I bet she was registered too

The Labour party and the Teachers Council and the various teacher unions all oppose charter schools on the premise that because the government will not require mandatory registration of all teachers in a charter school that they will be unsafe for kids.

Currently there is a mandatory registration for teachers and applies to all schools. The regime doesn’t appear to be protecting the kids at all well. We have seen the prosecution of James Parker for sexually abuse pupils over many many years. He was registered. There is a headline a day almost of a registered teacher before the courts on one crime after another.

Including stealing a child’s prescription medicine…all while registered and the  system was protecting the kids:

A Western Bay teacher has been accused of stealing a young student’s medication.

The woman is charged with theft of the Class B controlled drug Concerta – a prescription drug which treats attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
She is set to defend the charges next month but secrecy surrounds the case.

The matter has not been publicised but the Bay of Plenty Times Weekend learned of it this week and has sighted court documents that reveal police allege the teacher stole the medication between May 24 and 28 this year.

The teacher, who has interim name suppression, is set to defend the charge at a two-day hearing set down to begin in Tauranga District Court on September 2.

The school’s principal confirmed the staff member had been arrested on May 30, and was undergoing an internal disciplinary process at the school. The principal said the alleged theft had been uncovered due to the school’s “robust internal audit processes” but he refused to elaborate on how the teacher was identified as the alleged culprit.

“I am not prepared to discuss that while there is an outstanding court process, and disciplinary process but what I can say is that students’ safety was not compromised,” he told the newspaper yesterday.

The principal confirmed he and several staff members would be prosecution witnesses during the defended hearing, but said the rest of the school community had not yet been told about the case.

Don’t you just love the way the school has tried to keep this all quiet. Protecting the rights of dodgy teacher over those of a child they were supposed to protect.

This school needs to outed, the teacher named, and the secrecy to end in all matters where many, many children were put at risk by the actions of registered teachers.

I’ll bet that if asked about this case the Teachers Council will say they are aware of it and awaiting the outcome of blah blah blah…meaning the teacher still has registration.

I would be quite happy for registration to be a requirement for charter school teachers. But the Teachers Council will need to be completely reconstituted with all appointments by the Minister with unions having no say in the matter. Secondly there must be significantly less emphasis and more flexibility on formal qualifications.

Otherwise let charter schools do their own thing as long as they arrange police vetting.

Now why would a teacher steal a prescription drug which treats attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)? Is there a secret ingredient for drug addicts? This teacher should be named.

    • Tom

It can be sold and is sought after on the drugs market.

        What next? Terrible……………..

Ritalin as an amphetamine, with people with ADHD it actually calms then down unlike most people

Perhaps it would be easier to have a register of teachers who AREN’T kiddie fiddlers, fraudsters, thieves, druggies, into sex with pupils, who don’t take out contracts on others … etc. It might be easier on the Teachers Council.

Maybe the teacher wanted to give some other kid a dose?
