised they’d been tucked after a series of posts we ran on July 26.

Anyone from Google NZ want to look into this scam?

Simon McLeod didn’t take kindly to those articles, he phoned at the time and abused and threatened me…I know, hilarious really…I’m still waiting for the lawyers letters he threatened.

I note they refer to a “Herald Investigation”. It’s good that a “Herald Investigation” is now defined as reading WhaleOil.

…AND it only took them 3 weeks… seems they’re improving!

I was disappointed but not surprised that there was no WOBH hattip!!

I am surprised that Google did not go for an immediate ingunction for ‘passing off'(no need to refer to trade marks, etc for passing off, but legal hurdle is higher than for trademark breach).. I am no fan of those sorts of injunctions, but if people are being ripped off then fair enough. Alternatively Google could have used its internet clout to make life miserable for the imposter, as long as that is done in good faith.

I read your blogs about this ass-clown a few weeks back & got in touch with a few contacts at Google – surprised it’s taken so long to hear anything’s being done about it (& his site’s still up??).

  • Rodger T

    He`s certainly got google eyes.

    • Travis Poulson

They’ll pop right out of his head when he gets bent over in his cell.

I quietly sniggered to myself when I saw that on the stand in the services station this morning. I believe the exact thought that went through my head was ‘bit late on that being breaking news….’
