The Huddle

I was on Larry Williams show The Huddle  last night with Josie Pagani.

Our topics were:

The Air New Zealand sale. I think Labour’s got a slightly short memory on this one, as under their watch they tried to flog off some shares as well. It’s also a very different “asset” as such than the other ones we’re selling.

Then we’ve had CHOGM and apparently we should have been rude to the host and dressed them down over Sri Lanka’s human rights record. I’m not sure that it would have made a blind bit of difference anyway. But apparently for being polite we were given an elephant!

Is there any pressure on John Key to discuss human rights abuses with Obama and Cameron too?
Or is pressure only applied when it is a third world country?

    • Pita

I’m sure that human rights issues were very high on the agenda when the Labour Government signed up to a free trade agreement with China.

    • Whanga_Cynic

Let’s not forget our mates across the Tasman. They’ve been amongst the worst for decades. OOOps, trade.

  • Toryboy

Yes the sale of Air NZ shares is wrong – unless Labour is in Government; rather like how we should be rude to our hosts – unless Labour is in Government.

This is similar to other matters – we should invade Fiji (except when Labour is in Government); we should demand full rights for NZers living in Australia (except when Labour is in Government); proposed free trade agreements are bad for New Zealand (except when Labour is in Government)

    The hypocrisy is breathtaking!

Do not be surprised if National’s feebleness over not abolishing MMP results in Deputy Prime Minister Norman in 2015 saying “oh we need to sell NZ Post because it is going broke which we will do after hosting the Sri Lankan PM and abolishing the ETS”

    • ” rather like how we should be rude to our hosts – unless Labour is in Government.”

You have to give Helen Clark credit for having the balls to shit all over disrespect the Royal Family multiple times now.

Not done her career any harm either.

I remember when she tried that back in 2002 on the Queen’s last visit to NZ; tried some sneaky talk about NZ becoming a Republic.

The Queen went on an unplanned walkabout in central Auckland – and 50,000 people spontaneously turned out to see her! hahahaha!

Clark shut up pretty quick after that.

  • “Let me finish Cam”??????

Can that be reciprocated please Josie? lol

JP understands nothing about the airline industry. Now is the perfect time for the Government to take back some money from Air NZ and selling 20% of it’s shares to do so, will make no difference to the future of the national carrier whatsoever. The airline will grow and perform based on good management, great employees and great product – not government cash floating around in the coffers. As far Russel the Australian goes, he knows even less. Air NZ’s profits and performance have never been less of a focus, just because the government had a 73% share. It’s quite bizarre to think that a 20% change in the mix of ownership from NZ public to NZ private, will suddenly have a negative impact on airfares, routes serviced and staff welfare. All those factors are BAU for an airline to manage regardless of ownership.

    Nice finish too Cam.

    Labour Party YAWN!
So looking forward to going to the zoo with my grandson to see this little elephant and the other one. They will become the highlight of a zoo trip. Here is a nice song about the Auckland Zoo:

“We are going to the zoo, zoo, zoo and you can come too, too, too………..

Josie makes the same error that Mike Williams did on NatRadio on Monday morning. She conflates a high share price with high dividends. If you are going to sell, the selling while the price is high is a GOOD thing. Selling at a low price is a BAD thing. Surely even the socialists can understand this advanced economic concept?

  • cows4me

I hope it’s a socialist elephant, from what I’ve been told socialists are only paid peanuts.

  • surfisup

jeez cam, you’re letting josie run away a bit . She just won’t stop.

  • LesleyNZ

Is this share float going to be done the same way as the power companies? I got an email about Mighty River and Meridian share float and how to register and pay for the shares but nothing on Air NZ float. I have been away so maybe I have missed something.

Government shouldnt have their fingers in any pies that the private sector can do better
