The left wing’s central delusion

If you don;t think the left wing is delusional then go have a read of The Daily Blog, or The Standard echo chambers…even Russell Brown’s cooking and music blog Public Address. Don’t just read the posts…read the comments for the truly delusional.

How delusional are they? Well…they think thy are the middle of New Zealand political thought….they really do.

And that leads into what Thomas Sowell has to say about the delusions of the left.

The fundamental problem of the political Left seems to be that the real world does not fit their preconceptions. Therefore they see the real world as what is wrong, and what needs to be changed, since apparently their preconceptions cannot be wrong.

A never-ending source of grievances for the Left is the fact that some groups are “over-represented” in desirable occupations, institutions, and income brackets, while other groups are “under-represented.”

From all the indignation and outrage about this expressed on the left, you might think that it was impossible that different groups are simply better at different things.

Whole books could be filled with the unequal behavior or performances of people, or the unequal geographic settings in which whole races, nations, and civilizations have developed. Yet the preconceptions of the political Left march on undaunted, loudly proclaiming sinister reasons why outcomes are not equal within nations or between nations.

All this moral melodrama has served as a background for the political agenda of the Left, which has claimed to be able to lift the poor out of poverty, and in general make the world a better place. This claim has been made for centuries and in countries around the world. And it has failed for centuries in countries around the world.

A lgacy of failure and yet useful iiots of the left embrace socialism as the solution to the world’s ills. It is the cause not the solution.

Some of the most sweeping and spectacular rhetoric of the Left occurred in 18th-century France, where the very concept of the Left originated in the fact that people with certain views sat on the left side of the National Assembly.

The French Revolution was their chance to show what they could do when they got the power they sought. In contrast to what they promised — “liberty, equality, fraternity” — what they actually produced were food shortages, mob violence, and dictatorial powers that included arbitrary executions, extending even to their own leaders, such as Robespierre, who died under the guillotine.

In the 20th century, the most sweeping vision of the Left — Communism — spread over vast regions of the world and encompassed well over a billion human beings. Of these, millions died of starvation in the Soviet Union under Stalin and tens of millions in China under Mao.

Milder versions of socialism, with central planning of national economies, took root in India and in various European democracies.

If the preconceptions of the Left were correct, central planning by educated elites who had vast amounts of statistical data at their fingertips and expertise readily available, and were backed by the power of government, should have been more successful than market economies where millions of individuals pursued their own individual interests willy-nilly.

But, by the end of the 20th century, even socialist and communist governments began abandoning central planning and allowing more market competition. Yet this quiet capitulation to inescapable realities did not end the noisy claims of the Left.

And here we have the left proclaiming that state control of supermarkets and power stations and housing will solve all our problems. It won;t it will cause shortage and unhappiness.

and more will die under delusional Green ideologies, socialism masquerading as environmentalism.

Yeah, I often point out that the Commies hate all “well off” people – and look what happened when they came to power. The Nazis hated Jews – and look what happened when they came to power. The Greens hate all humans…..

Almost all the carnage of the 20th century was attributable to the political left. The inability to face reailty always ends in tears.

This movie is my favourite political commentary on leftwing policies. I’d like to see John Cleese vs Russel Brand.

  • timemagazine

To the millions starved under Stalin, you can add a few millions more from the rest of the eastern block. The sad thing is that people still admire mass murderers like Stalin and Mao.

    • At least everyone had an equal opportunity to be hungry instead of most people eating. That’s fairer.

        Winston Churchill:

“Free markets are the unequal sharing of blessing. Socialism is the equal sharing of misery”

“Vladimir Lenin is undergoing the world’s most expensive ever economics lesson: the cost is millions of Russian lives”

“The difference between the early Christians and socialism is that the early Christians held that all that is mine is thine. Under socialism, all that is thine is mine”

“Had Hitler invaded hell, I might have referred favourably to the devil in the House of Commons”

“Trying to tax our way to prosperity is like standing in a bucket and pulling on the handle and expecting to be able to lift yourself”

zimbabwe is a prime example of how not to run a country

    • Team ENZ

and now we have a labour/green talibans wanting to control power generation, assetts and run the country like Zimbabwe where adolf mugabe ran out the white farmers off their lands and control it, now the country has not enough food or money, we can imagine what would happen to NZ should they be in charge.

WO – *Every Labour voter* in the country should be shown that post. It is outstanding.

    • philbest

Sowell should be compulsory reading before anyone is allowed to vote.

    • James Growley

      Assuming they can read……….

The biggest delusion of the left is that some of these things actually exist.

The Labour/Greens are akin to soldiers turning up at the beach at Gallipoli only to find the fighting ended 98 years ago.

They are all the university common room types who sit around in tutorials discussing Dickensian factories and slums, and the ‘Gilded Age’ excesses of wealth and think “OMG thath isth so cool, let’s change it all comwade” – only to find that previous Labour governments sort of got there before them.

All very ‘Rik from the Young Ones’

Be under no illusions the foot stamping and sticking pins into dolls by Cunliffe, Robertson, Adern, Curran, Norman et al is real – they know (deep down) they are impotent and irrelevant and will spend their entire careers in opposition.

No Ministerial office they always dreamed of (where the cool kids who bullied them at school FINALLY realise how very important they are); no ‘Yes Minister, 3 bags full Minister’, no glory, no biographies written about them in the year 2054.

Their solution is to simply …. invent things and hope enough people are stupid enough to believe it.

I suspect David Shearer asked a researcher to “go and find some hungry people” – and it took the researcher 15 months to actually do so! (hunger having been eliminated with polio – way back yonder)

For every example Labour can ever come up with – there are 100,000 exceptions (e.g for every 1 employer exploiting workers, 100000 employers are not) – and this angers very desperate people who lie awake at night knowing a lifetime of dreams are slipping away.

Schumpeter in “Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy” heaps scorn on the Marxist mantras of the working classes “clanking chains” and endless entrapment in exploitation. Schumpeter said they are all far too busy trying to become “petit bourgeoise” to bother trying to take over the means of production.

    • rockape

Well said tb. Labour like the Greens can only exist in the land of disasters, take that away and they have nothing!

    • captainnotsosensible

      Well said Sir

    • Kimbo

My step daughter is currently doing Sociology 101.

I thought that there would be at least some academic rigour, that it wouldn’t be like the apparent cliches you have suggested.

I was wrong. It is worse. Truly horrid

  • Dave

Hmmm I think Thomas Sowell just summed up Kosh/TeachersRock/Gayguy/Meg/Paul very well. Poor chap must have spent at least 2 minutes listening to him.

  • rockape

Welcome back from the darkside Cam!

  • cows4me

Liberalism has to be a mental disorder, how else can you explain a group of people that simply refuse to acknowledge that every attempt to implement their ideology has resulted in an both environmental and humanitarian disasters. There’s just no helping these retards.

  • meow

You’ll never hear the Left complain that there are too many black 100m sprinters, or too many gorgeous long legged blonde Russian woman high jumpers, etc etc. They always cherry-pick the over/under representation stats to suit themselves.

  • BR

The left has as it’s core philosophy, the idea that without government regulation and intervention in the free market, the rich would get richer and the poor would get poorer until there were a very few obscenely rich moguls who owned almost everything, with the remainder of the population living in extreme poverty and barely able to survive.

This myth can be destroyed in one sentence.

A broke and destitute population is bad for business.

    • IWantToBeLikeMallardOneDay

China’s capitalist exploiters will learn that lesson in a few years’ time and they’ll face the wrath of a population who’ve been raised to deify mass murdering commies. As Marx said, give them enough rope and they’ll hang themselves.

I have noticed, over the years, the lack of fat, white, middle-aged men in the Olympic 100m final. As a fat, white, middle-aged man I find this discrimination incredibly offensive. I am therefore starting up a study (taxpayer funded obviously) into how we can get more fat, white, middle-aged men into the 100m final. I suspect that the results of my study will show that legislation is the only answer (I say suspect, but really I know as I’m writing the study, but if I finish the study off now then I’ll lose out on four years of taxpayer funding and overseas travel).
