EXCLUSIVE: ISIS terror links in New Zealand

Considerable research from many people has gone into this story. The evidence of Kiwis involved with ISIS in New Zealand is alarming.

Given that worldwide the Islamic State is attracting widespread media attention, I write to bring your attention to a possible story on the rise and potential threat of Islamic extremism in New Zealand. John Key has been talking of sending SAS troops to fight ISIS and we have had what could be described as a veiled threat from one Muslim association and Key has mentioned there are some people in NZ who would want to fight for ISIS. John Hudson did a good job on a Sunday programme in shining a light on part of this story with the investigation into the former Black Power gang member turned Muslim extremist now called Haroon but there is much more to tell and to investigate.

The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand has condemned the violence associated with ISIS but their statement fell short of condemning the ideology of ISIS or their enforced “infidel tax” (Jizya). The statement also seemed to suggest that allied forces fighting terrorism were just as abhorrent as the terrorists. Perhaps it is a stretch but it seems that the Muslim Community in NZ does not totally unreservedly reject the Islamic State and would embrace their goals of worldwide Shari’a law (though perhaps not through violence). What is more concerning is that there seem to be a group within NZ who would advocate for violence and would be willing to support IS.

The global increase in Islamic extremism in the last 12 months

The world is at war for the 3rd time, whether we want to admit it or not, and NZ is not immune. Australia has just confirmed it will send military equipment to help Kurdish forces against the Islamic State. The black flag waving jihadist group has a mission to kill anyone who stands in their way or “makes problem”.

While it may seem that the Islamic State is fighting in Syria and Iraq, far away, they want the whole world to be under Sharia law. Governments around the world are looking to keep their local citizens safe from the same fate as those killed overseas. New anti-terrorism laws are being considered in Britain, the Netherlands, Australia, and France. These laws look to confiscate passports, increase surveillance, and arrest those suspected of bringing the jihad back from overseas.

Such measures may seem an affront to basic rights of privacy and freedoms but the consequences of waiting for something to happen before acting are dire. The murder of people in the Twin Towers (2001), at a Bali nightclub (2002), in Spanish trains (2004), on London public transport (2005), in coordinated attacks across Mumbai (2008), while finishing a marathon in Boston (2013), and many more are all linked to Islamic terrorism. Last month, chemical weapons were found in a house in Brisbane where the plan was to attack Sydney public transport. Two French teenagers were arrested last week after security forces uncovered their plot to bomb a synagogue in a suicide attack. Also last week, USA Federal agents issued a warning bulletin for an imminent terrorist attack at the Mexican border.

The groups claiming responsibility for the attacks above share a common ideology and methodology; to institute Sharia law across the world through violence. Of particular interest, local citizens, not foreigners, carried out many of the attacks, particularly those more recent. Currently, citizens from 81 countries have gone to fight with the Islamic State according to one intelligence organisation. The problem with this is that such people will return to their home countries more radicalised, better trained, and more likely to carry out an attack on home soil.

Islamic extremism in New Zealand and the threat to New Zealanders

New Zealand has been largely free from terrorist attacks. However, we shouldn’t think we are immune from radical Islam and the potential for attack. This year we saw the Islamic State logo proudly worn on the streets of Auckland and the same person was seen proudly wearing it on a TVNZ Sunday program where it was reported the SIS had confiscated his passport and passports of other New Zealanders.

In that same TVNZ report, John Hudson showed footage of the Islamic State supporter, Haroon, praying in a garage in Blockhouse Bay. This is the same garage-based mosque that has been implicated in attacks where weapons were drawn and one man was hospitalised. The leader of the youths praying with Haroon is Sheikh Abu Abdulla Hamam who has been accused of preaching extreme Islam. Despite these events, Haroon and his friends were wearing “Ask me; I’m a Muslim” shirts at an Islam Open Day in Auckland, endorsed by The Federation of Islamic Associations of NZ (FIANZ). It should also be noted that Haroon is a common Arabic name, meaning “warrior lion”. Furthermore, Haroon goes by “Sayfullah Al Muhajahreen”, meaning “sword of god of the emigrants” and associated with ISIS, on Facebook and “Likes” Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril who has been linked to many jihadist militants. Why would FIANZ endorse such people to act as ambassadors to the public?

People from NZ, some of whom have been seen with Haroon, have Facebook profiles that seem to also endorse Islamic State ideology (see attached screenshots from some of the profiles below):

Such Facebook profiles of Australians have been “outed” in the Australian media. However, the NZ mainstream media seem to ignore similar people in NZ.

On 23 Aug, 2014 a group of Kiwis marched up Queen St in protest against the Islamic State slaughter of innocents in Iraq and Syria. It is disturbingly ironic that this march ended on the steps of Aotea Square in Auckland at the same time that the Islamic Open Day was being held there. A group of people holding “Stop the ISIS Genocide” signs were no more than 50m from a group of people who support ISIS (and endorsed by the FIANZ – see above). I believe the NZ public should be made aware of the range of Islamic groups that clearly exist in our society and particularly the extreme Muslims who openly support ISIS.

John Hudson has done a good job in shining a light on part of this story but there is much more to tell and to investigate. Similarly, we need our security agencies and our politicians to be strong in this war because it has reached us. The media need to play its part by reporting the facts. Sadly, NZ is not immune from this new world war and we should acknowledge that before it’s too late.

FIANZ is likely aware of these individuals and their views, given the friction between mosques (reported above). It may be that our politicians are naïve. John Minto, for example can be seen in the photo below shoulder to shoulder with Abdulla Hamam, the son of Sheikh Abdu Abdullah (preacher at the Blockhouse Bay mosque), and Brucey Downs, a Maori convert. Both of these gentlemen are known associates of Haroon and were endorsed by FIANZ as representatives. Brucey has been seen waving a Hamas flag in the streets of Auckland (Hamas has a similar ideology and methodology to ISIS – see their charter.

Germany has banned support for ISIL, including displaying their logo which would have meant arrest for Haroon at the protest and possible arrest for many of the people with FaceBook accounts as above. ISIS is designated as a terrorist organisation in NZ so support for the group is illegal.

We await developments and what it is that John Key will reveal about Kiwi involvement supporting ISIS. As you can see from our own investigation there is a substantial body of evidence that we do indeed have a fomenting terror issue in New Zealand.

As NZ most recognisable Muslim – Where does Sonny Bill Williams sit on all of this?
Love to see a journo ask him on camera

    • Bartman

I’m picking he relies on his faith to give him focus – indeed adherence to any faith will similarly provide an ability to exclude external distractions and focus inwards. Islam is not unique, it’s just a well-publicised faith with a barely hidden agenda of global domination.

  • conwaycaptain

Their converts are the deluded, easily led, poorly educated members of society. I have read reports that these Warriors Of Islam go to the ME and they are useless fighters and some end up as flying mince when they blow themselves up.
I would suggest to JK that we stop all immigration of Muslims and deport any immigrants that step out of line, toute de suite and the tooter the sweeter

    • Jas

It is one thing to be in a pack of thugs and beat individuals or much smaller groups and kick people in the head when they are on the ground then it is to fight against those that can and will fight back and have defensive weapons

      • conwaycaptain

Gurkhas, Paras, Royal Marines??? SAS and SBS???

    • willkiwi

yes, that was my 100% assessment. They are stupid, ignorant and uncivilised people. Humanity, in general, has moved on from where they are, but they have not and they are still stuck in the dark ages.

  • Bombastic

I will probably get a kicking for this, but has anyone noticed that New Zealanders who gravitate towards militant Islam tend to be Maori? Could militant Islam appeal to the warrior gene? If so, that’s a worry.

    • BlitzkriegNZ

Converting to Islam appeals to the weak minded and stupid because they lust for the perceived power it gives them since they’ve had none their whole lives (fits in with racist old Hone’s claim that Maori are kept powerless by the system). The same idiots have to be told how to live and are people who can’t make a judgement without consulting to a stupid book.
Also the fact that they can scab a free feed and some cash for converting.

“Nothing is more dangerous than an idea when it is the only one you have.” – Emile Chartier
This has led to more than one war, and sadly, a war is already well underway.
If we ignore history, we will surely repeat the past in the future.
Wake-up NZ, do not let our collective apathy signal to the ‘apologists’ like Minto etc, that we don’t care or it will normalise these ‘hate-breeders’ and everyday NZ will be gone.
    Time to push-back.

  • JC

It might pay to recall the situation after 911. The main Muslin group in NZ (which name I can’t recall) clearly denounced the attack and promised loyalty to the Govt and finished its public letter with a ringing “God defend NZ!”

Later Helen Clark refused to go to war with Iraq saying she would only do so at the request of the UN. I didn’t agree with her decision but it was a legitimate one to make so fair enough.

But IS is not a sovereign country.. its a terrorist organisation and the UN does not have the same legitimacy in directing other countries what to do about it.. particularly as IS has had some success in radicalising Muslim individuals to murder citizens in the US, Canada and other countries and still other nations have thwarted attempted terror attacks inspired by IS.

There is another difference here since 911, local Muslims stayed loyal here (as best as I know) and did so under a Labour Govt, but now we have a National Govt and the same loyalty does not seem to apply as we’ve seen from the anti-Israel/antisemitic marches plus Muslims recruiting and traveling to the ME to join IS and this has happened long before Key has made any sort of decision about what we might do.

Does this mean there might be a political action and threat from Muslims here because National is perceived as less tolerant to Islamic terrorism?

    • Orange

Sorry I didn’t see that letter. Sounds good though. I did see the Holmes interview where he was very surprised when the Muslims he was speaking to indicated that they thought 9/11 was bad but understandable/justifable.

    • NotGandalf

John Key has Jewish heritage if I remember correctly, this could be an indicator of why IS or Muslim are more likely to step up activities against/in NZ ?

  • Aucky

I am waiting with great anticipation for Russel Norman’s reaction to the PM’s pronouncements. We will then know whether we have a true Kiwi in Parliament or a man bent on undermining our democracy.

    • burns_well_eh

I can answer that one for you already.

  • Nebman

I think the time is fast coming when all people will be required to stand for or against IS. I loathe that this is going to be our reality but these lunatics threaten everyone’s way of life.

They will rampage like the anarchic hordes that they are, destroy and devastate and lay waste to anything and everything that opposes them.

    They must be stopped.

It is only time until one of the local loonies attempts to do what all gang prospects do at some stage and earn his patch.

    • MaryLou

I guess that’s why it’s so hard for people to acknowledge that the danger is already here – once we do so publicly it’s bound to speed things up, and that’s an agonising thought for what it means for our kids. But inevitable it is, so the best path may be to stop it in it’s tracks as quickly as possible

  • Watcher

This is good work by the WO team, and it is not a surprise to most rational Kiwis.

I do not envy the PM or the Govt in their decision making, as Larry Williams said this morning, the Govt is in a no win position.
Regardless of that the Govt has to take action to minimise the threat to our country and as part of the team the threat to the western world.
My only fear is that the actions we will take will not go far enough.

  • Annoyed

This whole thing really annoys me. People are willing to go to any lengths to defend their religious rights but don’t understand/care that everyone else has the same rights to religious freedom. Even those that aren’t religious.

  • BW_Lord

It seems like the NZ media are more focused on who our PM chats to on his own time, than investigating what is rapidly becoming the greatest threat to global stability for many a year.

Good work from the WO team in picking up the slack.

  • This sort of investigative journalism lifts WO above being a mere blog but a legitimate source of news (awareness). The article is balanced and if anything, understated. Keep up the good work WO and look forward to being FREED from the uninformed, hysterical rants so common to the MSM

  • Isherman

Since John Minto is a teacher, perhaps he would like to comment from a professional perspectve what he thinks of the ISIS idea of education, and if he has ISIS hugging mates, has he taken it up with them?

  • Fairnz

Is that a gun in Alexandra Park?

    • Eddie

It seems so! Held by an individual whose passport was taken by the SIS and who supports ISIS. NZ is a tolerant society.

  • crosstherubicon

In the Daily Express today it says that Britain is going to let the ISIS extremists back in no questions asked, and give them as much help as possible via claiming benefits etc.
One really couldn’t make it up but, my old country, Britain really does lead the way in cross cowardice and stupidity when it comes to anything Islam.

    • Nic C

What possible reason or rationale could they give the UK public for such a pathetic and dangerous ‘stance’?? Don’t they enough evidence, based on numerous displays of violence and atrocities committed on their citizens on home soil by such ‘people’, to have the guts to make a firm and meningful ‘stand’ against this lot returning to continue their ‘war’ at home??
I can’t believe the British people are so quiet and apathetic on this issue.
Can you enlighten us at all?

      • crosstherubicon

Whoever does speak up is made out to be racist, xenophobic, bigoted and Islamophobic by the likes of the BBC and their gutless politicians.
This is life in Britain and has been for the last two decades or so thanks to Tony Blair (The most hated man in Britain).
Britain is now the joke of the world and is run by the most cowardly, gutless sycophants to anything Islam one couldn’t make it up.
Due to political correctness we now live in ‘the age of stupid’ and Britain leads the way absolute stupidity.

  • papagaya

I recall Key saying the security risk to New Zealand is low. I would disagree. American, Canadian and British diplomats are all at risk here. Our police are not even armed.

    • Lozda Plot

An armed NZ police force sounds to me like a bigger risk to public safety than IS.

      • Jman

The moderation rules refrain me from expressing the depths of my contempt for the comment above.

  • crosstherubicon

The whole world should look at the example of Britain, France, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands to what really happens when they open the doors to Muslims en mass into their countries. Civil war is brewing in Europe and it’s going to be not unlike the former Yugoslavia of the early 1990’s.

  • lyall

Very misguided attention seekers in my opinion – how are they going to tell the wahine to don burkas, forsake paua and kina and then have to settle for goat bones in the boil up – thats when the revolution will start!

  • crosstherubicon

In London Anjem Choudary has long been given carte blanche to preach his hatred on the streets with his loyal followers and with a police escort to ‘HIS’ and their freedoms of speech. Yet anyone who dares to criticise them is arrested for inciting religious hatred. This has been Britain for decades under successive governments after Margaret Thatcher. New Zealand has the baffling history of whatever happens in Britain we’ll implement it here kind of thing, but we’ll do it better mentality.
I have no doubt that Islam is spreading its ideology around the world ready for the eventual takeover of the west when the numbers are in place.
Political Correctness and left wing progressives, Marxists and the ‘so called’ intelligentsia have been the weapons of choice they have used for decades in Europe. PC has been used to silence their critics and the threats of racism and ruination. Our British and European politicians have become the most gutless, quisling cowards the world has ever seen in the face of the Islamic threat. Obama himself forever perpetrating the myth that ‘Islam is the religion of peace’ is the most sickening thing a right thinking man or woman can see and only serves to make things much, much worse for the future.

Do we want the likes of these murdering evil ISIS thugs in NZ? Our hearts go out to the captured Yezidi girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVISyjFwXAU#t=15
English translation of clip showing ISIS fighters discussing “buying and selling Yezidi slaves”.Published on Nov 1, 2014:
Today is the slave market day
Today is the day where this verse applies: “Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed”
Today is distribution day God willing
    Each one takes his share
I swear man I am searching for a girl I hope I find one
Today is the day of (female) slaves and we should have our share
    Where is my Yezidi girl?
    Where is my Yezidi girl?
Whoever wants to sell his slave, whoever wants to give his slave as a present… Everyone is free to do what he wants with his share.
    Where is my Yezidi girl?
Whoever wants to sell, I can buy my brothers.
Whoever wants to sell his slave, I buy.
Whoever wants to sell his own slave, I buy her.
And if you want to give her as a gift, also I take her.
    Who wants to sell?
    I want to sell.
I pay 3 banknotes (1 banknote is most probably 100 dollars)
I buy her for a pistol.
The price differs if she has blue eyes.
I buy her for a glock (pistol brand)
I pay 5 banknotes. (1 banknote is most probably 100 dollars)
If she is 15 years old
    I have to check her
    check her teeth.
    If she has green eyes
If she doesn’t have teeth, why would I want her?
    Put dentures for her.
    I don’t want.
    On the Yezidis
Can one take 2 slave girls? Does that work?
(Voice behind camera asks) You have a share. What about it?
I got a share of Yezidis but I don’t want one.
Why? Wait why don’t you want yours?
I will give my share away.
AL Farouk and I, we do not want any.
(Voice asks the boy) Do you want a Yezidi slave?
    He nods yes
    Can you handle her?
    Boy giggles
Abu Khalid, do you want a slave?
I don’t want to take one.
Abu Fahd: “Your Yezidi is dead”
    She’s dead
    Someone giggles
    @akhbar – @jenanmoussa

  • God i hope your wrong Cam about this being another world war. As an atheist i don’t say that lightly either. If it is there will be no safe place anywhere. It will be a world wide civil war with armies already in place now!

    • Damage Royal

It will be like a Zombie apocalypse but more violent. I for one welcome these nutters to dare try. I will be watching I will be waiting.

  • axeman

And so I read about another one in the Hawke’s Bay who was stopped from visiting prison as he went about his recruitment & converting inmates to Islam, An ex gang member as well.
Its time to wake up and smell the coffee, we have for so long been a country taking in all comers and we will pay the price for it. IN general we are a Christian founded society and belief’s country. Stop immediately letting in anyone who can not or will not want to assimilate to our culture. Stop anyone coming in or back to the country that are known to have been in Syria or supporting ISIS activities.
Monitor the hell out of anyone in NZ where “chatter” of ISIS and Muslim is concerned. Oh I hear you say that is to much like big brother, well tough luck and any Muslim who is not radicalised will have nothing to fear, and they can carry on just like any one else, enjoying the freedoms and lifestyle that is NZ, which includes following your faith.
Like others and like my post yesterday where are the likes of Norman, Cunliffe, Locke, Hager, and to some extent Shearer on this. This is one time when politics takes a second and back seat to protecting all NZ citizens but unfortunately I bet that doesn’t happen

  • conwaycaptain

Remember the Janisseries of the Ottoman Empire. They were Christian boys who were kidnapped by the Ottomans and converted to Islam and used as the shock troops of the Sultan. Read the Great Siege by Ernle Bradford about the Siege of Malta and their reckless attacks on the Knights of St John.
Malta was nearly lost because the King of Spain did not Intervene and it was there and at Vienna that the Muslim Hordes were stopped.
The Europe of that day did not have the 5th Column in their midst of the Muslim Immigrants and the hordes trying to get to Europe from Africa.

  • Nev

Christians were doing this sort of thing not all that long ago (think of the inquisition), and they eventually stopped. The difference now is with modern communications, IS can get publicity and recruit from all around the world. I just can’t understand why anyone would go there to get shot at.
How do we stop them? Do we have to kill every single one, or can some sense be driven into them? I suspect that if we can remove the people driving this, the rest will come to their senses.

    • johcar

“I suspect that if we can remove the people driving this, the rest will come to their senses”

      I admire your optimism….

      • Nev

Well I can’t see that we can kill every single one of them, so I have hope that there is another way. I don’t understand why the closer Muslim states don’t seem to be putting any effort into stopping the threat, after all they are probably classed as unbelievers by IS as well, and candidates for execution. In fact I think they have killed more Muslims than Christians.

    • LesleyNZ

No no no. Don’t blame the Christians for the Inquisition. The Inquisition was perpetrated by the Catholics against those who did not follow the Catholic religion. Catholics do not profess to be Christians. They are Catholics. Catholicism is very different in belief to Christianity. Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquisition

  • Eddie

Great report on an issue that MSM seem to have bypassed for the easier story of how the ‘moderate’ Muslims will be attacked if we go to fight or the Muslim leadership saying it’s against freedoms to travel. Thank you for opening up the truth that we all felt was there but no one was strong enough to find or give light to. Kia kaha WhaleOil.
