Liu and Labour lawyers’ letters

Labour going on the front foot demanding apologies from Liu may not have been the best strategy.  Never ask a question to which you don’t already know the answer is the Golden Rule, and now it seems that Labour are going to find out everything they really don’t want to know.

Millionaire businessman Donghua Liu has hired a high-profile Queen’s Counsel to deal with any legal action from the Labour Party.

Aucklander Paul Davison, QC, is heading a team of advisers for Liu reviewing the property developer’s records following the comments of David Cunliffe this week.

The Weekend Herald understands this includes more than 30 photographs taken over 18 months linking Liu to Labour, including a fundraiser at an Auckland restaurant and a trip to China, where he hosted a Cabinet minister in 2007.

Oh my… photos?  Photos of Labour people?  Photos of Labour people accepting money?

Remind me again:  they could find NO RECORDS of Liu having donated to the Labour party.  Am I rite?

Liu is also seeking to retrieve financial records held in China.

Financial records.  Photographs.

Labour Party general secretary Tim Barnett confirmed that a lawyer for the party had contacted Liu’s legal counsel but was yet to receive a substantive reply.

“The Labour Party has no dispute with Mr Liu because we have seen no evidence that he has published false information about us.”

And there, my dear readers, is the first sign of a MASSIVE back paddle:  “[Labour] have seen no evidence that [Liu] has published false information about us

Hasn’t the rhetoric changed?

Labour have accused Jared Savage of interviewing his keyboard.

Labour have accused the Herald of being National’s plaything (don’t we know how untrue that is!)

Labour have denied any records of Liu donations to the party.

and now…

Labour are saying nothing Liu has published so far is false?

Here’s a prediction:  Labour are going to have to deal with yet another dirty donation scandal.  They’ve, somehow, pocketed lots of financial support in addition to not declaring some (any?) of the benefits received in kind on the Pecuniary Interests register.

And more importantly.  This isn’t a smear.  This is a corrupt Labour party getting exposed for dodgy finances.
