Not sure if this qualifies as guest post material, fan mail or ‘ok to print’ letter to ed.

Old Media and Instant Accountability.

“You’d think they’d know better by now”, I thought to myself when I read about the “Woes of minimum wage”, the story in itself contradicted its own premise based on the maths alone and less than 60 seconds on Google and Facebook confirmed the whole thing was a farce and a lie.

As I put the details and links into the form on WOBH’s tip page, knowing dozens of others were likely doing the same themselves (and that Cam had probably already seen it anyway) it occurred to me that it was not so very long ago that an article like that would have had my blood boiling, my teeth gnashing and unholy cusswords being muttered into my morning coffee at the sheer unfairness of it all. That someone with as much power and reach to shape and influence opinion by telling us quite simply ‘the things that are happening right now’, would wield that power with, at best reckless or at worst deliberate, disregard for truth.

To hell with balance, just give me truth!

But my reaction to the article that morning was not dismay, no foul litany of four letter words, no deep breaths needed to calm myself. No my reaction was “Gotcha, you bastards”, followed by, as above, “You’d think they’d know better by now” (It may also have been “MAN THE HARPOONS!” but who would ever admit to that?). And sure enough we got ‘em, within hours the article was updated with his union affiliations and the lie of minimum wage was made into a slightly lesser lie of “low wage”. Yes, the article is still a load of tosh, but we forced them to put that load of tosh in its proper context. Gone are the days when you’d contact the editor who may or may not include a retraction or clarification days or weeks later. Hell, we don’t even have to contact the editor because they read about it here!

Cam has done something remarkable, whether by accident or design, he has taken an enormous amount of power away from Old Media and undermined their ability to stay out of reach and unaccountable to the consumers of news.
