A former school principal facing historic sex abuse charges in Northland helped set up a Christian school in Auckland in the 1980s, ONE News can reveal.

In 1988, Raymond Melrose was filmed at the opening of a Christian school in Auckland. He went on to teach for 17 years at Kaikohe Christian School in Northland and served as principal.

He was stood down late last year when the sex abuse allegations first came to light.

But the school has kept quiet until now.

Chairman of the school’s board of trustees Mike Norman told ONE News today that it has been “a frustrating year” because he could only ask “so much information” of police.

“And actually I couldn’t give as much information as I wanted to to the staff and community,” he said.

Melrose faces 10 charges against school age boys, many of them serious. The charges date back to the 1960s and ’70s when he was a teacher at an Auckland school.
