Ruataniwha ructions continue

I have blogged extensively about the Ruataniwha dam and the ratbags at the Hawkes Bay Regional Council. I have alluded to their being more to come on the issue especially with regards to bullying from the HBRC in order to get what they want.

The controversy around the massive Ruataniwha Dam irrigation scheme is spreading with the Green Party today claiming GNS scientists concerned about water quality issues were effectively gagged by Hawkes Bay Regional Council which is pushing the project.

… Russel Norman claimed that Geological and Nuclear Science (GNS) scientists hired by the Hawkes Bay Regional Council to conduct groundwater modelling work related to the dam raised “serious concerns” about information provided by the council to support that work.

Questioning Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce, Dr Norman asked whether those scientists were pressure to complete their report on the dam by the council, “despite their objecting strenuously to the accuracy of the information they were supplied to work with”.

Dr Norman asked whether the scientists’ contract with the council was terminated after they insisted on recording their concerns in their final report.

When this was discussed in parliament it really sounded just like my sources in government, the HBRC and from the area have been telling me…ratbag councillors and the council acting like Boss Hogg and running around gagging and threatening  people to produce reports in line with their bludging socialist ways.

The deal as far as  I understand is that HBRC tore up the GNS contract when they wouldn’t say the modeling HBRC were using wasn’t dodgy. The head of science went to Wellington to tell them they had to come up with different findings, and when they told him the science didn’t support the results he needed for the dam he told them to stick it.

So GNS lost the contract to NIWA, and the guy who was on the project got given the arse as they no longer had any work for him. Consequently we have seen extensive justification of the dam based in the NIWA reports.

The council have a gagging order on GNS so the scientist has not been able to say anything…but he wants too. If there is a change in council it will all come out, and it may come out anyway.

It is only a matter of time as people start to become whistle-blowers. Readers have slammed me for opposing this dam, but I have seen a lot more of the evidence than they have and this isn’t about national politics, it is about standing up to ratbags.
