Lightning Storm in The Grand Canyon

Photographer Rolf Maeder has combined his love of photography with his weather fascination and has created some of the most spectacular lightning photographs.

Maeder was on Moran Point in Arizona, a promontory overlooking the Grand Canyon, when he and some fellow photographers noticed a lightning storm building on the horizon.

“That was much more than we expected, so we started setting up our tripods and started to take pictures,” said Maeder.

The shots appear to combine multiple lightning bolts in one image. Maeder said he accomplished this by leaving using very long exposure times. For some photos, Maeder held his camera shutter open for as long as 25 seconds.

Maeder, a professional landscape photographer who lives near Sedona, Ariz., said his fascination with weather started at a young age.

“Since childhood, I’ve been a huge fan of clouds: that ever-changing phenomenon which gives wing to my fantasy and depth to my feelings, revealing subtle layers of mood in every landscape,”

Maeder frequently uses the Grand Canyon as the backdrop for his photographs, though he said he also travels to other areas for his art. Wherever he goes, weather is one of the most important elements in his photographs.

“I experience a photographic moment, the moment when all the elements fall into place, as a vast panoramic experience full of information, not only visual but also sensual and emotional information,” said Maeder. “My challenge is to induce these hidden feelings into the final visual experience. Then the photograph comes alive.”
