Have you eradicated poverty today?

Who knew that all you needed was one day?

Crusades are Christian religious wars, aren’t they?

So we can eradicate poverty in one day using a Christian war?  You have to hand to to Hels, she gets shit done.

Poverty is not something that can be eradicated; it is desperately naive to imagine that it can – and not only because of the obvious fact that poverty is relative.

    • In Vino Veritas

No ohope, it can’t and never will be given the measure of poverty is based on a percentage of median income, so there will always be poverty in this country at least. Laughably if you actually go to some African countries where they get by on $1 a day or something like that, they don’t actually think of themselves as poor! Its entirely normal!!

      • OhopeBeachBugger

Quite right – and measuring poverty by the dollar is just silly. Those Africans don’t eat dollars, they eat maize, cassava and the occasional bit of goat…

    • Polish Pride

      It can’t…..under the current system
It can be easily eradicated by transitioning to a Resource based economy. The same goes for war and any crime where the motivation is money…

      • BR

I have a question about your resource based economy.

        What is it?

I’m not asking what are the benefits, or the outcomes, I would just like an explanation of what it actually is. I have yet to see one. Take the WO readership through the nuts and bolts of a resource based economy.

        Bill

        • OhopeBeachBugger

Bill, it is so complicated that it cannot be easily explained (that was one of the first things I asked a mate of mine who believes in this tosh and he could not explain it). That fact alone dooms it to failure. But if you really want to know more, check here (advance warning, it is a lot of hippy bullshit): http://www.theresourcebasedeconomy.com/about/

          • Polish Pride

I read that – some good info further down but yes written by hippies and not really detailing the nuts and bolts that Bills after .

        • Polish Pride

Sounds like a good idea. That could be a significant exercise but if there are areas of interest or examples you’d like to see then I could go over those and those examples could provide either the context for other areas or raise questions about other areas. Any thoughts on that approach or things you’d like me to start with?

          • BR

“Any thoughts on that approach or things you’d like me to start with?”

            Yes.

What is a resource based economy?

Just tell me what it is. Don’t tell me that money is not required. I already know that.

If someone asked me: “What is a free market?” I would simply reply that it is the freedom of exchange. No further definition is necessary.

            Bill.

          • Polish Pride

A Resource Based Economy is essentially a Gift Economy where the focus is about the delivery of resources to all who want and need them in the most efficient way possible and maximizes the use of science and technology to achieve this.

          • BR

So how is it possible to keep account of how much has been contributed and by whom, and how much has been consumed and by whom? In other words, what safeguards are there in place to discourage bludging and skiving?

            Bill.

      • OhopeBeachBugger

Oh gawd Polish!!! Have a happy weekend mate.

PS people fought over resources long before there was money.

        • Polish Pride

yes they did….. because of scarcity and accessabilty due to lack of appropriate technology, problems we don’t have now ;)
y’know if you’d all just agree to move to it I’d shut up about it then haha. You have a good weekend too.

          • OhopeBeachBugger

Cheers mate, you keep fighting the good fight.

    • Bretto

Very considerate how Labour goes on about eradicating “child poverty”… I didn’t realise so many couples couldn’t have children.

  • mike

Well if they took the entire UNDP budget (in 2010 it was USD$5B) and gave it out to the poor and the needy then they would of achieved a lot more than they currently have!

  • JC

As George Bush and others have found, using the word “Crusade” is an incredible insult to Islam. Hels should be seeing the bombers coming over the hill about now..

    JC

    • OhopeBeachBugger

Muslims have incredibly thin skins, don’t they…

  • Rex Widerstrom

Hold on, didn’t all that poverty business stop when some incredibly rich twats sung “We are the world” about 30 years ago?

Helen Clark: now as relevant as Bono.

    • Patrick

At least Bono has a back catalogue of some good music, what does Helen have?
I would have said Clarke is as relevant as Geldof, & a Boomtown Rat as well considering how she & Cullen wasted the boom times

  • dyannt

Good lord. How many years and she’s still using “that” photo.

  • Orange

It’s only a crusade if it involves muslims. Oh wait, it is. Mmm, Hels has been in the job for quite a time now. Has she managed to produce a video?

  • botti

Birth control shots as a condition of welfare/aid is the only way to reduce poverty.

In Sub-Saharan Africa for example the population is projected to double to 2 billion by 2050. At the same time there will be fewer Europeans and Asians (below replacement fertility levels) to provide aid.

    • OhopeBeachBugger

Africa has ways of keeping it’s populations intact – in particular, the type of leader favoured there.

    • Patrick

Lack of access to HIV drugs will keep the numbers in check & health Ministers such as the ANC’s Minister under Mbeki recommending eating beetroot to cure AIDS will also help retard population growth.
I suggest the Chinese being given unfettered access to the minerals & resources throughout Africa will do little to lift the health standards as well. They are not universally known for their attention to detail when it comes to topics such as human rights/welfare.
Still Helen will get to mix it & rub shoulders with the great & good of the world, singers, actors etc, the photos will look great on her wall & the CV will be impressive.

      • OhopeBeachBugger

        Heh, saffa ;-).

        • Patrick

          No, KIWI.

I have however visited SA on numerous occasions & therefore take some interest in the country & its’ neighbours.

          False accusation – your scull.

          • OhopeBeachBugger

            Gulp!

  • GregM

I have some good news. With Helen eradicating poverty and Dave Shearer saving 50 million lives on the skin of a mango, the UN can now reduce their staffing levels to two.
Governments can now spend the money on their citizens, rather than wasting it on the bloated pig that the UN has become.

    • Patrick

      Saved NZ from Capitalism (tick)
      Ended world hunger (tick)

      Whatever can be next/left?

      • Nechtan

Turn men to stone with a single glance (tick)
Get invited to Balmoral for tea and scones. (pending)

  • Time For Accountability

    Helen the avatar fraud.
    Still promoting a false image.

The irony in the Len Brown issue is that she cheated on her husband and her affairs were totally ignored by the media including her lapdog Brian.

  • cows4me

Come now a real Marxist doesn’t wish to eradicate poverty, where’s the joy in that? A hungry man is a man with little choice, a hungry man would happily give up his elegance to those that have only their own interests at heart. The UN and the parasites that infest it have only one agenda and they will be the overlords.

  • Mr_Blobby

And on the 7th day she rested.

It will be outfits like Kickstart that succeed in helping people get *themselves* out of poverty –
    http://www.kickstart.org/

It *won’t* be troughing socialist bitches like the Clarkbeast and her corrupt inefficient UNDP.

Kickstart, with things like their “treadle water-pump”, have done a thousand times more for poor people than the UNDP will *ever* do. By buying that, people get *themselves* out of poverty.

It’s a funny old thing called CAPITALISM.

What is the banner on the Kickstart website?
    “Handouts will not solve poverty”.

So, Clarkbeast – piss off back under your rock.
