Labour choosing the popular path again…

Labour sure knows how pick positions…as usual they are on the wrong side of the issue.

Labour appears to be inching closer towards republicanism, with delegates at its annual conference in Christchurch giving the green light to a proposal to hold a binding referendum on whether to ditch the monarchy on the death of the Queen.

At yesterday’s conference the party agreed to send a remit on the proposal from prospective Wairarapa candidate Kieran McAnulty, who is also treasurer of the Republican Movement, to a full vote from delegates today. Sources say it is likely to pass without dissent.

The move comes as a new poll shows a small majority of New Zealanders are in favour of such a referendum.

The Republican Movement poll, conducted by pollsters Curia, showed 47 per cent of New Zealanders supported the idea of a referendum on the Queen’s death, with 44 per cent against and 9 per cent uncertain.

A poll in June on support for a republic found 40 per cent support to 53 per cent against.

Stuff shows how out of touch they are.

    Labour, 30%

    • timemagazine

30% is too much. How about 20% ?

      • Day Day

I’d prefer 11%. But it’s hard getting them below 25%, as you start to hit the rusted on ones at that point. They don’t know any better.

        • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

My street polling done last Sunday shows Labour will get between 48% – 52% on election day….

          • Steve (North Shore)

            You polled Maryanne Street?

          • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

Very funny Steve….you won’t be laughing on 30th November night when the results for ChC East results come out in favour of Curryleaf….

  • Josh Metcalfe

I’d much rather the royals than President Cunliffe

    • Nechtan

      Or Commissar Clark (shudder)

      • Sir Cullen’s Sidekick

She will be the first woman President of NZ…..

  • Dick Brown

They just don’t get it do they?

All Ive heard from them is dead fish politics.

No one cares about insurance or Republicanism; or at least no-one from their own constituents except the loonies.

I’m a royalist, the last thing I want is for New Zealand to become a republic, but if its going to happen , one day hopefully after I’m gone, it will be when the bulk of the population are actively calling for it, when our population are ready , not because some Republican flunky gets his crawls into a major party and convinces it that the time is right.. or more correctly waiting like vultures for the Queen to die for the time to be right.
Don’t get me started on binding referendum if they want to open that pandoras box, then they best get used to referendum on more police on the beat ,longer sentences and every other cause close to the hearts of many non gay unionist academics. President Cunliffe , ladies and gentlemen because that’s what he’ll want.

    • Mr_V4

Not to mention a lesser number of MPs.

    • Orange

Ouch! you’re right, they’re not making it about what is best for NZ, they’re making it about when a lady dies. that’s… bad..

    • James Growley

The Republican flunky is doing to the labour cretins what the Neo Nazi’s are doing to the Greens in the Fatherland.

  • Magor

First we have Aunty helen showing her lack of manners after meeting with a royal this past week, saying how quaint it is, then we have the contrived piece in the NZ Horrid and now labour at their conference – me thinks that a plot is been hatched to have Aunty helen installed as NZ President in a republic – one shudders at the thought….

    • Mr_V4

One and the same.Labour Party and left wing journalist hacks.

    • Honcho

Shows who is really running the left … still.

    • James Growley

      My thoughts exactly!

  • Morgy

Was thinking of writing something eloquent to illustrate my thoughts but, the guy is just a fucking dick.

That gets my vote – Cunliffe is a fucking dick.

NZ Labour – focussing on the things that matter. Does it matter to the little kid getting the shit kicked out of it on a regular basis, the teenager getting stoned everyday, the single Mum popping out another kid & spending the best years of her life on the welfare, the school dropouts destined for a lifetime on minimum wage. Do the organised crime syndicates peddling their methamphetamine care, the businesses struggling to keep their heads above water, all the while paying taxes to fund government schemes & the many other sectors of society that could do with some clear thinking, some innovative approaches to fixing issues in NZ. Do any of them really care that some old bint somewhere in the UK supposedly rules NZ. Hogwash Labour, how about solutions, how about fixing the things that matter, not creating an issue out of something that is totally irrelevant.

    • Day Day

Just wait until they eagerly jump into bed with the Greens. We’ll all be funding a host of big city feel good schemes at that point.

Labour are dumb as a sack of hammers with this. Maori signed the Treaty of Waitangi, a constitutional agreement with the British crown. The founding document of NZ. Get rid of the Crown, then there is no longer a Treaty.

  • Pete

I believe the only reason the Labour want this is to allow Clark back to run for president. If a referendum were held, and if a majority wanted a republic, Clark would be on the next flight out of NY ..she wouldnt be able to resist !
