In his early 20’s John D. Rockefeller was employed as a clerk to a local businessman and fell in love with his daughter. When he approached the businessman to ask for her hand in marriage he was soundly rebuffed as a no account clerk with no future prospects. Rockefeller quit his job heartbroken and never saw the girl again but swore revenge on her father.
A few years later he bankrupted the girls father and went on to build the Rockefeller empire. (Or so I heard)
EDIT: I heard this story on a Southland Radio station when I was 12 years old working as a roustabout in a wool shed at xmas time to earn a few bucks so I could go to an Agricultural College when I left school(which I did). I loved it and never questioned it and never have.
