Bill English moves to list only

National is certainly showing the way for other parties in how to renew while in government. Labour is looking like going into next years election with the same old tired faces, like Phil Goff and Annette King amongst many others.

Bill English has decided to move to the list freeing up a nice safe seat for some renewal.

Deputy Prime Minister Bill English has announced he is stepping down as the MP for Clutha-Southland after eight terms but will seek re-election next year on National’s list.

English said the demands of representing one of New Zealand’s largest electorates required considerable travel and time away from his family.

“I have therefore decided that it is a good time to strike a better balance between my family and government commitments,” he said today.

“It has been a privilege to represent the electorate since 1990 and I have particularly enjoyed working for my constituents.

“I will continue as MP for Clutha-Southland until the election next year. I am strongly committed to the re-election of a John Key-led government in 2014 and to my roles as deputy prime minister and minister of finance. We have made considerable progress since our election in 2008 and there is still plenty of work to do.”

English said he met with his electorate committee in Gore today to tell them of his decision and thanked his constituents and staff.

There will be an avalanche of people seeking selection for this seat…as it is a job for life.

Let’s hope National uses this opportunity for some renewal.

  • Pathetic how the left are saying that all the national mp’s leaving are “abandoning” John Key. . . Sadly the lefts mantra of mp for life blinds them to the need for rejuvenation.

  • Toryboy

So instead of spending 3 or 4 days per year in Southland, from 2014 it will be none? (I am sure everyone will notice! haha!)
I think this is a good move and he should have done it about 10 years ago.

    • You are so pathetic

      • Toryboy

I am not the only Southlander who only knows Bill English from television

        • Eiselmann

According to Mr Cunliffe you are the only Southlander

          • Toryboy

Ha ha! I have a house here and in Auckland, where I am sort of based for business reasons.
Cunliffe clearly spends no time in Southland (or Taranaki) and is talking rubbish; these days the streets of Invercargill are a hell of a lot busier than when I was a boy.

        • Michael

I live in an urban area, I never see our Labour MP. Probably because he is too busy rooting everything he can find.

          • Teletubby

So you live in Lower Hutt then

          • Richard McGrath

            Or perhaps Palmerston North?

    • peterwn

It would be more than that. In the pre MMP days it was the norm – The PM and ministers could come from far flung electorates and had to get back to them best they could from time to time – and no aeroplanes. They were expected to live in Wellington with their families as that was their workplace, but were expected to maintain their ‘seat’ in the electorate. That is why there were ‘ministerial houses’ and why each minister had two ‘company cars’ one in the electorate and one for Wellington use on top of the CR limos. The opposite applied to backbenchers – the families stayed in the electorates and the MP’s stayed in Wellington just for sitting days. Now many list MP’s live in Wellington while ministers commute more to their home towns especially Auckland than they did in the past.

There will be lots of bloody minded National members down there who will not be dictated to by anyone as to whom their next candidate/MP will be. If John Key, Peter Goodfellow, etc has visions of who the next candidate should be, they need to get out and convince the locals as to the merits of anyone being ‘put up’.

  • Col

The one thing with National MPs is they do a good hard days work, and make way for new blood. not like the labour MPs who think they should stay until they die, that’s why the Labour party is slipping away with coffins in tow.

  • Apolonia

Steal the headlines for the weekend. Sorry Mr Cunliffe

  • thor42

Very good move. Even more rejuvenation – great to see.

Gee, Labour are going to look so *old and tired* when the election comes around.

King, Goff, Mallard, Moroney, Fenton….. what a joke!

  • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

“Rats leaving the sinking ship” – Messiah….

    • thor42

Pfffft…. if anyone thinks that a lineup that includes Goff, King, Mallard, Moroney and Fenton is “dynamic”, they need to have their head read.

Tired old hacks, the lot of them.

  • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

Rumours are Curryleaf is going to establish “Kiwisure” – A government insurance scheme……Watch this space….

    • James Growley

I suppose he will have the Norman lunatic printing money to underwrite it then.

  • Bad__Cat

I wasn’t overly impressed by Bill English as leader of the National Party, but in hindsight I’m glad he didn’t resign in a huff as others have done. Nor did he sit in the back benches just to collect his pay and make poisonous statements.

He has been (and is) a brilliant Finance Minister and a loyal Deputy. We’ll done, Bill.

    • john Doe

Very well said Bad cat….pss can u please piss on toms leg. Thank you.

  • Tom

English and his brother Conor are both class 1 f-wits

    • Col

      Why you say that?

      • Tom

I’ve met both of them and they are tossers.

Both look to other people to do all their work because they can’t

        • Col

So they are just normal people like you and I, getting other people to do the work for them, wish I could do that more often then I could have a couple of days off for a change.

          • Tom

The difference is you can do your job

  • Mad Dog

So….at long last, Billy English is ending the LIE that he lives in Southland, even though none of his kids has ever gone to school anywhere except in Wellington, and his wife has only ever been a doctor in Wellington and NEVER in Southland.

I guess he finally got sick of quite correctly being labelled a bullshit artist!

  • Richard McGrath

So Billy boy will be a scum list MP.
