2013 Worst Trade Association prize goes to…

At this time of year, people start to reflect on the year that’s coming to a close.

It’s also a time of year to start thinking about who gained some WO attention, and those who needed some disinfectant via sunlight on their activities.

So here’s to the start of the 2013 Whale Oil Awards.

But to kick off the 2013 Whale Oil Awards, I thought I’d start with the 2013 Worst Trade Association Prize. Regular readers won’t find it surprising that the recipient is …

Not only has the cartel like BSC achieved… oh that’s right nothing worthwhile for its members, it went off and attacked another sector of the economy that is growing – and a sector that it’s very own members are getting into.

Its jet-setting boss, El Presidente Patrick Lee-Lo, has even succeeded in creating a revolt among the BSC members – resulting in the establishment of the Fish Gang, and as a result,  Paddy is now under the pump to resign.

The BSC has said that it has advocated strongly both for, and against the Employment Relations Amendment Bill trying to demonstrate a suck and squeeze strategy of placating its union mates who hate the government and Simon Bridges, while trying to hoodwink its members into thinking the BSC is helping the offshore members of the Fish Gang.

In 2013, the BSC continued to demonstrate dodgy union tactics of tucking its members into paying a higher paying levy category, because it was too lazy to check the membership status of its 38 members.

The Truth also exposed the Registrar of Incorporated Societies finding that the BSC’s own accountants couldn’t retrospectively audit the 2010 and 2011 financial statement. The Owl was not impressed.

The BSC’s governance also deserves special mention for being dodgy for ignoring its own Society Rules – and fails to comply with Rule #19.

And just to top it  off, its boss Patrick Lee-Lo even tried – unsuccessfully, to get his arch nemeses Crest Clean’s comments before a Select Committee “expunged” from the record.

So, unless the WO army can suggest another trade association as incompetent and useless as the Building Services Contractors, these clowns are the clear winners by a long-shot.

As much at home writing editorials as being the subject of them, Cam has won awards, including the Canon Media Award for his work on the Len Brown/Bevan Chuang story.  And when he’s not creating the news, he tends to be in it, with protagonists using the courts, media and social media to deliver financial as well as death threats.

They say that news is something that someone, somewhere, wants kept quiet.   Cam Slater doesn’t do quiet, and as a result he is a polarising, controversial but highly effective journalist that takes no prisoners.

He is fearless in his pursuit of a story.

Love him or loathe him.  But you can’t ignore him.
