Face of the day

Great to see this ability to take charge of a dangerous situation in one so young. His parents must be very proud of him. He kept a level head and did what needed to be done. Bravo Ben.

A 16-year-old who was “in the right place at the right time” saved a fish and chip shop from fiery ruin.

Shirley Boys’ High School student Ben Fleming was on his way to buy drinks from a dairy on Saturday when he walked past a woman screaming in Greenhaven Fish and Chip Shop.

Ben said a woman in the shop, across the road from Burwood Hospital, was trying to extinguish a stovetop fire with a blanket and a bucket of water, as she screamed for a customer to call the fire brigade.

The woman’s hands were badly burnt, he said.

Ben pulled her outside before tackling the fire with an extinguisher that stopped working when it was half empty.

He borrowed an extinguisher from the Indian takeaway shop next door, and was able to beat the blaze.

He then treated the woman’s burnt hands by pouring water on them.

Ben’s mum Giovanna, 39, said she was at a friend’s Christmas party when she received a call from her son saying he was being treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics.
