Cricket fans await an explosive Jesse Ryder

Always felt Ryder was the Whaleoil of cricket:  Does his own thing, doesn’t stand on ceremony, delivers results and most people consider him a controversial player that, due to his off-field antics, isn’t considered worthy to be on the team.

And yet, people love a winner.  And they love a bit of controversy.  Today, Ryder returns to Eden Park in the Boxing Day one dayer against the West Indies, and is expected to draw a good crowd.

As long as the forcasted showers don’t turn the day into the usual stop/start farce, we should be in for a good day’s cricket.

I do wonder if this is Ryder’s “last chance” to redeem himself in a larger sense.  Drop the off-field antics, drop some weight, and knuckle down to see what he can achieve for himself as well as the team.

One thing is for sure:  there are huge expectations on this man to deliver.  As a Black Caps fan it is a long time between drinks, and today, as we sit back and pick at yesterday’s leftovers, it would be good to get a win on the board in the last over with a few balls to spare.
