With our democratic system and freedoms, we have a system of checks and balances where the 4th Estate Media were supposed to hold the elected officials to account and keep them in check by the implied and very real threat that mis-deeds and political corruption would be reported on – and then the elected official would be called to account and answerable to the public.
That’s how it was supposed to work. A symbiotic and parasitic and somewhat confrontational relationship.
As the need for “Scoops” became ever more pressing and deadlines can’t wait – the relationship and power dynamics between the media watchdog and politicians changed… without much knowledge of those not involved in either the media or politics.
Today; we see the situation where our democratic system of checks and balances between these 2 adversarial camps has become nothing less than a cosy “related party” club for the political and media elite where the narrative on any given topic is open to negotiation – like how we all are witnessing with the Herald’s defence of a compromised Mayor.
When the Media Watchdog half of the democracy equation has become a complicit lapdog of the politicians, performing tricks such as “roll over” “beg” and “get away back” at the behest of a disgraced elected individual – it’s time our democratic systems and framework was revisited.
How is it even possible please Governor General that the self-regulating media body that is supposed to up-hold media standards – ensuring the media keep the elected officials and politicians in “check” – how is it that Press Council actually have 2 x EPMU union representatives / Labour Party insiders on the Press Council? Is that not similar to having the Mafia oversee the judiciary?
Mr. Governor General – is having political funders of one of our main political parties, imbedded into the very watchdog charged with overseeing how our democracy works and keeping the very same politicians honest… is that not a huge risk to NZ’s democratic systems and political integrity?

It is unfortunate and disappointing when people mislead their
viewers by painting entire programs with the brush of a few bad
apples, without putting them in the context of the thousands of
individuals who receive benefits appropriately, and for whom they are a
    vital lifeline.

Absolutely. I’ve been unemployed three times but only been on the dole once. The other two times I survived on applying my mechanical skills in the garage/driveway but that third time I was in need and it was a big hand UP. I took the first (part time) job that came my way and things got better from there. Being unemployed doesn’t mean you’re lazy but having been unemployed I did get to meet some people who were, most of whom drank like fish. About that time I thought it might be a good idea for Govt agencies to pay benefits through direct payments to landlords (or banks for mortgages) and dish out food stamps. Giving lazy bastards cash is just stupid and if I (and my wife) can be subjected to random alcohol and drug testing why can’t beneficiaries?
