From the mail bag

Hello Cameron and Team,

Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Please find attached a copy of a “Waikato Times” and Sunday Star Times permanent cancellation letter I sent yesterday. I have emailed a similar cancellation advice to the NZ Herald and the Weekend Herald.

If you have the time to scroll through my rant, you will read I have been a Waikato Times and Herald subscriber for over 30 years.

You can thank Nicky Hager for introducing me to reading Whale Oil. I had never read a blog from either end of the political spectrum before your stolen emails were made public.

I am waiting for the two newspapers mentioned above to respond to my issues and request specifics of my concerns …… I shan’t be holding my breath……

I will be interested in knowing your thoughts on the suggestions in the last paragraph of the attached.

I regard you as being on the moral high ground. Keep it legal and dignified.

Art

Thanks Art.

Legal?  Always (if you forgive my activism about Name Suppression – I learned my lesson).

Dignified?   I’m sure I’ll disappoint you there eventually Art.   I have a style.  And sometimes things just need doing.  But thanks for your letter – you are one of many I receive every day of people “waking up” to the media they used to trust no longer serving their needs.

Art’s letter:

 To whom it may concern,

Please permanently cancel our subscription to the Waikato Times and the Sunday Star Times.

This cancellation is in protest for the appalling one-sided coverage your lightweight respective Editors and Reporters have given to the following issues:-

– Inventing grotesquely slanted News Paper Headlines that bear no resemblance to the truth

– Lack of Investigative journalism and accreditation of Nicky Hagers book of stolen emails

– Glossing over Kim Dotcom’s criminal background and subsequent fawning over his seditious political party

– the Demonization of Cameron Slater, whilst supporting left wing bloggers and un-balanced Academics parading as “neutral experts”

– Treaty of Waitangi gravy train and elite Maori largesse.

– The devotion to solving child poverty in communities where obesity seems to be the main problem. (There is never a substantiated budget or full family background of the poverty stricken children’s immediate families circumstances. Having spent many Charity aid months in real poverty stricken Sub-Saharan Africa ……the opportunist sensationalist MSM need some reality-checks lessons in the social impacts of the real commercial world).

Perhaps your Editors and Reporters should travel to Cuba, North Korea or Ethiopia, to see the effect of Socialist centrally planned economies.

I had never read any political blog until recent media hysteria. Thank you for introducing me to Whale Oil. I believe he introduces a refreshing alternative view to the slanted left-wing garbage now oozing out of the Waikato Times and the many left-wing bloggers who are conspicuously not analysed for equally foul vitriol.

I can obtain far more accurate un-opinionated raw news about NZ’s circumstances from respectable News outlets in Australia, USA and the UK. Even El Jazeera does not regurgitate the tainted distorted opinions that the left wing MSM in NZ auto-feeds the unbalanced Waikato Times journo crew.

We want factual accounts in our Newspapers. If we want opinions, we will scroll through the blogs on the internet for extremists views.

We are not interested in the opinions or the reports from political pontificating geeks in the MSM. If they think they have something worthy to contribute, why don’t they set themselves up as a publically accessible blogger and see how commercially successful they are? But pleeease, do not attempt to brainwash us and taint our opinions with obvious left-wing distortions.

For several decades we have been quietly detesting, but politely tolerating half-baked journo’s opinions disguised as “breaking news”. The hyperbole always becomes more breathless and frantic around Election time. We will not subsidise un-balanced wishful thinking wages anymore by subscribing! We, along with many other fellow advertisers, will also terminate all advertising campaigns with the Waikato Times. We will gratefully donate our subscription to Whale Oil so he can continue his balancing crusade.

It is not just the unbalanced opinions of the MSM that irritate the general public, but often the blind-eyed “un-investigated” omissions……

I may reconsider subscribing again if the Waikato Times and the Sunday Star Times were to mature and offer a balanced coverage. I can see why MSM subscription rates are plummeting. Thank god for the internet and an opportunity to obtain raw news without the contrived personal opinions of indoctrinated reporters.

Could I suggest you sack your extremist opinionated reporters. Give us the raw news devoid of Press release verbiage. Devote an un-edited page titled “OPINION” of the most popular blogger highlights (as determined by Uncle Google and the blogger themselves). This obvious OPINION page would feature popular bloggers from both ends of the political spectrum. There would be no confusion as what is news; what is opinion; what is spin. You could also have an un-edited page titled “POLITICAL SPIN”. Whereupon, Political parties could release policies without editing taint. I am sure successful bloggers and Political Parties would also bring their own advertising and media spend customers with them………

I may even re-subscribe if you differentiated tainted garbage from factual occurrences. If your Editors and Reporters feel affronted their journalistic Licence has been thwarted, I suggest they start up their own creative writing blog and let’s see who pays them for it? In the interests of balance, you could get a representative from both extremes of the blogger-sphere to suggest the leading Headline.

The Editor could even present his supposedly balanced Headline. I personally, would be fascinated to see three possible headlines for the same news story. Let us, the general public decide. Do not give us your opinion, unless it is clearly presented as an opinion on the OPINION page. There will always be an un-balanced Headline in someone’s opinion. But pleeeease, do not disguise it as news.

Kind Regards
(etc)

As much at home writing editorials as being the subject of them, Cam has won awards, including the Canon Media Award for his work on the Len Brown/Bevan Chuang story. When he’s not creating the news, he tends to be in it, with protagonists using the courts, media and social media to deliver financial as well as death threats.

They say that news is something that someone, somewhere, wants kept quiet. Cam Slater doesn’t do quiet and, as a result, he is a polarising, controversial but highly effective journalist who takes no prisoners.

He is fearless in his pursuit of a story.

Love him or loathe him, you can’t ignore him.
