Life With Mike The Headless Chicken

Mike was a Famously Tough Fowl.  This is Mike a headless chicken which was published in Life Magazine 22 October, 1945, this a story .. well about a Headless Chicken.

Mike was a Rooster who lost his head in the usual rooster way..  Mrs L.A. Olson, the wife of a farmer in Fruita, Colo., 200 miles west of Denver, decided to have chicken for dinner.

Mr Olson took Mike to the chopping block and axed off his head.  Thereaupon Mike got up and soon began to strut around ….

What Mr Olson’s axe had done was to clip off most of the skull, but it left in tact one ear, the jugular vein and the base of the brain which controls the motor functions.

And when night came, he tucked his (missing) head beneath his wing, and went to sleep.  When Mike was still alive the next morning, the family took it as a miracle, and kept the rooster alive, feeding him grain and water directly into his esophagus via an eyedropper.  Fame soon came to Miracle Mike, the headless wonder chicken.  He was studied by the University of Utah, He was taken on a national tour.  Longtime Fruita residents described him as “a big, fat chicken who didn’t know he didn’t have a head.”

The rest is, as they say Poultry History …

Mike lived for 18 more months after losing his head, and he finally succumbed in a motel in the Arizona Desert in 1946 during one of his many appearances as a sideshow in the American Southwest.
