Webster apologises, Left wing smear about conspiracy unravelling

One of the more outrageous smears, spread I might add by someone who should know better, was that Mark Mitchell was involved in some sort of conspiracy to unseat Len Brown.

It was a distraction…put about by people associate with Len Brown…the media salivated over it, so desperate are they that there is a conspiracy…and it was wrong.

Penny Webster has now issued a grovelly apology for her role in the fuss.

Auckland City Councillor Penny Webster has issued a public apology to National MP Mark Mitchell for embroiling him in the Len Brown scandal.

In a statement, Webster said she regretted comments by Mitchell about “skeletons” in Mayor Len Brown’s closet had been used “for political cheap shots” and character assassination.

It was revealed last week Brown’s camp were alerted to a sex scandal by comments made by Mitchell to Webster.

“I have decided to make a public statement to set the record straight when I saw him having to defend attacks on his integrity and character by Labour MPs in the Parliamentary debating chamber last night,” Webster said.

“The comment Mark made to me should never have been used for political cheap shots or a character assassination.

”It was not made at a cocktail party or as part of idle gossip. I was in a business meeting with Mark over electoral and council matters when our conversation turned to local government elections and the mayoral campaign. Mark made a passing comment, something like ‘scuttlebutt floating around for a while about the mayor having a skeleton in his closet. If there is a skeleton I hope that his wife and children know because families are always the victims in these sort of things’.”

Webster said she laughed, and said she was sure it wasn’t correct and Mitchell agreed with her.

“It was a generic conversation between him and I, and I deeply regret using his name in a later conversation with the mayor’s chief of staff.”

Pathetic spin by the left to try to dig their beloved NoShameLenBrown out of the hole that has been made by all his OWN doing…. Why is that so hard to see by these numpty idiots…

    • captainnotsosensible

…the beauty of the truth is it will come out eventually, no matter how long it takes…. It will not go away….they are just denying the inevitable at the moment. Once it becomes more painful to stick with Lenny than admit reality, they will change, just like dear Penny flip flop here.

Who’s the mayor’s chief of staff again and how much are we paying him ?

‘in comparison to other New Zealand mayors, the Mayor has enhanced responsibilities. These include promoting a vision for Auckland, providing leadership to achieve the vision, leading the development of council plans, policies and budgets, and ensuring effective engagement between Auckland Council and the people of Auckland.
The Mayor is also responsible for appointing the Deputy Mayor, establishing the committees of the governing body of Auckland Council and appointing the chairperson of each of these committees.
The Auckland Council legislation empowers the Mayor to staff an office for the purpose of meeting these extended responsibilities.
The Office of the Mayor has a significantly bigger role than any other mayoral office in New Zealand due to the scale of operation, strategic issues facing the region and the unique responsibilities conferred on the Mayor by legislation.
The Auckland Council Office of the Mayor includes planning, policy and consultation roles, and deals with day-to-day communication, correspondence, management the Mayor’s diary, and media relations. ‘

Is there any way we can get a sense of how much the mayor’s staff are costing us ?

    • captainnotsosensible

Try putting in an info request to the council I guess. Must be an org chart somewhere. From memory ( worked at ACC many years ago for a few months but couldn’t stand the dead wood and endless mtgs in nearby cafes) an approximate pay range for junior staff was $35-50k, senior admin / tech $60-85, execs $85-120 and most above that might be in the range $120-200k.

So a team of 1 deputy, 2 senior, 3 others ( wild guess nothing more) would be about $6-750k a year…just on salaries. Now add in admin, office rent, travel, PR!!, etc. easily a few million.

Or if you know someone friendly in finance there it will be in the annual budget ( albeit fudged).

Failing that with a bit of digging into the various “cost savings initiatives ” that consultants have been brought in to support ( I mean validate) over the years, their might be something in the pre / post project cost benefits calcs. But that might be a long shot.

The only problem with this law is that creates this large elected dictatorship but provides no equivalent opposition position. So once brown was elected he becomes a well funded behemoth that crushes any council opposition to his policy and directives.

Then ya wonder why corruption, nepotism, and sexual impropriety run rampant and are found breeding nicely in thr council chambers. WO has done more to bring some sunlight to murky lens dealings than all the other councilors put together

Eaxctly, the place is out of control anyway, immoral screwing over is the norm; of the motorist, the developer, the ratepayer, the 1st home buyer, etc etc

    • Patrick

Just think, if they gutted the place & threw out all the leeches that contribute nothing to the efficient provisioning of essential services there would be a whole tranche of money that could be spent on improving sewage & water systems, even mowing verges.

  • Chancey

It seems Mr Brown is still communicating in a squeaky voice from under his desk.

“Mr Brown remained unfazed by the findings yesterday, insisting Aucklanders understood the need for a compact city, but had the right to decide the best formula through submissions on the Unitary Plan which close on February 28.”

He insists we understand! Sanctimonious little prat.

We do understand Mr Brown. We know what we think and don’t need you to tell us. Now understand this. Go Away!!!

    • Bart67

I concur wholeheartedly Chancey, does anyone actually think that if Len Brown does not have sufficient common sense to manage his own life, what gives him the right to try and manage ours!

      • Chancey

his affliction maybe – Protection by the seven deadly sins of narcissism:

Shamelessness: Shame is the feeling that lurks beneath all unhealthy narcissism, and the inability to process shame in healthy ways.

Magical thinking: Narcissists see themselves as perfect, using distortion and illusion known as magical thinking. They also use projection to dump shame onto others.

Arrogance: A narcissist who is feeling deflated may reinflate by diminishing, debasing, or degrading somebody else.

Envy: A narcissist may secure a sense of superiority in the face of another person’s ability by using contempt to minimize the other person.

Entitlement: Narcissists hold unreasonable expectations of particularly favorable treatment and automatic compliance because they consider themselves special.

Failure to comply is considered an attack on their superiority, and the perpetrator is considered an “awkward” or “difficult” person. Defiance of their will is a narcissistic injury that can trigger narcissistic rage.

Exploitation: Can take many forms but always involves the exploitation of others without regard for their feelings or interests. Often the other is in a subservient position where resistance would be difficult or even impossible. Sometimes the subservience is not so much real as assumed.

Bad boundaries: Narcissists do not recognize that they have boundaries and that others are separate and are not extensions of themselves. Others either exist to meet their needs or may as well not exist at all. Those who provide narcissistic supply to the narcissist are treated as if they are part of the narcissist and are expected to live up to those expectations. In the mind of a narcissist there is no boundary between self and other.

        • philbest

Exactly; and that applies in spades to Len’s whole policy approach, not just his “private life”. The people who vote for him are just as besotted and masochistic as his wife.

    • ratesarerevolting

He’s all for a compact city as long as it doesn’t impact on his digs !

The man’s hubris and hypocrisy knows no boundaries.

      • philbest

This can’t be repeated too often. Those digs are, by the way, on a section of around 1 acre. “Compact living for thee but not for me”.

One is reminded of the Nomenklatura in the USSR.

  • LesleyNZ

I guess MP’s and AKLD Councillors won’t be sharing too much with Penny Webster now. She needs to stop and think before espousing.

  • blokeintakapuna

The cynic in me seems to think she’s seen which way the political winds of fortune are blowing… And she’s heading for a safe harbour…

    • captainnotsosensible

      Spot on.

    • LesleyNZ

    • Cadwallader

Eureka! There’s nothing like a soft-brained leftie to be able to emulate a scurrying rat.

  • LesleyNZ

But if this is what she believed then why did she go running to Len? “Webster said she laughed, and said she was sure it wasn’t correct and Mitchell agreed with her.”
Wonder if she thinks it is correct now?

    • GazzW

At that point in time she wanted to have a bob both ways. Webster is just a typical smalltime parish-pump politician. Big frog, little pond.

So why did you shoot off your big fucking mouth woman, explaining is losing, uderr the bus.

  • middleagedwhiteguy

The combined tame media – mayor’s office spin on this whole matter is starting to unravel.

To me the biggest indicator of media/mayoral collusion in this matter was the changing of the headline on the Herald website. A common saying is that you must know something of the truth in order to lie convincingly. It almost seems that someone high up in the Herald knew that the ‘Full Disclosure” that had been claimed by Len was somewhat different to the facts at hand.

    • williamabong

The only person in the country that believes the bullshit and spin from Lens office seems to be Len. His position as mayor is totally unworkable annd there is no way back for him, no matter how hard the ratepayer funded spin weasels try.
Perhaps part of the reason for massive effort being put in by these professional liars is two minutes after Len gets the arse card they get theirs, and that will be a seven figure saving for the city, won’t that buy a lot of kerb and channel.

Exactly, one of the best things that could come out of this, is for the tame media to be utterly exposed to everyone; and WhaleOil to become NZ’s “Drudge Report”, a serious new media followed by serious numbers of people.

  • Col

I think Penny is trying to distance herself from Lenny, before he takes the walk?

    • Whafe

Yep, all part of the plays from the spin Dr’s that we the ratepayers are paying for.

  • BigDes

Actually, I reckon good on her for apologising, it will help Mitchell out no end. At least she’s manned up and owned her shit.

  • dilligaf2013

Disappointing that strength of character and intestinal fortitude are such a rare comodity at the Auckland council

    • Acid

She’s trying to save her ass and future career prospects by backpedalling faster than a vegan in a slaughterhouse. Can’t blame her really.

  • paddles83

Copy of an email I sent the weasel councillor last evening after reading Stuff, looking forward to a response but not really expecting to get one.

    While apologise now

You deliberately put it into the public arena for your own benefit and are now running like the other rats in the ACC.

Climb back in your hole you bottom feeder, call yourself a councillor, you don’t deserve the title.

    Always remember KARMA

  • Dick Brown

Good on Penny for fronting up I guess, although in the business she is in this breach of confidence would have hurt her immensely; hence the mea culpa

    • disqus_Aa7kWsb7Fp

The possibility of a libel suit concentrates the mind wonderfully

    • williamabong

Once again you’re an egg and an apologist for the terminally stupid, she shot her gums off because she thought it might shove herself further into the trough, then she worked out she’d fucked up big-time so we went into damage control, to late Penny the damage is done now you have to live with it.
Trust is a big thing in politics, and she may now find herself in a group of one.

      • Lonnie12

omfg “shot her gums off” best laugh I’ve had all week, thanks :)

  • MarcWills

As I posted last night, Webster is Councillor for ACC representing the Rodney area of the city (Mark Mitchell’s electorate). When the nasty party started the usual smearing tactics under the privileges of Parliament, she realised her political career was on its way down the gurgler. If the ‘gossip’ she speaks of nessesitated her running to the Office of the Mayor to report in, she knows more than she is letting on.

Ass covering in overdrive is my impression.

  • kehua

Fat arsed cow should have learned to keep her trap shut by now, seems the only thing bigger than her arse is her mouth. Not a good combination when you are blessed with a brain the size of a pea.

    • Now, don’t hold back – tell us what you really think.

  • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

Bros – At the end of the day, the truth of the matter is – Lentils Brown is still mayor, he is looking forward to summer and BBQ and beach, moving Auckland forward and generally having a good time. By simply sticking around he has blunted everything thrown at him. He is a WINNER. Absolutely no damage done.

    • captainnotsosensible

He hasn’t stuck around, he’s run away and hidden every time it looks like something new is coming out of the woodwork. And he’s left his diminishing spin team to either (a) distract by running attacks on others (b) bleat about how much of a victim Len is (c) say absolutely nothing at all.

This will take time..but eventually he will have to show up to council meetings, to the press, to interest groups, and the public. What he’s done he’s done, and his past is going to get him, one way or another.

  • Azeraph

You know he’s doing something that has not been tried. I think he’s trying to set a precedent.
