A new reader emails

This is why I write and edit this blog, assisted of course by the pod of volunteers:

Dear Mr. Slater

Until this scandal involving Len Brown I had no idea of your existence, but since the story broke I am visiting your blog a few time a day. Thank you for doing this job.

My family and I have been living in a communist country till its collapse in 1989. We know exactly how sick the left is. Of course you can’t compare Labour or the Greens with the communist parties from the former satellites countries of the USSR, but nevertheless they are kind of their offsprings. Although in our opinion the Greens are their creation.

Unfortunately the message of the centre right is hard to penetrate as the left has highjacked almost all the media and the wings of the left have grown even bigger with the unfortunate election and reelection of Barack Obama.

It is probably thank to people like you that the centre right has a chance to govern.

With respect

    what a GC.
    i agree completely.

  • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

Unfortunately Centre-Right is going to lose big time in 2014 and will be out of power for the next nine years because of a crap political system called MMP.

    • Kimbo

That’s a little unfair – MMP was created so that previously unemployed people with no specific skill set could go straight from the dole to running a country.

      • Jmac

Almost spat my coffee out. Gold.

      • Tom

Disqus needs a ‘double upvote’ facility haha

      • Whanga_Cynic

        Brilliant!

      • Callum

Ha ha classic. Although you shouldn’t be so harsh on Paula Bennet. She’s doing a wonderful job.

        • Kimbo

Agree on Paula, Shame about others that have moved directly from WINZ to the Koru Club.

      • Col

That is the best comment of the year, hang in Kimbo, we like your style.

        • Kimbo

Cheers Col, Stepped up from Voyeur to Contributor :-)

          • Kimbo

But you stole my name, you bastard!!

Brilliant comment btw. May have to retire my moniker in honour of it.

          • philbest

How can you get two the same name on the same site? Cam?

          • Steve (North Shore)

Same way you can get 2 or more Steves, hence ‘Steve (North Shore)
            Can we fix it?

          • philbest

Plenty of sites, when you are trying to create a new ID; when the name you are going to use (eg “Phil”) is a common one, will give you a message. “this ID is already taken”.
Does WhaleOil not do this? Can someone else also create an ID and post as “PhilBest”?
This leaves scope for quite a lot of mischief making; I suspect it can’t be true.

          • Kimbo

“The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work… when you go to church… when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth”.

Or to quote the other Kimbo (who is also a sage to be listened to with respect), “Fuckem”.

          • Kimbo

Not so. No mischief. I’ve been posting my incoherent rantings around here for about two years. In contrast, the new succinct and witty Kimbo just turned up. Maybe is has something to do with discus being at arms length from the Whale Oil site.

          • Kimbo

            Are you quoting Winston Peter?

          • FredFrog

            No, it’s fucked

          • Kimbo

            Fuckem.

          • Kimbo

Voted up by the other Kimbo

          • Kimbo

Im confused, but another good day banging a guy that is not treating his significant role seriously enough and (I think) having the time of his life and taking the piss out of 1 5M Aucklanders who, unlike him. are concerned about unresolved local issues.

          • Guest

I dont know whether I me or you and so do others. (New Kimbo)

          • Kimbo

HOT Damn, Whats the chance of 2 Kimbo’s ! Always the peacemaker Im prepared to share, is that a site glitch or what ?

          • Kimbo

Let’s agree to join forces and conquer!!!!!

Key & Co had the opportunity to “reform” MMP but the soft cocks were too scared.
Key & Co had the opportunity to “reform” Union big business bagmen (thanks for the line Mallard) funding the NZ labour Party but the soft cocks were too scared.
Key & Co had the opportunity to perform root & branch surgery on the welfare state but the soft cocks were too scared.

Key & Co will be remembered for their lost opportunities as much as for their astute financial sailing through troubled waters after the GFC.

      • blokeintakapuna

Timing is everything. If Key/National had attempted to rein in the unions and the voter-bribes Labour handed out, whilst dealing with the GFC and Chch earthquakes fallout – the leftie media would twist things and use it as a bloody big 4×2 of which to clobber National with.
Just look at the performance the likes of Rudman is spewing forth today because the message goes against the narrative they’re trying to spruik.
        There’s always a 3rd term…

        • Patrick

BIT, i will concede on the welfare reform, that would have been difficult during the GFC but there were plenty wanting a reform of MMP and lots of disappointment when National bottled it. Requiring the unions to collect their own subscriptions would have created some noise from the lefties but so what, National had enough political capital to force it through. Now look at them, Banks has kneecapped them and they are now toothless and will be thrown out come 2014.

          • Rex Widerstrom

Precisely, Patrick. Reforming MMP was eminently do-able. The populace were ready for it, and would have supported it, but I assume Key and his advisors listened to the beltway elitists (including those in their own party) who realised they’d never win election on their own merits and wanted their seat on the gravy train preserved in perpetuity.

Ad because it would have improved the quality of governance and thus positively affected outcomes across a range of policies, to me it rates as the biggest lost opportunity of all.

      • philbest

Not the only things the “Tories in Name Only” have been too spineless to do. Don Brash would have had us back in ANZUS; out of Kyoto; restored the Air Force; restarted logging on the West Coast; ended the Treaty Industry; to name but a few things. He was the last of real Toryism in NZ National.

  • Patrick

Until the USSR was mentioned I thought “redacted” was referring to good old NZ.

    • Callum

That reminds me, anyone tried Reductil. I hear its great for weight loss but can cause depression.

      • Never in the dark…..

Lobotomy can do the same, what’s your point?

      • Patrick

Pretty sure I know where you are going with that, why don’t you organise a meet up with WO?

      • Steve (North Shore)

I hardly ever give a downtick – I consider it childish.
But today you get a downtick for being childish – now fuck off

  • Tom

Good to hear. I doubt he is the only one. Keep up the good work, and keep the bastards honest!

  • Hawkesbayallday

I’ve also joined the whale oil bandwagon, not jumping anytime soon either. Cheers, Cam!

  • cows4me

Your emailer needs a medal. The left long for communism where their elite can live like pigs in swill and the masses have every second of their lives run by the state. This country is always sitting on a razor edge between being free or being ruled by despots. Where the takers believe it’s their right to live off the efforts of others and class warfare is the name of the game. The left are evil, make no mistake about it.

  • middleagedwhiteguy

The sense of entitlement from the left is precisely why Len and his ilk seem to think themselves able of acting in such a manner that Len has with impunity, whereas in NZ they hold the right to a higher standard, as evidenced by the faux outrage over Richard Worth and Don Brash.

  • Col

    They would know.

  • Callum

Nothing like posting the thoughts of some random nutter to keep up the troops morale.
Jolly good. Of course if this same person didn’t happen to agree with our opinions we would instantly write him of as a raving and crazed communist but because he validates our world view well, stick it up there, it must prove we’re right!!! right?
Anyways, keep up the good work and high standards Cam.

    • Bunswalla

Between his email and your comment, I can tell who the random nutter is.

      • cows4me

        Very good sir.

    • philbest

Shows how sick someone is in the head when they talk in this way about someone who has actually lived under Communism, and repudiates it.

      • cows4me

No Callum and his mates have a more caring and sharing kind of communism or so they would have you believe. You know what is really sad about the left and it’s practitioners, they just can’t get it through their thick heads that their beloved ideology has caused untold misery throughout the world. But no they know better and they take great delight shoving their shit down everyone’s throat.

        • philbest

It is sad indeed if no amount of the second thoughts and indictments of Communism from fine writers like Leszek Kolakowski and Alan Charles Kors and Anthony Daniels and David Horowitz have convinced them. A collection of writings in a book entitled “The God that Failed” is worth getting too.
It triggers moderation if you post too many links; but I recommend the following essays:
Theodore Dalrymple: “And So, He Became a Communist”

David Horowitz: “The Road to Nowhere” (an open letter to Ralph Miliband)
Alan Charles Kors: “Can there be an ‘After Communism'”?

Leszek Kolakowski: “My Correct Thoughts on Everything” (an open letter to Edward Thompson)
The havoc and misery and murder wrought by Communism everywhere it has been tried is not a bug, it is a feature. People who think otherwise are devoid of basic common sense. How can an increasing proportion of the population have their assets nationalised without violence? It never stops at any percentage, it always runs out of scapegoats. “The Black Book of Communism” is a helpful read too; at least the introduction and preface if you can’t stomach thousands of pages of history on a nation-by-nation basis.
Of course the neo-Communists will rationalise this by arguing that the victims of Communism were always themselves guilty participants in a history of worse “oppression”; and/or were “terrorists” who dared to oppose utopia in favour of the unspeakably evil status quo.
Western civilisation has always been too kind to these poisonous traitors in our midst. It would have been worth any amount of tarnishing of the brand of free democratic civilisation to have quickly tossed into jail everyone of the ilk of Marcuse, Derrida, Foucault, Adorno, Horkheimer, Fromm and all the other Commie Quislings who have instead been given tenured positions in western universities in the name of ideological freedom. The gaining of ground by the ideologies spread by these people is a guarantee of the end of ideological freedom, not its continued perpetuation.

          • cows4me

Yep give the bastards a slice and they will take the whole loaf.

  • blokeintakapuna

    Dear new Reader(s),
I’m sure Whale and crew will welcome you all to the site once things calm down a little and they have some time, but until then, as a regular reader myself, I’m sure all will wish to extend a warm welcome to you all – where all comments and thoughts are welcomed, encouraged and often debated.

Differing opinions are highly encouraged also – and are always “tested” for veracity.
So pull up a chair, help yourself to the free beer and popcorn.. and let your fingers do the talking!

    • Dave

I Second that!!, plus a note of caution to new readers.

That SCS bloke/sheila, before lambasting him/her with a red hot poker, or wanting to scratch their eyes out, as BIT says, sit back and read a few posts from him, its pure gold.

      • Can’t say as much for Meg though. Best avoided – like all teachers!

        • Dave

As in most cases, the pupils outshine the teachers within 5 years of leaving school ……

    • Patrick

One point WOBH – fix this friggin caching issue, deleting my browser history every few hours is becoming painful.

      • Bunswalla

Think how Len feels Patrick, he’s been trying to delete two years’ history in one go!

  • Dave

This is what I like about the Blog. Cam / WO posts things as they are, no whitewashing or sanitizing of FACTS, just as it is, with some personality added for good reading. There is also a good balance, the right Politicians who do the wrong thing get to see sunlight here as well, unlike at the Stranded.

The MSM seem to think, they can publish a diet of manufactured and bullshit news, to drones who believe anything they write, thankfully the addition of Blogs, and reader / viewer feedback and comments are seeing these shonky publications and media held up to sunlight. The main offenders, TV3 and Granny herald, are slowly and surely being held to account, and falling ratings are only the first sign. Media hacks such as Campbell, MacCarten and Bradbury certainly are on notice, remember Katherine Viners refreshing article Cam posted……. I wait to see who will be the first confirmed victim of their own bullshit.

    • philbest

I was gobsmacked after a few years of absence from the blogosphere (gave up) to discover that WOBH (a small alternative RW blog last I knew) had gained such a following that it was the biggest alternative media in NZ. Now I am fired up with enthusiasm about the possibility of making a difference after all.

  • conwaycaptain

I see the Old Aged Pensioner of Herne Bay, one Winston Peters, reckons he will DOUBLE the number of MPs at the next election and become the King Maker again.
Now there was a Bloke in the UK called Warwick the Kingmaker during the wars of the Roses. He met a grisly end.
BTW it has only been called the Wars of the Roses in modern times. Before it was called the Wars of the Cousins which may be more accurate. Henry V11 who won had actually no legitimate claim to the throne.

  • Mr_Blobby

When do we get to see the good stuff, the abusive ones.

  • Steve R

Its unbelievable that we forget just how lucky we are here in this great country yet we also forget how dump most of our fellow voters are .
I really fear that the lies and fake promises of the greens and labour will win out this election .
The current government has worked hard to stop us being like the USA ( we don’t need to up the level of credit just to pay the interest on what we already owe )
Ive been reading Thomas Sowells book basic economics and it will show you the very results of everything the left are promising . Needless to say we will end up like America or worse .
Just look at how the left have run our great city . Len has proven so good at managing money that he’s not aloud to have a company credit card . He has taken the city debt ( A debt that has taken almost 150 years to generate ) and almost doubled it in three years . Just the first three years of a new united council that was supposed to be leaner and more efficient .
However that was a great letter to you Cam and if those folks ever come down here to Auckland it would be great to have a beer with them .

  • john

hi Cameron , what else has Len been up to .He sames to have a deep seated like for different cultures . I know all the guys guy good old len .but really this is a grown man . He should of just gone to the pelican club in newton , the girls there are as good as his root . and i would think there wont be any fraudsters there .
    kind regards

  • philbest

Excellent. The writer of that communication would appreciate something said by the 1970’s KGB defector Yuri Bezhmenovsky, regarding Eastern Europe’s useful idiots to the Commies during the times when the outcome was in doubt. He said, “some people never stop believing until the boot heel smashes down upon their own face”.
