Who says pistols aren’t accurate?

I used to shoot pistols. I was very good…but then again I put literally thousands of rounds down range and shot almost every Saturday and Sunday.

I shot so much that I’d spend the rest of the week reloading.

One comment I always got when someone asked about pistol shooting was that they believed that pistols weren’t very accurate. My response was that pistols are in fact very accurate, it is the shooter who isn’t accurate.

I could put 6 rounds from my S&W model 10 into the target so that an old 50 cent piece could cover the holes…at 50m. I could do this because I’d shoot thousands of rounds at that range and I knew my load, my gun and the range intimately.

The professionals shoot even more and as a consequence can perform feats like this…A Glock .45ACP hitting a steel target at 215 years!

But then again this is Jerry Miculek…one of the greatest pistol shooters alive.

It takes an enormous amount of practice to do shots like that, but when they come off they are exhilarating. You can hear the excitement in his voice.

If you think 215 yard is cool…look at a 435 yard shot with a 9mm:

Shooting is all about confidence…practice…and maths (ballistics)

Is that “light years” ? That’s some distance. Jokes aside I’ve also put lots down the range and agree a pistol can be very accurate in the right hands.

I had a 2i/c who used to shoot a 9mm browning at Long range pistol Bisley. It had a leaf sight and you could range to 600 yards designed for trench warfare. He was good, very good.

Incredible. I am having trouble hitting the worlds largest magpie at about 80metres with an 1100fps .177 airrifle so I can appreciate how good these guys are. Mind you some of the blame could be the cheap chinese scope that seems to move after evefy shot.

Bloody magpies, they seem to have some sixth sense when it comes to weapons. The buggers are close enough to touch when you haven’t got one but even thinking about getting the rifle and they fly off out range.

      • Brian Smaller

That is so true. Hide it behind your back and they still seem to know you have a rifle.

    • Air rifles are wreckers of scopes…you need one designed and made for air rifles

Clamp rifle in a vice, or other absolutely solid device.
Shoot a round into a target.
adjust scope so cross-hairs match the slug hole.
Try a few times – -if scope still lining up with slug-hole, all good.
      otherwise, get a better scope.

Google 926 yard kill with long range pistol in Wyoming. I have seen smaller rifles!

All this talk of long range handgunning but not one mention of Elmer Keith?
